Chapter 274
I didn't go to lunch because Lena had already made plans with me. She mentioned her college senior was visiting their hospital as a guest lecturer. She'd arranged a meeting to discuss Yuna's treatment plan.
"Then I'll bring Hayden along," I said. Since Yuna was his sister, his presence seemed essential. After all, the final decision regarding surgery would be his.
Lena hesitated. "Is there a problem? Is it inconvenient?" I asked, sensing something was amiss.
"It's better if you come alone," Lena explained. "He only has a short break, and we'll need to keep it brief."
I went to the hospital alone, carrying Yuna's medical records. Lena was waiting. After a quick review of the documents, she led me to the lecture hall. She explained, "He's incredibly busy. After his lecture, he has a packed schedule, so you'll probably only get four or five minutes with him."
I raised an eyebrow. "That busy? Is he the President or something?"
Lena laughed. "Basically! He's an internationally renowned professor now. He's only here because the hospital administration likely prayed for a miracle, or a director pulled some strings."
I noticed a flicker of sadness in Lena's eyes. She was remarkable, but compared to the senior she admired, her accomplishments probably felt insignificant. Perhaps that's why she'd harbored this unrequited crush for so long. Love involves compatibility, but also a sense of equality.
"Have you met him privately?" I asked.
"No, he's always busy," Lena said, nudging me. "And if I had met him, I wouldn't be dragging you along. He's a big-shot professor, always with an assistant, and his calendar is packed."
I understood. It wasn't that she didn't want to see him; she simply never had the opportunity.
"You have his contact information, right? Why not reach out?" I suggested.
Lena didn't reply, simply glancing away. We reached the lecture hall, where a large screen announced: [Welcome, Professor Nate Neumann].
We entered; the hall was packed. On stage, a handsome young man in rimless glasses spoke confidently.
Chapter 224
That had to be Nate Neumann.
His lecture was clear, concise, and his voice smoothโperfect for television or radio. His white coat, illuminated by the spotlights, gave him an almost ethereal quality. Doctors truly possess an aura, saving lives and all. No wonder Lena had cherished him all this time.
The lecture hall was overflowing, with people even in the aisles. Arriving late, Lena and I stood at the back. I wondered if I was imagining things, but it seemed Nate glanced at us upon our arrival.
"He's looking at you," I whispered, nudging Lena.
"He's looking at the audience. Don't overthink it," she dismissed.
Nate's lecture concluded an hour later. My back ached from standing, but Lena seemed unaffected. She was a doctor, accustomed to long hours of surgery. An hour was nothing to her. However, I struggled. I wasn't used to standing for so long, and after last night'sโฆ activities with Hayden, I was sore and my legs felt weak.
I stretched and glanced at Nate, surrounded by people near the stage. "He's quite the speaker," I commented, adding, "And very good at it."
