Chapter 303

โ€œI get it,โ€ Hayden said.

I was so exasperated I laughed. โ€œNow I understand why youโ€™re still single in your thirtiesโ€”youโ€™re way too boring!โ€

โ€œYou think Iโ€™m boring?โ€ he asked softly.

I thought about his less-than-smooth flirting attempts and smiled. โ€œI mean, youโ€™re not exactly Mr. Smooth-Talker.โ€

Hayden was quiet for a few seconds. โ€œI always figured sweet-talking was just fancy lying.โ€

I blinked, surprised. That wasโ€ฆdifferent.

โ€œDo you want me to sweet-talk you?โ€ he asked.

I mean, who doesnโ€™t like flattery? But it should be genuine, not a fake act like Jaceโ€™s.

โ€œNah, just be yourself,โ€ I said, snuggling closer. โ€œYouโ€™re kinda perfect just the way you are.โ€

โ€œIf I proposed, would you say yes?โ€ Hayden unexpectedly brought up marriage.

I hadnโ€™t considered it, and blurted out, โ€œYou havenโ€™t even asked.โ€

He took my hand, pulled it from under the covers, and played with my fingers. โ€œKiki, will you marry me?โ€

I snorted. โ€œSeriously? This is your proposal?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not exactly a proposal, but yeah, kinda,โ€ Hayden replied, making me want to smack him.

I never pictured my first proposal like this. Iโ€™d always imagined Jace, down on one knee, not Hayden casually popping the question in bed. Thinking about proposals reminded me of Jaceโ€™s planned amusement park proposalโ€”a grand gesture Iโ€™d missed. Pictures later surfaced online.

โ€œHayden, do you really think you can win me over with just a few words? A real proposal needs at least flowers and a ringโ€ฆโ€ Before I finished, he lifted my hand.

I saw a ring sparkling on my finger. My jaw dropped. There was no way heโ€™d just put it on.

โ€œI slipped it on last night. I asked if you wanted to wear it, and you nodded,โ€ he said, looking pleased.

โ€œThatโ€™s not fair! I was asleep! How can that even count?โ€ I smacked him lightly.

โ€œI know, thatโ€™s why Iโ€™m asking now,โ€ Hayden said, tracing the ring. โ€œWill you marry me?โ€

If I said yes immediately, Iโ€™d seem too easy. So, I glanced at the ring with mock disdain. โ€œHayden, if youโ€™re serious, at least put in some effort. Did you just grab some old family heirloom?โ€

He was quiet, then said softly, โ€œIt is. It was my momโ€™s. She said it was for her future daughter-in-law.โ€

I froze, feeling like an idiot. โ€œIโ€™m sorry, I was just joking. I didnโ€™t meanโ€”โ€

โ€œItโ€™s okay,โ€ he interrupted, smiling gently. โ€œThis oneโ€™s from my mom to you. Iโ€™ve got another one from me.โ€

I breathed a sigh of relief. โ€œThen Iโ€™ll wait for your ring before I give you an answer.โ€

He chuckled. โ€œSo thatโ€™s a yes?โ€

I pouted, wanting to say no, but didn't want him to misinterpret. โ€œYou donโ€™t even have the ring yet. How could that be a yes?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re so stubborn,โ€ Hayden muttered before kissing me.

The kiss deepened, until his phone rang. He pulled back, breathless and blushing. โ€œYou should probably get that.โ€

He brushed my cheek, silenced his phone, and tossed it aside.
