Chapter 314
Haydenโs eyes narrowed, and I instinctively gripped him tighter. โIs it true?โ
โWhy would you think that?โ he countered.
I was about to mention Lindey when Yunaโs voice called from a distance, โKeira, your phoneโs been ringing nonstop!โ She was hurrying over, despite her heart conditionโshe wasnโt supposed to be running.
โOkay, I got it!โ I quickly jumped off Haydenโs lap and rushed to her.
It was Lindey callingโmultiple times. Something was up.
โLindey?โ I answered immediately.
โRea, why havenโt you been picking up? I thought something happened!โ Her voice was laced with panic.
โNo, I just didnโt have my phone on me.โ
She let out a relieved breath. โYou scared me. I was imagining the worst.โ
โIโll keep it with me next time,โ I promised. โWhatโs going on?โ
โIโm furious!โ Lindeyโs voice was sharp and angry.
I couldnโt help but smile. โWho got you mad this time? Matthew?โ
โIf it were him, Iโd knock some sense into him! No, itโs Jace.โ
I sighed. Lena was rightโno matter how over things were between Jace and me, as long as I remained connected to the Johnston family, his name would keep resurfacing in my life.
โWhat did he do now?โ I asked.
โHeโs cut us off because of Tanya Twain! Now, heโs justโฆ gone,โ Lindey fumed, her voice shaking with frustration.
But I already knew from Wayne that Matthew had cut ties with Jace. Knowing why things had escalated, I didnโt push for details. โLindey, heโs probably just mad. Give him time.โ
โItโs not like that,โ she snapped. โHeโs told Wayne everything. Heโs not coming back. Heโs done with the Johnston family.โ
My brow furrowed. โWhat did he say?โ
โHe told Wayne to take care of us because he canโt anymore. He even handed over the company to him. And get thisโhe wants Wayne to look after you too. Can you believe that?โ
โHeโs acting like this is goodbye forever, like heโs walking out on all of us,โ she spat, clearly hurt.
I wasnโt sure how to respond. This was their family business, and I didnโt want to be drawn into the drama. But something Hayden had said earlier made me suspect there was more to the story. โLindey, maybe thereโs something else going on,โ I suggested carefully.
She didnโt seem to pick up on my hint. โWhat could be going on? He just wants to marry that widow whoโs carrying someone elseโs baby!โ
That left me speechless.
โJace thinks he can manipulate us with this stunt, but I wonโt fall for it. If he wants to leave, fine. As far as Iโm concerned, I donโt have a son anymore,โ Lindey declared, her voice hard.
But I knew she didnโt mean it. If she truly didnโt care, she wouldnโt have called me.
โJust try to calm down,โ I said gently. โYou know how he isโheโs been like this since he was a kid. Maybe once he cools off, heโll come around.โ
I could feel frustration building. This conversation was draining.
โHeโs going to be the death of me,โ Lindey vented.
I stayed silent, realizing how much other peopleโs negativity could weigh on you. Venting might make them feel better, but it leaves you feeling drained.
After a beat, Lindey shifted the conversation. โRea, where are you? I havenโt seen you in ages.โ
I glanced at the river, its surface sparkling under the fading light. Hayden and his siblingsโ soft laughter floated in the air. A small smile tugged at my lips. โIโm with Hayden, visiting his hometown.โ
There was a pause before Lindey spoke again. โHe proposed, didnโt he?โ
I was about to reply when she added, โI saw your post on social media.โ
โYeah,โ I said, unable to hide my smile. โI said yes.โ
