Chapter 384

Sasha sounded sincere. I could tell she was lonely; otherwise, why would she vacillate between hostility and friendship?

โ€œI donโ€™t have many friends,โ€ Sasha said, stepping closer. โ€œThorsten doesnโ€™t let me make any. But I can tell he treats you differently. So, if I become friends with you, he might be okay with it.โ€

I remained silent.

โ€œI really donโ€™t have any ulterior motives. I just want to be friends. And Milly really likes you; she talks about you all the time,โ€ she added, playing the โ€œmy kid likes youโ€ card.

โ€œI know you probably donโ€™t think much of me,โ€ she continued, her voice softening. โ€œBut canโ€™t we at least try? For Millyโ€™s sake?โ€

Gone was her earlier cockiness. Now, she seemed almost vulnerable, pleading.

I gave her a polite but firm smile. โ€œIโ€™m busy. I donโ€™t have time for new friends.โ€

I didnโ€™t want to be cold, but getting involved with Thorstenโ€™s associates? That was a mess I wanted no part of. No good could come of it. More importantly, I had zero interest in his world of drama.

Sashaโ€™s hopeful expression faded. She let out a bitter laugh, lowering her head. โ€œI get it. Iโ€™m not the kind of person youโ€™d want to be friends with.โ€

Her attempt at eliciting guilt was transparent. But Sasha didnโ€™t know me. If anything, her manipulation only decreased my sympathy.

Without another word, I turned and walked away, feeling her gaze on my back.

Later that evening, my phone rang. It was Lindey. โ€œRea, did you know Jace is back?โ€

I thought of the figure Iโ€™d seen in the car last night and replied, โ€œYeah, I know.โ€

โ€œHas he come to see you?โ€ Lindey asked.

โ€œNo,โ€ I said. โ€œWhy? Is something wrong?โ€

Lindey huffed. โ€œI havenโ€™t seen him at all. How could something not be wrong if I canโ€™t even get a glimpse of him?โ€

I knew why she was calling. She was angry that Jace was back and hadnโ€™t visited her.

โ€œHeโ€™s probably handling other things first. Iโ€™m sure heโ€™ll come by later,โ€ I said, falling into my old habit of making excuses for him.

โ€œHandling what? That widow, obviously,โ€ Lindey muttered, her irritation evident.

I stayed quiet.

โ€œHeโ€™s been completely bewitched by her. Heโ€™s forgotten all about his parents,โ€ Lindey snapped.

I remained silent.

โ€œSometimes I wonder how I ended up with a son like him. If Iโ€™d known heโ€™d turn out this way, I shouldโ€™veโ€”โ€ She trailed off, her anger simmering.

โ€œLindey,โ€ I said gently, โ€œdonโ€™t get yourself worked up. Itโ€™s not good for your health, and Matthewโ€™s already not doing well. You need to stay strong for him.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re the only one who really cares about me. If only you were my real daughter,โ€ Lindey sighed.

โ€œI am your daughter,โ€ I replied softly, trying to comfort her.

She sighed again. We both knew my words were just thatโ€”words. Polite, but untrue. If I were truly their daughter, Iโ€™d be at Matthewโ€™s side constantly, instead of managing my own life.

โ€œRea, donโ€™t bother going after Jace. Donโ€™t try to talk sense into him either. Letโ€™s see how stubborn he really is,โ€ Lindey said.

โ€œOkay,โ€ I agreed.

After a final sigh, Lindey reminded me to visit Matthew when I could, then hung up.

Later, I asked Lena, โ€œHas Tanya come by lately?โ€

โ€œNope. And even if she does, sheโ€™s not coming to me,โ€ Lena replied, giving me a curious look. โ€œWhy? Bored without her drama?โ€

โ€œYou think I have time for that?โ€ I rolled my eyes before telling her about Jaceโ€™s return and his failure to visit Matthew.

โ€œStay out of it,โ€ Lena said flatly. โ€œYou donโ€™t need to waste your energy on their family drama.โ€

I knew she was right. But some people are impossible to avoid. Despite my best efforts, I ran into Jace again the day of Yunaโ€™s transplant. He stood in the crowd, watching from a distance as Hayden and I held Yunaโ€™s hand. Our eyes met briefly, a fleeting glance. As Yuna was wheeled into the operating room, I felt Haydenโ€™s hand grow cold in mine.
