Chapter 452

โ€œWhy are you asking me for permission to do something you want?โ€ Hayden countered.

I leaned my head against his neck, avoiding his gaze as my fingers toyed with the buttons on his shirt. โ€œBecause I donโ€™t want you to overthink it. I donโ€™t want you to be upset.โ€

He pressed a gentle kiss to my forehead, the warmth of it spreading over me. โ€œSo, youโ€™re worried about how Iโ€™ll feel?โ€

There was a soft happiness in his voice, like my concern for him meant more than I realized. It reminded me that men need to feel cared for, too.

โ€œOf course. Youโ€™re my boyfriend. I donโ€™t want you thinking Iโ€™d ever leave you behind for someone else, especially not a guy I used to be with. I wouldnโ€™t want you feeling weird about me staying connected to an ex,โ€ I said honestly.

I knew too well what it felt like to deal with betrayal and suspicion, and I never wanted Hayden to go through that because of me.

โ€œYou care so much about me,โ€ Hayden teased, though his voice was filled with affection. His words brought back the memory of Jaceโ€™s comment at the airport, that I never cared about him. But that wasnโ€™t true. I had caredโ€”he just never seemed to see it.

โ€œOf course I do. You come first,โ€ I said, fully meaning it.

Thereโ€™s that sayingโ€”if you love someone, tell them. So I did, making sure Hayden knew exactly where he stood. That way, no matter what happened, thereโ€™d be no misunderstandings, no room for doubt.

Hayden gently lifted me so I was facing him. โ€œWe may be together, but weโ€™re still individuals. You donโ€™t need my permission to do what you want.โ€

โ€œHowโ€™s that fair?โ€ I shot back with a laugh. โ€œDoes that mean there are things you think you donโ€™t need to tell me?โ€

โ€œOf course not. Iโ€™d always tell you and get your approval,โ€ Hayden said, though it came off a bit like a double standard.

โ€œYouโ€™re really unfair to yourself,โ€ I teased, shaking my head.

His gaze deepened, his eyes locking with mine. โ€œIโ€™m a man. Itโ€™s different for you. Youโ€™re a womanโ€”you should be treated with more care. Whatever you do is fine.โ€

I couldnโ€™t help but laugh. โ€œYouโ€™re such a feminist. If we ever have a daughter, youโ€™re gonna spoil her rotten.โ€

His Adamโ€™s apple bobbed as he responded, โ€œMm, our daughter. Of course, Iโ€™ll spoil her.โ€

I froze for a second, then my face went bright red as I quickly buried it back into his neck. โ€œWho said Iโ€™d have a daughter with you?โ€

โ€œNot now,โ€ Hayden whispered softly in my ear. โ€œWeโ€™ll wait until after the wedding.โ€

The mention of a wedding reminded me of his earlier comment about needing to secure funding through Kylianโ€™s deal with the Johnstons. โ€œSpeaking of, howโ€™s the deal with Jace going?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s almost finalized,โ€ Hayden answered, tightening his arms around my waist. โ€œWhy? Youโ€™re eager to marry me already?โ€

I shook my head, hiding my embarrassment against his neck. โ€œNo, I was just asking.โ€

โ€œBut I want to,โ€ Hayden murmured. โ€œI think about it every day.โ€

The way he said it, like he hadnโ€™t already won me over, like he was still yearning for something, tugged at my heart. He already had me, but his words made it sound like he still hadnโ€™t fully reached me.

I couldnโ€™t bring myself to say anything as bold, so I went for a more subtle response. โ€œArenโ€™t we already together?โ€

โ€œSilly girl,โ€ Hayden sighed, his voice tender. โ€œI donโ€™t just want to be close to youโ€”I want to be your husband. I want to be with you in a way thatโ€™s recognized by everyone. I want to spend every single day of the rest of our lives together, facing everything, through thick and thin. I want to be the one you lean on when youโ€™re sad, the one who wipes your tears, and the one who holds you when youโ€™re happy. I want toโ€”โ€

I didnโ€™t let him finish. I kissed him, cutting him off.

What he said was enough. I didnโ€™t need any more words.

Tears welled up in my eyes, sliding down my cheeks as we kissed. Hayden seemed startled by my tears and gently pulled back, breaking the kiss.

I looked up at him, smiling through the tears, knowing this was the happiest Iโ€™d felt in the last ten years.
