Chapter 402

It was Jace. The second he appeared, my first thought was that something had happened to Matthew. I jumped up. โ€œWhat happened to your dad?โ€

Jaceโ€™s gaze didnโ€™t shift; his eyes were locked on me. โ€œHeโ€™s fine.โ€ He held out his phone. โ€œMy mom wants to talk to you.โ€

The anxiety that had been building in my chest slowly eased. โ€œWhat does she need?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s urgent. She told me to find you and have you call her back right away,โ€ Jace said, pushing the phone closer.

Just as I reached for the phone, Yunaโ€™s voice rang out behind me. โ€œKeira, who is he?โ€

My breath hitched. Yuna had already been suspicious that something was off between Hayden and me. And with all the romance novels she devoured, if she found out Jace was my ex, sheโ€™d definitely start jumping to conclusions.

โ€œHeโ€™sโ€ฆ my brother,โ€ I said, the word tumbling out awkwardly. The second it left my mouth, I swear the room temperature dropped. I refused to meet Jaceโ€™s eyes. Instead, I forced a smile and turned to Yuna. โ€œIโ€™m just gonna step out and make a quick call. Keep enjoying your pears!โ€

Yuna, still holding her spoon, didnโ€™t move, her eyes locked on Jace with clear suspicion.

โ€œLetโ€™s go,โ€ I said to Jace, desperate to get out of there before Yuna asked more questions.

โ€œWaitโ€ฆ is he the other brother? Like, another son of your foster parents?โ€ Yunaโ€™s tone made my stomach flip.

I glanced at Jace, and his face was definitely darker. Great. Was he pissed? Hurt? Both? But, like, we had broken up, and his parents were all about making me their goddaughter. So technicallyโ€ฆ calling him โ€œbrotherโ€ wasnโ€™t totally wrongโ€ฆ right?

โ€œYup,โ€ I said quickly, grabbing Jaceโ€™s phone and heading for the door. I dialed Lindeyโ€™s number, and she picked up right away, her voice all concerned-mom vibes. โ€œRea, why didnโ€™t you have Jace bring you home?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m with Haydenโ€™s sister,โ€ I mumbled.

There was silence on the other end. Yeah, the Johnstons had accepted Hayden, but deep down, they were still rooting for Team Jace.

โ€œWhat did you need?โ€ I asked, already pretty sure this was about Matthewโ€™s phone. The fact that she hadnโ€™t mentioned anything to Jace but came straight to me? Yeah, she definitely wanted to keep this quiet.

โ€œIs Jace with you?โ€ Lindeyโ€™s voice confirmed it.

I glanced back. Jace had followed me out, of course. I walked a little farther. โ€œHe canโ€™t hear.โ€

I checked Matthewโ€™s phone. โ€œIt was her number,โ€ Lindey said, frustration leaking through her words.

โ€œHer?โ€ That wasnโ€™t exactly helpful.

โ€œWho?โ€

โ€œTanya Twain,โ€ Lindey practically spat. โ€œIโ€™ve called her before to warn her off. I recognize her number.โ€

Oh. So thatโ€™s why she didnโ€™t want Jace to know. But what did Tanya want with Matthew?

โ€œShe mustโ€™ve said something that upset him. He started bleeding again. Like breaking you and Jace up wasnโ€™t enoughโ€”now sheโ€™s trying to mess with Matthew. Is she trying to destroy this whole family?โ€ Lindeyโ€™s voice rose, her anger building.

I glanced at Jace again, then lowered my voice. โ€œPlease, donโ€™t get too worked up.โ€

Chapter 403

Lindey was on a roll now. โ€œSheโ€™s only this bold because that idiot Jace keeps protecting her. Sheโ€™s wading in deeper, thinking sheโ€™ll get away with it. But I swear, Iโ€™ll make sure she regrets it.โ€

โ€œLindey, letโ€™s just figure out what she said to Matthew first,โ€ I tried, hoping to calm her down.

โ€œWhat else could it be? She wants us to accept her, to let her into this family,โ€ Lindey snapped, like Tanya had already made her plans crystal clear.

โ€œSheโ€™s delusional. Even if every woman on Earth disappeared and Jace stayed single forever, Iโ€™d never let her into this family,โ€ Lindey snapped, her words sharp enough to cut through steel.

I knew she was just venting, too angry to hold back. So, I didnโ€™t try to reason with her. I let her get it all out.

After a few more harsh words, she finally started to calm down. โ€œRea, just wait and see how I deal with that woman.โ€

Her words dragged up a memory from my early years with the Johnstons. Back then, Lindey and Matthew had nearly divorced. Iโ€™d overheard Lindey on the phone once, vowing to โ€œteach someone a lessonโ€ and make it clear her husband wasnโ€™t up for grabs. What followed was a massive fight between her and Matthew. He couldnโ€™t believe how far she was willing to go, and sheโ€™d broken down, saying he pushed her there. She promised that anyone who tried to break up her family would pay, no matter what it cost her.

I didnโ€™t know all the details, but one thing was clear. Lindey wasnโ€™t afraid to be ruthless when it came to protecting her family. Hearing that anger again today, I worried she might go too far.

Now that I knew what was happening, I couldnโ€™t just let it slide. If I didnโ€™t try to stop her and something happened, I wouldnโ€™t be able to face Matthew.

โ€œIโ€™ll talk to Tanya,โ€ I said, hoping to keep things from getting worse. โ€œIโ€™ll figure out what sheโ€™s up to, and then we can decide what to do.โ€

Lindey went quiet for a few seconds before agreeing. โ€œFine. But make sure you tell herโ€”if anything happens to Matthew, Iโ€™ll make her pay with her life.โ€

Her words sent a chill down my spine.

โ€œIโ€™ll update you after I talk to her. Please, try to stay calm,โ€ I said before hanging up.

I stood there for a second, my mind racing, before turning back to return Jaceโ€™s phone.

โ€œMy momโ€ฆ was she talking about Tanya?โ€ Jace asked.

He wasnโ€™t clueless. Lindey hadnโ€™t told him because she knew heโ€™d defend Tanya. But I felt like he needed to know the truth. โ€œYeah,โ€ I admitted after a pause. โ€œBefore Matthew started coughing up blood, he got a callโ€”from Tanya.โ€ Jaceโ€™s eyes narrowed, and I could tell the realization hit him hard.

Chapter 403

โ€œLindey didnโ€™t tell you because she knew youโ€™d try to protect Tanya. But sheโ€™s already shown up at your home while youโ€™ve been gone. You know Matthewโ€™s condition, and you know whatโ€™s at stake. Think carefully about how youโ€™re going to handle this,โ€ I said, keeping my voice steady.

On the outside, I sounded calm. On the inside? I was really calm. Here I was, having a rational conversation with the guy I once lovedโ€ฆ about the woman who tore us apart. If that didnโ€™t prove I was over him, I didnโ€™t know what would.

Jace stayed quiet, and I figured there was no point in dragging it out. I turned to head back to Yunaโ€™s room.

โ€œYou donโ€™t even appreciate my concern anymore?โ€ Jaceโ€™s low voice stopped me right before I opened the door.

I knew he was talking about the baked pears heโ€™d brought after noticing my hoarse voice. The ones I gave to Yuna instead.

โ€œWould you eat something past its expiration date?โ€ I shot back, pushing the door open and stepping inside.

I paused at the entrance, taking a deep breath to steady myself. Thatโ€™s when I caught Yunaโ€™s voice, soft but clear.

โ€œHayden, is Keiraโ€™s โ€˜brotherโ€™ actually her ex?โ€
