Listen to this chapter:

โ€œJust tell me,โ€ I asked, โ€œwhy do you want to see my father?โ€

I frowned. Was he changing his mind again? Earlier, when I mentioned needing his help to appraise something, heโ€™d assumed I had a rare item. Now, it seemed he realized there was more to it. Since I was already here, I decided to be upfront.

After listening, Coleโ€™s expression turned serious. โ€œThen you should leave.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€ I felt something was amiss.

โ€œIf youโ€™re planning to meet my dad for this,โ€ Cole said, โ€œyouโ€™re wasting your time. Heโ€™s not going to tell you anything.โ€ He spoke as if privy to his father's every move.

But if there was nothing to hide, why would his father be so evasive? His refusal only strengthened my resolve.

โ€œWhat if I donโ€™t back off?โ€ I challenged. โ€œMaybe your dadโ€™s got nothing to hide after all.โ€

Cole shook his head, looking resigned. โ€œYouโ€™re really stubborn. Fine, Iโ€™ll call him. If heโ€™s cool with it, Iโ€™ll take you to see him.โ€

He pulled out his phone, placing it on speaker. โ€œWhat is it?โ€ Thorstenโ€™s deep voice boomed.

โ€œHey, I was thinking of bringing someone over,โ€ Cole said carefully, โ€œa woman. To see you.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t bring random women around just to bother me,โ€ Thorstenโ€™s voice sharpened.

Cole shot me a playful smirk. โ€œDo you really think Iโ€™d bring someone not worth your time? Sheโ€™s a good person.โ€

Silence. I held my breath, half-hoping for agreement, but then Thorsten said, โ€œNot today. Iโ€™ve got important guests.โ€

โ€œThen weโ€™ll wait inside. We can meet after youโ€™re done,โ€ Cole said, surprising me. For someone usually unconcerned, he was going out of his way.

โ€œDidnโ€™t you hear me?โ€ Thorsten snapped before hanging up.

Cole shrugged, his expression saying, โ€˜Donโ€™t blame me for trying.โ€™

I stared at the gate, blocked by iron bars, wondering who these โ€œimportant guestsโ€ were that Thorsten wouldn't even see his own son.

A hand waved before my face, snapping me out of my thoughts. It was Cole. โ€œYouโ€™re not seriously thinking about climbing over, are you?โ€

I pressed my lips together. โ€œDo you know who your dadโ€™s meeting today?โ€

They were father and sonโ€”the closest bond imaginable. And from what Cole had said, he seemed to know something of his fatherโ€™s dealings.

Cole chuckled. โ€œNo clue. My dadโ€™s life basically revolves around two things: making money and schmoozing with people.โ€

He said it with the annoyingly casual air of someone ridiculously privileged. Still, it was obvious he didnโ€™t want to say more. Just then, his phone rang. He glanced at the screen and back at me. โ€œSteve knows you came to see me?โ€

Wait, how did he know it concerned me when he hadn't even answered?

I gave him a small, knowing smile.

Coleโ€™s expression darkened. Without a word, he declined the call.

My heart jumped. That would definitely make Steve suspicious, and I knew heโ€™d be contacting me any second.
