Chapter 296
Why was Wayne calling so late? I frowned as Hayden added, โHeโs sent you a few messages, too.โ I still felt groggy as he handed me the phone. Everything was a blur, and I was too drained to think straight. Hayden gave me a reassuring look. โYou donโt have to answer if you donโt want to,โ he said.
I hesitated, my thumb hovering over the screen, unsure whether to answer. Before I could decide, the call went to voicemail. I opened the messagesโunread ones from earlier that morning:
[Rea, can we meet up?] [Rea, thereโs something Iโm not sure if I should tell you.] [Rea, please reply when you see this.]
Heโd sent two more in the afternoon:
[Rea, Iโm waiting for your reply.] [Rea, are you really busy?]
Seeing them all, I could feel Wayneโs anxiety. Heโd been waiting all day. Whatever he was debating telling me, it had to be significant. Wayneโs always been like an older brother, protecting me. So, if he was this worried, what could it be?
After hesitating, I called him back. He answered almost instantly. โRea, where are you?โ
โWhatโs going on?โ I asked, cutting to the chase.
There was a pause. Just as I was about to press him, he asked, โWhatโs wrong with you?โ He must have heard the exhaustion in my voice, but I was more concerned about what he had to say. โIโm fine. Seriously. What do you need to talk about?โ
โCan we meet up now?โ he asked.
I was lying in a hospital bed, so meeting wasn't an option. I was about to suggest he tell me over the phone when the door swung open. Lena stormed in, her face a scowl. โYou wake up and the first thing you do is make a call? What urgent business could you possibly have? Do you not care about your health?โ
I quickly covered the phone, but it was too late. Wayneโs anxious voice came through. โRea, are you sick? Are you in the hospital?โ
Chapter 297
Oh, no way was she getting out of this. I tightened my grip, practically pouting. โNope, I need to know now.โ
Lena rolled her eyes and poked my forehead. โFine, fine. He asked me if I still liked him.โ
โWhat?โ My jaw dropped. โHe actually said that? Straight up?โ
She nodded, giving me a small half-smile. I squeezed her arm. โAnd? What did you say? Please tell me you didnโt chicken out and deny it!โ
โDo I look like a coward?โ She raised an eyebrow.
I blinked. โWait, soโฆ are you guys together now?โ
She snorted. โOh my God, you make it sound like weโre having some scandalous affair.โ
โStop stalling and just tell me what happened!โ I said, practically bouncing with impatience.
Lena bit her lip. โWell, what do you think he said?โ
Ugh, she was making me guess. I thought about how Nate looked at her the other day and joked, โLena, Iโve had feelings for you for a long time.โ
She snorted. โHe only said a few words.โ
โFew words?โ I blurted. โLike, โI like youโ? Or even better, โI love youโ? No way. Was he that direct?โ
Lena flicked my forehead. โNope. He just said, โI know.โโ
โWhat?โ I stared at her, completely thrown. โAnd then?โ
โThere was no โthenโ,โ she said with a bitter smile. โPretty much the nicest way to get rejected, right?โ
I was speechless. Lena gave me a small, sad smile. โNot every story has a happy ending, so donโt overthink it.โ
She stood up, but I grabbed her hand. โSo you guys just had dinner and thatโs it?โ
โWe didnโt even get that far. Retta called him away before we finished,โ she said, tapping my nose. โSeriously, stop worrying about me and get some rest.โ
She left, and I lay there, still processing everything. A soft knock broke the silence. I figured it was Hayden, but when the door opened, my breath caught in my throat at who actually stepped inside.
