Chapter 378

โ€œYuna can have the surgeryโ€”within the next couple of days!โ€ Lenaโ€™s voice exploded from the speakerphone.

Hayden immediately turned to me, and I nodded, my heart pounding with the good news.

โ€œThey found a donor heart?โ€ Hayden asked.

A pause followed before Lenaโ€™s teasing voice chimed in, โ€œWhat are you still doing at Keiraโ€™s this late, huh?โ€

I rolled my eyes. Seriously? Now was not the time for jokes. โ€œFocus, Lena. Update. Now.โ€

Lena chuckled, but quickly returned to the matter at hand. โ€œItโ€™s not a new donor. The family of the previous donor changed their mind again.โ€

โ€œWhat did Professor Neumann say?โ€ Hayden asked.

โ€œHe said Yunaโ€™s tests all came back perfect. So, as long as nothing unexpected arisesโ€”like a cold or infectionโ€”she can have the surgery in three days,โ€ Lena replied, sounding hopeful. She must have already spoken with Nate.

Hayden and I exchanged excited glances, both buzzing with nervous energy. I squeezed his hand as he asked, โ€œIs there anything else we need to do?โ€

โ€œNot reallyโ€ฆ except, oh wait, yesโ€”make sure youโ€™ve got the surgery fee ready.โ€

I glanced at Hayden and quickly interjected, โ€œDonโ€™t worry, weโ€™ve got it covered. The hospital wonโ€™t have any complaints.โ€

โ€œOkay then, Iโ€™ll leave you two lovebirds to it,โ€ Lena said, sounding as if she were about to hang up. Then she added, โ€œOh, and Hayden, Keiraโ€™s on her period, so no funny business.โ€

We were taken aback.

While thrilled about Yunaโ€™s surgery, we were also nervousโ€”after all, any surgery carries risks. That night, neither of us slept well.

Before dawn, I heard Hayden moving around. Sounds from the kitchen confirmed he was already up, probably making breakfast. If I had to guess, it included something for Yuna, too.

I sat up in bed, staring out the window before grabbing my phone. Scrolling through social media, I noticed Cedricโ€”the police officer whose friend request Iโ€™d accepted yesterdayโ€”hadnโ€™t yet messaged me. So, why add me? Just to inflate his friend count? Ugh, how pointless.

I glanced at his profile picture before moving on to my feed. Thatโ€™s when I saw an update from Steveโ€”he was at some fancy pool training facility. I liked the post and commented: [I want tickets.]

Somehow, Hayden must have sensed I was awake. He entered the room, holding a glass of water. He handed it to me. โ€œI made pearl barley soup. Letโ€™s bring it to the hospital for Yunaโ€™s breakfast. Sound good?โ€

I smiled. โ€œI knew you were going to do that. Of course, itโ€™s fine.โ€

Hayden reached out, gently smoothing a few strands of my messy hair. โ€œYou and I are getting more and more in sync.โ€

โ€œI really believe Yunaโ€™s going to be okay. Nate wouldnโ€™t approve the surgery if he wasnโ€™t confident,โ€ I said, trying to reassure us both.

Hayden nodded, brushing his hand across my cheek. โ€œFinish your water and get ready. Iโ€™ll go pack breakfast.โ€

As I sipped the water, I looked out the window and noticed something I hadnโ€™t seen last nightโ€”a few scattered cigarette butts on the ground below. They were Jaceโ€™s. He had been here. He found this placeโ€ฆ but didnโ€™t come to see me. Probably because he saw me with Hayden.

Hayden and I headed to the hospital early; it was quite quiet upon our arrival. Not many people were around yet. But as soon as we pulled up, I spotted someone familiar. Wade stood by the hospital entrance, staring up at the sky. He wasnโ€™t moving, just standing there as if frozen in place. For some reason, I felt a pang of sadness seeing him like that.

โ€œStop for a second,โ€ I said to Hayden.

He slowed the car, and I pointed toward Wade. โ€œLook at him.โ€
