Chapter 454

Yes, I was reminding him. I didnโ€™t want him getting any ideas. But I wasnโ€™t in the mood for a fight either, so I matched his serious tone.

โ€œJace, I flew all the way here. Do you really want to start an argument right now?โ€

He went quiet, his lips twitching like he wanted to say something snarky, but all he said was, โ€œGive me your luggage.โ€

I handed him my suitcase without a second thought, and we walked out of the airport together in silence.

Since he didnโ€™t bring up Steveโ€™s situation, I decided to. โ€œSo, whatโ€™s going on with Steve? Whatโ€™s this fight about?โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s still in detention. No visitors allowed right now,โ€ Jace said, making me frown.

So my trip here was basically pointless? The whole reason I came was because Jace said Steve was losing it, and I thought I could help.

โ€œBut Iโ€™m working on it. Youโ€™ll see himโ€”soon,โ€ Jace added, switching up the vibe.

I ignored that and pushed for more information. โ€œWhyโ€™d Steve get into a fight?โ€

โ€œIt happened during practice. The guyโ€™s name is Danilo Cruz. Heโ€™s a sparring partner at the gym but super unreliableโ€”shows up late, leaves early, doesnโ€™t focus. Steve asked for a replacement, and when Danilo got warned by management, he flipped. Started with some words, and then it escalated.โ€

With Steve being detained and no visitors allowed, this clearly wasnโ€™t just a regular fight. โ€œDid Danilo get hurt? Like, really hurt?โ€

โ€œHe fell and hit his head on a pool table. He didnโ€™t make it.โ€

The weight of his words sank in, and I stopped walking. Jace stopped too. โ€œTheyโ€™re still waiting on the autopsy report. If it shows Steve wasnโ€™t directly responsible, his sentence could be lighter.โ€

Could be. I hated how shaky that sounded. โ€œAnd if it shows Steve was responsible?โ€

One thought hit me hard: An eye for an eye. It didnโ€™t matter where you were; that rule was universal.

โ€œIโ€™m pulling every string I can. It wonโ€™t come to that,โ€ Jace said, glancing at his watch. โ€œYou havenโ€™t eaten yet, right? Let me get you something.โ€

I wasnโ€™t in the mood for food. โ€œIโ€™m not hungry.โ€

โ€œEven if youโ€™re not, you should eat. If you get sick, how do you think Iโ€™m supposed to explain that toโ€ฆ him?โ€ He gave me a look.

By โ€œhim,โ€ he meant Hayden.

Suddenly, I realized how insane Haydenโ€™s confidence was. He left me with Jace, my ex-fiancรฉ, the guy Iโ€™d been in love with for ten years. Even if Hayden trusted me, wasnโ€™t he even a little worried Jace might not be over me?

Chapter 454

โ€œYouโ€™re taking this babysitting thing pretty seriously,โ€ I said, my voice dripping with sarcasm.

Jace shot me a glance. His expression darkened.

We didnโ€™t talk again until we reached his car. As he opened the door for me, he asked, โ€œWho likes eating?โ€

Before I could answer, he said, โ€œI know a place.โ€

The drive was quiet, the city lights blurring outside as I stared out the window. My mind was too full to focus on anything.

When we finally got to the restaurant, I ordered something lightโ€”a kale salad with goat cheese. Jace, though, went all out, adding mushroom risotto and even throwing in dessert.

โ€œNo dessert,โ€ I said, shaking my head.

โ€œYes, dessert,โ€ he shot back. โ€œYou used to say sweets helped when you were down.โ€

I was surprised he remembered that.

โ€œNot every bad mood can be fixed with dessert,โ€ I muttered, unable to help myself.

I didnโ€™t need to be harsh, but something about being around him just brought it out.

โ€œDoes hurting me make you feel better?โ€ Jace asked, pouring me some water. โ€œDoes it make up for all the pain I caused?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ I said honestly, then added, โ€œBut I canโ€™t help wanting to hurt you anyway.โ€
