Chapter 436

I wasnโ€™t sure what was happening in Lenaโ€™s room, but judging from earlier? Yeah, it was probably getting just as heated as things were with Hayden and me. Getting interrupted during that moment, especially their first time, would definitely leave a mark.

I pressed down on Hayden, who was beyond ready. โ€œHold up a sec.โ€ His chest rose and fell, and his eyes were smoldering. โ€œHmm?โ€

I nodded toward the door with a pout. โ€œYou hear that? Someoneโ€™s trying to ruin the vibe next door.โ€

His gaze stayed locked on me. โ€œSo?โ€

โ€œCome on, a heroโ€™s gotta step in when thereโ€™s injustice,โ€ I said, already wriggling out from under him.

โ€œAnd what about the injustice happening right here?โ€ he asked, making me grin.

I cupped his face and gave him a quick kiss. โ€œJust hang tight, babe. Iโ€™ll go handle the villain.โ€

I knew I sounded ridiculous, but honestly? Thatโ€™s how I felt with himโ€”like a carefree kid. Itโ€™s wild how true that old saying is: when youโ€™re with someone who really loves you, you just start to feel lighter, younger, like youโ€™re rewinding time in the best way.

Thatโ€™s exactly how I am now. With Jace, I always had to act all grown-up and distant, trying to fit into that โ€˜future CEO wifeโ€™ mold. I spent so much time keeping up appearances, making sure I didnโ€™t mess with Jaceโ€™s image, that I felt old before my time.

Lena used to point out that Hayden didnโ€™t have Jaceโ€™s wealth or status, but honestly? Thatโ€™s what makes being with him feel so freeing. Sometimes you have to lose something to gain something better, right?

Like a ninja, I slid off Hayden and quickly straightened my clothes, rushing to the door. But just as I opened it, Nateโ€™s door across the hall swung open, too. And it wasnโ€™t Nate who stepped outโ€”it was Lena.

I paused in the doorway, deciding to stay out of it for now. If things went well, Iโ€™d just enjoy the show. If not, Iโ€™d jump in.

โ€œWhereโ€™s Nate?โ€ Retta asked Lena bluntly.

โ€œHeโ€™s in the shower,โ€ Lena replied, super chill. It was a simple answer, but the way she said it had a different vibe now.

Retta didnโ€™t even blink. She just gave a little smile. โ€œYeah, he does love his nightly showers.โ€

Oof. That was definitely a subtle dig, like she knew Nateโ€™s habits better than Lena. Total pot-stirrer, this one.

Lena didnโ€™t even flinch, though. โ€œSo, you didnโ€™t come here for Nate, huh? Looks like you came for me.โ€ Years of dealing with difficult patients mustโ€™ve sharpened Lenaโ€™s witโ€”she could read people like a book. Retta, wearing some fancy silk nightgown, tried to play innocent, but thenโ€ฆ I almost gasped.

When we left dinner, Lena was in this elegant evening dress. But now? She was standing there in a white menโ€™s dress shirt. Nateโ€™s shirt.

Well, damn. Looks like they moved way faster than Hayden and I, who hadnโ€™t even gotten through a third of the foreplay yet. Guess being with someone in their thirties speeds things up, huh?

While I was thinking this over, Rettaโ€™s voice turned icy. โ€œWhy would I need to see you?โ€

Yep, classic Rettaโ€”trying to make Lena feel small, like she didnโ€™t even matter. It was a tricky line to come back from, but Lena? She didnโ€™t take the bait, though. She just smiled coolly. โ€œSo you came here for Nateโ€™s shower, then?โ€

I paused, fighting the urge to laugh. Thatโ€™s Lenaโ€”sharp as a tack.

For the first time, Rettaโ€™s confident mask slipped, but she quickly fired back, โ€œLena, Iโ€™m someone who understands decency and propriety.โ€

The shade was clearโ€”she was basically calling Lena out for spending the night with Nate.
