Chapter 384
Sasha sounded sincere. I could tell she was lonely; otherwise, why would she vacillate between hostility and friendship?
โI donโt have many friends,โ Sasha said, stepping closer. โThorsten doesnโt let me make any. But I can tell he treats you differently. So, if I become friends with you, he might be okay with it.โ
I remained silent.
โI really donโt have any ulterior motives. I just want to be friends. And Milly really likes you; she talks about you all the time,โ she added, playing the โmy kid likes youโ card.
โI know you probably donโt think much of me,โ she continued, her voice softening. โBut canโt we at least try? For Millyโs sake?โ
Gone was her earlier cockiness. Now, she seemed almost vulnerable, pleading.
I gave her a polite but firm smile. โIโm busy. I donโt have time for new friends.โ
I didnโt want to be cold, but getting involved with Thorstenโs associates? That was a mess I wanted no part of. No good could come of it. More importantly, I had zero interest in his world of drama.
Sashaโs hopeful expression faded. She let out a bitter laugh, lowering her head. โI get it. Iโm not the kind of person youโd want to be friends with.โ
Her attempt at eliciting guilt was transparent. But Sasha didnโt know me. If anything, her manipulation only decreased my sympathy.
Without another word, I turned and walked away, feeling her gaze on my back.
Later that evening, my phone rang. It was Lindey. โRea, did you know Jace is back?โ
I thought of the figure Iโd seen in the car last night and replied, โYeah, I know.โ
โHas he come to see you?โ Lindey asked.
โNo,โ I said. โWhy? Is something wrong?โ
Lindey huffed. โI havenโt seen him at all. How could something not be wrong if I canโt even get a glimpse of him?โ
I knew why she was calling. She was angry that Jace was back and hadnโt visited her.
โHeโs probably handling other things first. Iโm sure heโll come by later,โ I said, falling into my old habit of making excuses for him.
โHandling what? That widow, obviously,โ Lindey muttered, her irritation evident.
I stayed quiet.
โHeโs been completely bewitched by her. Heโs forgotten all about his parents,โ Lindey snapped.
I remained silent.
โSometimes I wonder how I ended up with a son like him. If Iโd known heโd turn out this way, I shouldโveโโ She trailed off, her anger simmering.
โLindey,โ I said gently, โdonโt get yourself worked up. Itโs not good for your health, and Matthewโs already not doing well. You need to stay strong for him.โ
โYouโre the only one who really cares about me. If only you were my real daughter,โ Lindey sighed.
โI am your daughter,โ I replied softly, trying to comfort her.
She sighed again. We both knew my words were just thatโwords. Polite, but untrue. If I were truly their daughter, Iโd be at Matthewโs side constantly, instead of managing my own life.
โRea, donโt bother going after Jace. Donโt try to talk sense into him either. Letโs see how stubborn he really is,โ Lindey said.
โOkay,โ I agreed.
After a final sigh, Lindey reminded me to visit Matthew when I could, then hung up.
Later, I asked Lena, โHas Tanya come by lately?โ
โNope. And even if she does, sheโs not coming to me,โ Lena replied, giving me a curious look. โWhy? Bored without her drama?โ
โYou think I have time for that?โ I rolled my eyes before telling her about Jaceโs return and his failure to visit Matthew.
โStay out of it,โ Lena said flatly. โYou donโt need to waste your energy on their family drama.โ
I knew she was right. But some people are impossible to avoid. Despite my best efforts, I ran into Jace again the day of Yunaโs transplant. He stood in the crowd, watching from a distance as Hayden and I held Yunaโs hand. Our eyes met briefly, a fleeting glance. As Yuna was wheeled into the operating room, I felt Haydenโs hand grow cold in mine.
