Chapter 246
My eyelids twitched violently. This was not a good sign. But even if trouble loomed, I had to go. I wouldn't just walk in unprepared, so I texted Steve: [Hey, Iโm heading to see Cole. Keep an eye out, okay?]
No response. He was probably busy training for his upcoming tournament. When he wasn't practicing, he was intensely working out. Sleeping in wasn't an option.
I wasn't worried, though. He'd check his phone after practice, and I had time before facing Cole.
With a deep breath, I drove to Serenity Retreat. Cole's massive Range Rover was already parked outside. He was performing slow exercisesโeither seriously or for show. It was certainly better than smoking or staring at his phone, though I couldn't tell if he was genuinely focused. His prolonged presence, however, indicated heโd been waiting.
I parked and hurried over, apologizing as I approached. "Sorry I'm late."
Cole finished his routine, sighed dramatically, and smiled. "Waiting for a pretty lady never feels long."
He was incorrigible. I forced a smile. "Can we go in now?"
He raised an eyebrow. "You're going in like that?"
I froze. I'd come empty-handedโrude. I fumbled for an excuse. "Uh, it's so early I couldn't find a flower shop open."
Cole chuckled, clearly amused by my weak alibi. He said nothing, simply snapped his fingers. An assistant appeared with a bouquet.
"I took care of it," Cole said smugly as his assistant handed me the flowers.
I felt awkward but accepted them. "You're really thoughtful. Thanks."
"I'm only this thoughtful for a pretty lady," he declared, self-satisfied.
"You're very attentive," I conceded.
Cole raised an eyebrow. "So, you agree."
"Sure," I said, mentally rolling my eyes at his theatrics. "Can we go in now?"
Cole pursed his lips. "I'm not sure how much you know about my dad, but he has his quirks. Especially since his health has been shaky the last couple of years, he's become even moreโฆ particular."
My mouth twitched. One doesn't hear people speak of their fathers like that every day. He was clearly hinting at something. "Just let me know what I need to do. I'll be prepared."
Cole glanced at his watch. "My dad doesn't meet with strangers."
"So, I'm counting on you," I said politely.
Cole cracked his neck, as if bracing himself. "You're sharp, so I'll cut to the chase. You can meet my dad, but you'll need to use a different identity."
I frowned. "Just tell me."
