Chapter 32

โ€œHayden, this is the girl I mentioned who wants to switch rooms. Can you two discuss it?โ€ Macyโ€™s voice cut through the staring contest between Hayden and me.

I stepped forward. โ€œHi, Iโ€™m Keira Kay. Would you mind switching rooms with me?โ€

โ€œHayden Hart, and no.โ€ He dismissed me as quickly as heโ€™d washed his hair earlier.

My lips twitched in irritation; my stubborn side kicked in. โ€œWhy not?โ€

Hayden glanced at me but didnโ€™t answer. He simply slung an army-green towel over his shoulder and walked past, sending a chill through me.

Macy came over. โ€œHey, Keira. Donโ€™t be upset. Hayden isnโ€™t good at sweet-talking girls. Iโ€™ll talk to him later.โ€

My temper flared, and I raised my voice. โ€œNo need. Itโ€™s just a room. Whoever wants it can have it.โ€

Macy pulled me aside. โ€œDonโ€™t be so harsh. Heโ€™s an ex-soldier. If you push him too far, he might carry you out and toss you outside.โ€

I couldnโ€™t help but laugh. How could I mistake an ex-soldier for a freshly released inmate?

โ€œIโ€™m serious, Keira. Iโ€™m not making this up. The widow across the street, Molly Ruth, kept banging on his door until he finally wrapped her in a sheet and threw her out. Everyone saw it.โ€

โ€œHuh? Another widow? Weird how I keep running into them.โ€

โ€œSeriously? Did she make it into his bed?โ€ I asked, curious.

โ€œShe tried, but she didnโ€™t get that far. He tossed her out before she could. It was quite the show,โ€ Macy said, clicking her tongue.

I smirked. โ€œDonโ€™t worry, Iโ€™m not into guys who attract widows.โ€

Just as I said that, Hayden reappeared, now wearing a black T-shirt and a black leather jacket. He looked tough.

โ€œHayden, heading out this late?โ€ Macy asked.

โ€œYeah,โ€ he replied curtly.

โ€œDonโ€™t stay out too late. I have to lock up, and it wouldnโ€™t be good if a thief got inโ€ฆโ€ Her words trailed off as Hayden disappeared.

As I turned to head back to my room, Macy added, โ€œHaydenโ€™s a good guy, really upright. Any girl who ends up with him is lucky.โ€

Lucky or unlucky, it had nothing to do with me. My heart wasnโ€™t shattered, but it felt pretty beat up from past heartbreak.

โ€œKeira,โ€ Macy called as I was about to enter my room.

I turned around. โ€œYes?โ€

โ€œHayden never locks his door when he goes out. Want me to show you around his room? If you like it, I can talk to him again tomorrow.โ€ She seemed determined to help.

I smiled. โ€œThat wouldnโ€™t be right.โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s nothing wrong with it. Weโ€™re not taking anything, and he doesnโ€™t bring any girls here. Itโ€™s fine,โ€ she insisted, already making her way to Haydenโ€™s room.

โ€œNo, thank you,โ€ I declined. โ€œI donโ€™t want to switch anymore. I like my room as it is.โ€

She stopped, and I gave her a warm, grateful smile. โ€œThanks. You should get some rest too.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t sleep,โ€ she muttered as I closed my door.

Actually, I couldnโ€™t sleep either. Even though today had been more eventful than the past decade, I should have been exhausted and eager for rest.
