Chapter 400

โ€œBaked pears. He specifically ordered them in the middle of the night,โ€ Gavin explained, placing the still-warm bag on the seat. โ€œHe said your throat sounded hoarse, so he got these to help.โ€

The warmth seeped into my palms as I stared at the bag and the tea. It was such a thoughtful gestureโ€”one that left me more confused than comforted.

Gavin started the car. โ€œMs. Kay, should I take you to Emberholm?โ€ he asked, referring to Willow Residences.

Hearing that, I realized how Jace had found me outside my apartment that night. Clearly, Gavin had shared my address.

โ€œNo,โ€ I said flatly.

Gavin paused, his eyes meeting mine in the rearview mirror. โ€œThenโ€ฆ where should I take you?โ€

โ€œPull over,โ€ I said quietly.

Gavin jolted slightly but obediently pulled to the curb. He glanced back, clearly confused. โ€œMsโ€ฆโ€

I interrupted. โ€œIโ€™m not going home. Iโ€™ll go to the surgical recovery unit.โ€

For a moment, Iโ€™d been so preoccupied that I almost forgotโ€”Yuna was still recovering in the hospital.

Gavinโ€™s expression shifted, as if he understood. He knew about Yunaโ€™s surgery, which meant Jace probably did too.

โ€œYou havenโ€™t rested at all. Are you sure youโ€™re okay?โ€ Gavin asked, though I wasnโ€™t sure if he was genuinely concerned or just worried about repercussions.

โ€œIโ€™m fine,โ€ I said, reaching for the door handle.

โ€œMs. Kay,โ€ Gavin called, his gaze dropping to the bag of pears. โ€œMr. Johnston really does still care about you. If it werenโ€™t for my mistakeโ€ฆ maybe you two would already be married.โ€

He was still blaming himself.

I didnโ€™t want to discuss it. With a faint smile, I replied, โ€œHe cares about other people, too.โ€ Gavin seemed to want to say more, but I didnโ€™t give him the chance. I stepped out of the car. โ€œBe sure to eat the pears while theyโ€™re warm,โ€ he called after me.

I waved and walked briskly toward the hospital.

As the elevator ascended, I glanced at the pears. The soft, golden fruit glistened in the clear glass bowl; a few mint leaves were perfectly arranged on top. They looked as flawless as the first time Jace had bought them for me. Iโ€™d loved them so much then that Iโ€™d even posted a picture on social media.

But now, holding the same pears, a tightness formed in my throat, making it hard to swallow.

When I reached Yunaโ€™s room, I expected her to be asleep. But she was sitting up in bed, readingโ€”not a romance novel this time, but study materials.

โ€œKeira, what are you doing here? Werenโ€™t you and Hayden supposed to be at the competition?โ€ Yuna asked, looking behind me as if expecting him.

โ€œWe didnโ€™t go. Something came up, so I came back early,โ€ I said, placing the pears on the table and sitting beside her.

Yunaโ€™s face filled with concern. โ€œYou didnโ€™t have a fight with Hayden, did you?โ€

I laughed softly. โ€œNo, we didnโ€™t fight. If we had, trust me, I wouldnโ€™t be here.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not fair,โ€ Yuna teased, grinning. โ€œEven if you two broke up, youโ€™d still have to take care of me.โ€

She quickly realized her words and smacked her lips. โ€œBut you wonโ€™t break up! No way! Youโ€™ll always be my sister-in-law.โ€

I grabbed her hand. โ€œReally, Yuna, weโ€™re fine. Hayden and I are better than ever. I came back because a family member is seriously ill.โ€

Yuna still looked skeptical, so I added, โ€œHe just had emergency surgery. Heโ€™s in the ICU now.โ€

โ€œOh, thank God,โ€ Yuna breathed, relieved.

โ€œHow about you? How are you feeling today?โ€ I asked, watching her face.

โ€œGreat!โ€ Yuna said enthusiastically, gesturing toward her books. โ€œThatโ€™s proof.โ€

I picked up the book and flipped through it, raising an eyebrow. โ€œThinking about going to college?โ€
