Chapter 423

I was so mad at him. Heโ€™d gotten so drunk, he didnโ€™t even remember asking me to pick him up. Back then, Jace had stared at me, all dazed, and after a beat, he leaned in and kissed meโ€”soft and sweet. Then, like always, he ruffled my hair. โ€œSilly girl,โ€ heโ€™d said.

That morning sky? It was just like now, barely light. He was still buzzed, full of that restless energy he always had when he drank too much: โ€œWanna hit the hilltop for the sunrise?โ€ he asked, eyes sparkling. Classic Jace. Whenever he drank too much, he hated going to bed, always saying the room spun the second he tried to lie down. So, Iโ€™d usually drive him around until he calmed down.

That night, I drove us to the hilltop. We sat on this big rock, leaning into each other, watching the stars disappear as the sky shifted from dark to gray. Then, the sun started peeking out, flooding everything with that soft, pink light. He ended up falling asleep on my shoulder, staying there until the sun was high enough that I woke him up. Only then did we leave.

I stared at the sky now. โ€œYou havenโ€™t done that in a while.โ€

โ€œYeah? I guess I forgot,โ€ he mumbled, lowering his head.

If only he hadnโ€™t forgotten everythingโ€”his promises, our memoriesโ€”then maybe he wouldnโ€™t have fallen for Tanyaโ€™s games.

โ€œSo, what do you wanna talk about?โ€ I brought it back to why we were here.

โ€œYou found out about Tanya,โ€ Jace said, voice flat. โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you tell me sooner?โ€

That didnโ€™t shock me at all. I paused, pressing my lips together. โ€œWhat would it have changed? Youโ€™d just fight with her like tonight, andโ€ฆ then what?โ€

Desmond was dead. Nothing could fix that. And Jace and I? We were way beyond fixing.

Jace stayed quiet for a while, then finally asked, โ€œWhen you found out, did you think I was an idiot? A total fool?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ I sighed. โ€œBut sheโ€™s worse than I ever thought.โ€

He let out a bitter laugh. โ€œYeah, I deserve that.โ€

I couldnโ€™t stop myself from asking, โ€œSo what are you gonna do about her?โ€

Tanyaโ€™s goal was obvious. The way she acted at the opening ceremony and how she fought with Jace tonightโ€”it was all about climbing her way into wealth and power.

Jace glanced around like he was looking for something, but then he just plopped down on the grass.

โ€œThereโ€™s dew,โ€ I pointed out.

He gave a small smile. โ€œIโ€™m not that picky.โ€ He patted the spot next to him. โ€œWanna sit?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s cold.โ€

He nodded, not pushing it. โ€œYeah, it is.โ€

โ€œShe said if I donโ€™t agree to her terms, sheโ€™s gonna release a video of Desmond catching usโ€ฆ making out,โ€ he said, tugging at the grass under him.

Ah, so thatโ€™s why Tanya had acted so bold yesterdayโ€”she had backup.

โ€œAnd you? Are you giving in?โ€ I asked.

He twirled a piece of grass between his fingers, brushing it against his nose. โ€œMy dad had another health scare yesterday. Itโ€™s getting worse.โ€

I got it. He didnโ€™t want to stir the pot and stress Matthew out even more.

Thinking about Tanyaโ€™s demands yesterday, I asked, โ€œSo, are you asking me to give her the amusement park?โ€

โ€œShe doesnโ€™t deserve it,โ€ Jace said, his eyes locked on mine. โ€œThat park is yours.โ€

I wasnโ€™t disappointed. Even if I didnโ€™t care about the park anymore, the thought of Tanya getting her hands on it? Nope. No way. She definitely didnโ€™t deserve it. But if she was bold enough to demand it, not giving it to her might stir up even more drama.

โ€œWill she actually agree to that?โ€ I asked, not convinced.

Jace hesitated for a second. โ€œShe agreed, butโ€ฆ there are other conditions.โ€
