Chapter 272
Hayden's "please" sounded polite enough, but his request felt like a command. I knew this wasn't about work. Yesterday, he'd questioned me about Brad's flowers; now he'd witnessed the entire scene. Was another interrogation coming? Having a boyfriend, I realized, was trouble-magnet. Without him, I could have easily dismissed Brad. No drama. But now? I had to deal with Hayden. Ugh, no guy is ever truly chill.
With everyone watching, I couldn't refuse. Reluctantly, I followed him to his office. It was near mine, minimalist yet overflowing with gadgets. Beyond the standard desk and computer, electronic equipment dominated the space. I didn't recognize most of it, but the setup screamed "seven-figure salary."
I was still assessing the equipment when the door clicked shut. I'd noticed his doorplate earlier: Chief Engineer. Definitely a seven-figure title.
Hayden looked at me. "Have you had breakfast?" His intense gaze made my heart race. After last night, facing him directly felt even more unnerving.
I wandered toward the gadgets, feigning interest. "Yeah, I ate," I replied.
"Didn't I tell you to take the day off? Why are you here?" His question stopped my charade.
I turned to him. "Mr. Hart, you're overstepping."
His jaw tightened. I pressed my lips together. "We might be together, but that doesn't mean you control my life, especially my job. Even if you're trying to protect me."
His lips parted. "I get it. I won't do it again."
His response was surprisingly sincere. I didn't want to push it, so I glanced around. "Your setup is impressive."
He remained silent. It was work hours; I shouldn't overstay. I smiled. "Well, I'll leave you to it. I'm heading back to my office."

"Kiki," Hayden called.
"Mr. Hart," I replied, "we should keep things professional at work, and... I'd prefer no one knew about us."
He frowned, so I quickly added, "It's not because I'm ashamed or interested in anyone else. I just don't want gossip or it affecting our work."
"Okay," he agreed readily.
"Alright then, I'll let you get back to work," I said, turning to leave.
But Hayden blocked my path. "What did you call me earlier?"
Huh? I blinked, realizing he meant my teasing comment during Brad's removal.
"Oh, that? It was a joke," I said awkwardly.
"So, you really think I'm old?" Hayden asked, catching me off guard.
Wait, what? No! My "old man" comment had been playful, but he seemed genuinely bothered. The tough guy wasn't big on jokes.
I shook my head and laughed. "No, you're definitely not old. Not even close."
"Tell the truth," he said, his voice serious, almost challenging.
