Chapter 400
โBaked pears. He specifically ordered them in the middle of the night,โ Gavin explained, placing the still-warm bag on the seat. โHe said your throat sounded hoarse, so he got these to help.โ
The warmth seeped into my palms as I stared at the bag and the tea. It was such a thoughtful gestureโone that left me more confused than comforted.
Gavin started the car. โMs. Kay, should I take you to Emberholm?โ he asked, referring to Willow Residences.
Hearing that, I realized how Jace had found me outside my apartment that night. Clearly, Gavin had shared my address.
โNo,โ I said flatly.
Gavin paused, his eyes meeting mine in the rearview mirror. โThenโฆ where should I take you?โ
โPull over,โ I said quietly.
Gavin jolted slightly but obediently pulled to the curb. He glanced back, clearly confused. โMsโฆโ
I interrupted. โIโm not going home. Iโll go to the surgical recovery unit.โ
For a moment, Iโd been so preoccupied that I almost forgotโYuna was still recovering in the hospital.
Gavinโs expression shifted, as if he understood. He knew about Yunaโs surgery, which meant Jace probably did too.
โYou havenโt rested at all. Are you sure youโre okay?โ Gavin asked, though I wasnโt sure if he was genuinely concerned or just worried about repercussions.
โIโm fine,โ I said, reaching for the door handle.
โMs. Kay,โ Gavin called, his gaze dropping to the bag of pears. โMr. Johnston really does still care about you. If it werenโt for my mistakeโฆ maybe you two would already be married.โ
He was still blaming himself.
I didnโt want to discuss it. With a faint smile, I replied, โHe cares about other people, too.โ Gavin seemed to want to say more, but I didnโt give him the chance. I stepped out of the car. โBe sure to eat the pears while theyโre warm,โ he called after me.
I waved and walked briskly toward the hospital.
As the elevator ascended, I glanced at the pears. The soft, golden fruit glistened in the clear glass bowl; a few mint leaves were perfectly arranged on top. They looked as flawless as the first time Jace had bought them for me. Iโd loved them so much then that Iโd even posted a picture on social media.
But now, holding the same pears, a tightness formed in my throat, making it hard to swallow.
When I reached Yunaโs room, I expected her to be asleep. But she was sitting up in bed, readingโnot a romance novel this time, but study materials.
โKeira, what are you doing here? Werenโt you and Hayden supposed to be at the competition?โ Yuna asked, looking behind me as if expecting him.
โWe didnโt go. Something came up, so I came back early,โ I said, placing the pears on the table and sitting beside her.
Yunaโs face filled with concern. โYou didnโt have a fight with Hayden, did you?โ
I laughed softly. โNo, we didnโt fight. If we had, trust me, I wouldnโt be here.โ
โThatโs not fair,โ Yuna teased, grinning. โEven if you two broke up, youโd still have to take care of me.โ
She quickly realized her words and smacked her lips. โBut you wonโt break up! No way! Youโll always be my sister-in-law.โ
I grabbed her hand. โReally, Yuna, weโre fine. Hayden and I are better than ever. I came back because a family member is seriously ill.โ
Yuna still looked skeptical, so I added, โHe just had emergency surgery. Heโs in the ICU now.โ
โOh, thank God,โ Yuna breathed, relieved.
โHow about you? How are you feeling today?โ I asked, watching her face.
โGreat!โ Yuna said enthusiastically, gesturing toward her books. โThatโs proof.โ
I picked up the book and flipped through it, raising an eyebrow. โThinking about going to college?โ
