Chapter 479

Haydenโ€™s one sentence nearly made me see red. Now I was sure this whole mess between us was because of that ridiculous news report. Sure, I had some blame in this, but I was still fuming. Weโ€™d promised to trust each other, yet here he was, judging me over a single story without even asking my side.

I felt frustration rise in my chest. โ€œIf I said itโ€™s not convenient, would you just turn around and leave?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€ Of course, he would.

I clenched my teeth. โ€œHayden, when it comes to being a jerk, youโ€™re really unmatched.โ€

He didnโ€™t even flinch, just kept that calm, collected look that somehow made it even harder to stay mad.

Fuming, I spun around and dropped onto the couch with a huff. Hayden followed, sitting down tooโ€”but he left about a foot between us. This was the guy who used to pull me onto his lap if I so much as scooted an inch closer. Now, he was holding back. It was obvious where his mind was.

My chest tightened, and I looked at him, my voice wavering. โ€œDo you really want to break up with me?โ€

โ€œIt was you who said you wanted to break up,โ€ he replied, his voice deep and even. Iโ€™d noticed his voice always dropped like that when he was hurt, which only made it sound more intense.

I pouted, my throat tight. โ€œI didnโ€™t mean it. I was just mad because you didnโ€™t come see me.โ€

โ€œI did come,โ€ he said, keeping his words short.

โ€œBut I didnโ€™t know. I didnโ€™t see you. I wanted to see you when I was awake.โ€ My voice cracked. โ€œHayden, the first person I wanted to see when I opened my eyes was you.โ€

He didnโ€™t respond right away, just looked at me, his gaze softening for a split second before he looked away. โ€œAre you sure itโ€™s really me?โ€

I knew the news story had gotten to him. It made him question everything between us.

โ€œHayden, I saved Jace not because I still love him but because heโ€™s a person who needed help. Anyone in that positionโ€”Iโ€™d have done the same,โ€ I said, inching closer.

He didnโ€™t move as I slid next to him, reaching out to hold his arm. โ€œThat photo? It showed me holding Jaceโ€™s hand because he was critical. I was encouraging him while giving blood.โ€

He stayed silent, so I gripped his arm tighter. โ€œHayden, if you donโ€™t believe me, Iโ€™ll swearโ€”โ€

But he cut me off. โ€œItโ€™s not just the news.โ€

I froze. โ€œThen what?โ€

His eyes darkened. โ€œDonโ€™t you remember what you said?โ€

Confused, I shook his arm, practically pleading. โ€œWhat did I say?โ€

His jaw clenched, and he looked almost painfully restrained. โ€œAre you really gonna twist the knife?โ€

โ€œNo! I swear, I donโ€™t know what you mean,โ€ I said, shaking my head.

His gaze pinned me in place, intense and searching. โ€œAre you with me because you love me or because of something else?โ€

โ€œOf course, itโ€™s because I love you!โ€ I answered without a secondโ€™s hesitation.

โ€œBut you told Jace that the reason youโ€™re with me is because you were โ€˜movedโ€™ by me.โ€ His words hit like a punch to the gut.

When did I say that?

โ€œHayden, I neverโ€”I didnโ€™tโ€”โ€

โ€œYou did. In the car after the accident. I heard every word through the phone. Are you gonna deny it?โ€ My throat tightened as pieces of that conversation came back to me. Jace had said a lot during that crash, but I didnโ€™t recall ever saying I was with Hayden just out of gratitude.

โ€œKeira, I donโ€™t care who youโ€™ve loved before. But if youโ€™re with me, it needs to be out of loveโ€”not out of obligation.โ€ He paused, his voice steady but raw. โ€œI canโ€™t accept being some kind of second choice.โ€

โ€œHayden, youโ€™re clinging to one thing you overheard, and now youโ€™re doubting my feelings. Do you really think I donโ€™t love you? Canโ€™t you feel it?โ€ I said, my frustration spilling over.

โ€œMy heartโ€™s telling meโ€”you still love Jace more than me.โ€

Haydenโ€™s words hit me like a punch.
