โJust tell me,โ I asked, โwhy do you want to see my father?โ
I frowned. Was he changing his mind again? Earlier, when I mentioned needing his help to appraise something, heโd assumed I had a rare item. Now, it seemed he realized there was more to it. Since I was already here, I decided to be upfront.
After listening, Coleโs expression turned serious. โThen you should leave.โ
โWhy?โ I felt something was amiss.
โIf youโre planning to meet my dad for this,โ Cole said, โyouโre wasting your time. Heโs not going to tell you anything.โ He spoke as if privy to his father's every move.
But if there was nothing to hide, why would his father be so evasive? His refusal only strengthened my resolve.
โWhat if I donโt back off?โ I challenged. โMaybe your dadโs got nothing to hide after all.โ
Cole shook his head, looking resigned. โYouโre really stubborn. Fine, Iโll call him. If heโs cool with it, Iโll take you to see him.โ
He pulled out his phone, placing it on speaker. โWhat is it?โ Thorstenโs deep voice boomed.
โHey, I was thinking of bringing someone over,โ Cole said carefully, โa woman. To see you.โ
โDonโt bring random women around just to bother me,โ Thorstenโs voice sharpened.
Cole shot me a playful smirk. โDo you really think Iโd bring someone not worth your time? Sheโs a good person.โ
Silence. I held my breath, half-hoping for agreement, but then Thorsten said, โNot today. Iโve got important guests.โ
โThen weโll wait inside. We can meet after youโre done,โ Cole said, surprising me. For someone usually unconcerned, he was going out of his way.
โDidnโt you hear me?โ Thorsten snapped before hanging up.
Cole shrugged, his expression saying, โDonโt blame me for trying.โ
I stared at the gate, blocked by iron bars, wondering who these โimportant guestsโ were that Thorsten wouldn't even see his own son.
A hand waved before my face, snapping me out of my thoughts. It was Cole. โYouโre not seriously thinking about climbing over, are you?โ
I pressed my lips together. โDo you know who your dadโs meeting today?โ
They were father and sonโthe closest bond imaginable. And from what Cole had said, he seemed to know something of his fatherโs dealings.
Cole chuckled. โNo clue. My dadโs life basically revolves around two things: making money and schmoozing with people.โ
He said it with the annoyingly casual air of someone ridiculously privileged. Still, it was obvious he didnโt want to say more. Just then, his phone rang. He glanced at the screen and back at me. โSteve knows you came to see me?โ
Wait, how did he know it concerned me when he hadn't even answered?
I gave him a small, knowing smile.
Coleโs expression darkened. Without a word, he declined the call.
My heart jumped. That would definitely make Steve suspicious, and I knew heโd be contacting me any second.
