Chapter 404

Waitโ€”she was on the phone with Hayden? His phone was finally on? That was my first thought, but I stayed put, listening as Yuna continued.

โ€œHayden, Keiraโ€™s ex was looking at her kinda weird. Iโ€™m pretty sure he still has feelings for her. Did you two have a fight or something? Keira seemsโ€ฆoff. Why havenโ€™t you been answering? Your phoneโ€™s been off, and youโ€™re not replying to messages. Whatโ€™s going on?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m telling you, if you mess this up and lose Keira, Iโ€™m not gonna forgive you. Hayden, come on, answer your messages, pick up your phoneโ€ฆโ€

I couldnโ€™t help but smile. It was obvious nowโ€”Yuna wasnโ€™t on the phone with Hayden; she was leaving him voice messages. Still, where was he? Why wasnโ€™t he answering or calling back?

Not wanting Yuna to feel awkward if she realized Iโ€™d overheard her, I made sure to open the door a little louder this time as I stepped back inside.

โ€œKeira!โ€ Yuna called out when she heard me.

I walked over, noticing how she quickly tucked her phone away, flashing me an innocent, playful grin.

โ€œDonโ€™t overthink things,โ€ I said, sitting on the edge of her bed. โ€œYeah, the guy you saw is my ex, but thatโ€™s ancient history. Weโ€™re just friends nowโ€”or, more like siblings.โ€

Yunaโ€™s eyes sparkled with curiosity. โ€œCould you tell me your story with him?โ€

I blinked. She scooted closer, practically radiating excitement. โ€œJust wanna knowโ€”how did you guys start dating? And what happened that made you break up?โ€

Her curiosity was so sweet, like she was trying to peek into a world she didnโ€™t fully understand yet. I could tell sheโ€™d filled her head with romantic tales from all those novels she devoured, but she hadnโ€™t experienced the real thing. She was probably trying to figure out where the line between fantasy and reality blurred when it came to love.

Funny how that worksโ€”when people donโ€™t know something, they just have to find out. And honestly, if I didnโ€™t spill the truth, sheโ€™d probably come up with all sorts of wild theories on her own. Better to just set the record straight.

Besides, there wasnโ€™t anything unspeakable about my past with Jace. It would just mean digging up old wounds.

โ€œAlright, Iโ€™ll give you the full scoop.โ€ I kicked off my shoes and sat cross-legged on the bed, facing Yuna, ready to tell her everything about Jace and me.

Ever since we broke up, I hadnโ€™t really let myself dwell on the past. But now, walking through the memories out loud, I realized how much there actually wasโ€”so many moments, both good and bad.

And yeah, at certain points, it still hurt. I guess thatโ€™s what they mean when they talk about the scars left by a broken heart.

โ€œKeira,โ€ Yuna said softly, her eyes wide with wonder. โ€œForget about Hayden for a secondโ€”your relationship with Jace was so intense. Itโ€™s like something straight out of a novel.โ€

I almost laughed. If only she knew the messy parts Iโ€™d left outโ€”the kind of stuff thatโ€™s too deep for her to handle.

Yuna gripped my hand like she was holding on for dear life. โ€œNow Iโ€™m kind of scared.โ€

I smiled. โ€œScared Iโ€™ll run back to him?โ€

Yuna nodded.

I chuckled. โ€œRelax. Iโ€™m not into reruns. Iโ€™m way too selfish for thatโ€”if someone else gets their hands on whatโ€™s mine, Iโ€™d rather throw it out than take it back.โ€

โ€œSame,โ€ Yuna said, echoing my sentiment.

โ€œWait, youโ€™re not worried Iโ€™ll spill all this to Hayden and make him jealous, are you?โ€ she asked cautiously.

I laughed. โ€œNot even a little. If he gets jealous, it just proves heโ€™s into me.โ€

โ€œBut heโ€™s never been in a relationship before,โ€ Yuna pouted, like that was some tragic flaw Hayden couldnโ€™t recover from.

โ€œAww, you feeling bad for him?โ€ I teased. โ€œMaybe we canโ€”โ€

โ€œNo way!โ€ Yuna cut me off, shaking her head so fast I thought she might give herself whiplash. โ€œI just think itโ€™s kinda sad. Heโ€™s not your first. I guess I like the idea of that perfect love story where both people are each otherโ€™s first, you know?โ€

Of course. Sheโ€™s that girlโ€”totally in love with romance novel clichรฉs.

โ€œThose stories exist, sure, but theyโ€™re rare,โ€ I said, trying to keep it real.

Yuna squeezed my hand, her expression suddenly serious again. โ€œKeira, ifโ€”just ifโ€”one day you found out Jace had some secret reason for what he did, like he didnโ€™t really betray youโ€ฆwould you forgive him?โ€
