Chapter 314

Haydenโ€™s eyes narrowed, and I instinctively gripped him tighter. โ€œIs it true?โ€

โ€œWhy would you think that?โ€ he countered.

I was about to mention Lindey when Yunaโ€™s voice called from a distance, โ€œKeira, your phoneโ€™s been ringing nonstop!โ€ She was hurrying over, despite her heart conditionโ€”she wasnโ€™t supposed to be running.

โ€œOkay, I got it!โ€ I quickly jumped off Haydenโ€™s lap and rushed to her.

It was Lindey callingโ€”multiple times. Something was up.

โ€œLindey?โ€ I answered immediately.

โ€œRea, why havenโ€™t you been picking up? I thought something happened!โ€ Her voice was laced with panic.

โ€œNo, I just didnโ€™t have my phone on me.โ€

She let out a relieved breath. โ€œYou scared me. I was imagining the worst.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll keep it with me next time,โ€ I promised. โ€œWhatโ€™s going on?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m furious!โ€ Lindeyโ€™s voice was sharp and angry.

I couldnโ€™t help but smile. โ€œWho got you mad this time? Matthew?โ€

โ€œIf it were him, Iโ€™d knock some sense into him! No, itโ€™s Jace.โ€

I sighed. Lena was rightโ€”no matter how over things were between Jace and me, as long as I remained connected to the Johnston family, his name would keep resurfacing in my life.

โ€œWhat did he do now?โ€ I asked.

โ€œHeโ€™s cut us off because of Tanya Twain! Now, heโ€™s justโ€ฆ gone,โ€ Lindey fumed, her voice shaking with frustration.

But I already knew from Wayne that Matthew had cut ties with Jace. Knowing why things had escalated, I didnโ€™t push for details. โ€œLindey, heโ€™s probably just mad. Give him time.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not like that,โ€ she snapped. โ€œHeโ€™s told Wayne everything. Heโ€™s not coming back. Heโ€™s done with the Johnston family.โ€

My brow furrowed. โ€œWhat did he say?โ€

โ€œHe told Wayne to take care of us because he canโ€™t anymore. He even handed over the company to him. And get thisโ€”he wants Wayne to look after you too. Can you believe that?โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s acting like this is goodbye forever, like heโ€™s walking out on all of us,โ€ she spat, clearly hurt.

I wasnโ€™t sure how to respond. This was their family business, and I didnโ€™t want to be drawn into the drama. But something Hayden had said earlier made me suspect there was more to the story. โ€œLindey, maybe thereโ€™s something else going on,โ€ I suggested carefully.

She didnโ€™t seem to pick up on my hint. โ€œWhat could be going on? He just wants to marry that widow whoโ€™s carrying someone elseโ€™s baby!โ€

That left me speechless.

โ€œJace thinks he can manipulate us with this stunt, but I wonโ€™t fall for it. If he wants to leave, fine. As far as Iโ€™m concerned, I donโ€™t have a son anymore,โ€ Lindey declared, her voice hard.

But I knew she didnโ€™t mean it. If she truly didnโ€™t care, she wouldnโ€™t have called me.

โ€œJust try to calm down,โ€ I said gently. โ€œYou know how he isโ€”heโ€™s been like this since he was a kid. Maybe once he cools off, heโ€™ll come around.โ€

I could feel frustration building. This conversation was draining.

โ€œHeโ€™s going to be the death of me,โ€ Lindey vented.

I stayed silent, realizing how much other peopleโ€™s negativity could weigh on you. Venting might make them feel better, but it leaves you feeling drained.

After a beat, Lindey shifted the conversation. โ€œRea, where are you? I havenโ€™t seen you in ages.โ€

I glanced at the river, its surface sparkling under the fading light. Hayden and his siblingsโ€™ soft laughter floated in the air. A small smile tugged at my lips. โ€œIโ€™m with Hayden, visiting his hometown.โ€

There was a pause before Lindey spoke again. โ€œHe proposed, didnโ€™t he?โ€

I was about to reply when she added, โ€œI saw your post on social media.โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ I said, unable to hide my smile. โ€œI said yes.โ€
