Chapter 296

Why was Wayne calling so late? I frowned as Hayden added, โ€œHeโ€™s sent you a few messages, too.โ€ I still felt groggy as he handed me the phone. Everything was a blur, and I was too drained to think straight. Hayden gave me a reassuring look. โ€œYou donโ€™t have to answer if you donโ€™t want to,โ€ he said.

I hesitated, my thumb hovering over the screen, unsure whether to answer. Before I could decide, the call went to voicemail. I opened the messagesโ€”unread ones from earlier that morning:

[Rea, can we meet up?] [Rea, thereโ€™s something Iโ€™m not sure if I should tell you.] [Rea, please reply when you see this.]

Heโ€™d sent two more in the afternoon:

[Rea, Iโ€™m waiting for your reply.] [Rea, are you really busy?]

Seeing them all, I could feel Wayneโ€™s anxiety. Heโ€™d been waiting all day. Whatever he was debating telling me, it had to be significant. Wayneโ€™s always been like an older brother, protecting me. So, if he was this worried, what could it be?

After hesitating, I called him back. He answered almost instantly. โ€œRea, where are you?โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s going on?โ€ I asked, cutting to the chase.

There was a pause. Just as I was about to press him, he asked, โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong with you?โ€ He must have heard the exhaustion in my voice, but I was more concerned about what he had to say. โ€œIโ€™m fine. Seriously. What do you need to talk about?โ€

โ€œCan we meet up now?โ€ he asked.

I was lying in a hospital bed, so meeting wasn't an option. I was about to suggest he tell me over the phone when the door swung open. Lena stormed in, her face a scowl. โ€œYou wake up and the first thing you do is make a call? What urgent business could you possibly have? Do you not care about your health?โ€

I quickly covered the phone, but it was too late. Wayneโ€™s anxious voice came through. โ€œRea, are you sick? Are you in the hospital?โ€

Oh, no way was she getting out of this. I tightened my grip, practically pouting. โ€œNope, I need to know now.โ€

Lena rolled her eyes and poked my forehead. โ€œFine, fine. He asked me if I still liked him.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ My jaw dropped. โ€œHe actually said that? Straight up?โ€

She nodded, giving me a small half-smile. I squeezed her arm. โ€œAnd? What did you say? Please tell me you didnโ€™t chicken out and deny it!โ€

โ€œDo I look like a coward?โ€ She raised an eyebrow.

I blinked. โ€œWait, soโ€ฆ are you guys together now?โ€

She snorted. โ€œOh my God, you make it sound like weโ€™re having some scandalous affair.โ€

โ€œStop stalling and just tell me what happened!โ€ I said, practically bouncing with impatience.

Lena bit her lip. โ€œWell, what do you think he said?โ€

Ugh, she was making me guess. I thought about how Nate looked at her the other day and joked, โ€œLena, Iโ€™ve had feelings for you for a long time.โ€

She snorted. โ€œHe only said a few words.โ€

โ€œFew words?โ€ I blurted. โ€œLike, โ€˜I like youโ€™? Or even better, โ€˜I love youโ€™? No way. Was he that direct?โ€

Lena flicked my forehead. โ€œNope. He just said, โ€˜I know.โ€™โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ I stared at her, completely thrown. โ€œAnd then?โ€

โ€œThere was no โ€˜thenโ€™,โ€ she said with a bitter smile. โ€œPretty much the nicest way to get rejected, right?โ€

I was speechless. Lena gave me a small, sad smile. โ€œNot every story has a happy ending, so donโ€™t overthink it.โ€

She stood up, but I grabbed her hand. โ€œSo you guys just had dinner and thatโ€™s it?โ€

โ€œWe didnโ€™t even get that far. Retta called him away before we finished,โ€ she said, tapping my nose. โ€œSeriously, stop worrying about me and get some rest.โ€

She left, and I lay there, still processing everything. A soft knock broke the silence. I figured it was Hayden, but when the door opened, my breath caught in my throat at who actually stepped inside.
