Chapter 486
โMs. Kay, youโre here! I thought you werenโt coming,โ Ron said, striding in with a bag just as I was checking if breakfast had somehow disappeared into thin air.
โTa-da! Breakfast!โ he announced.
At that moment, it clicked. Breakfast had arrived all rightโjust not the one Wayne sent.
I gave Ron a look, waiting. He didnโt usually bring me breakfast without some kind of reason.
Sure enough, as he set the food down, he said, โI got called in at five this morning, and I was starving, so I, uh, ate the breakfast on your desk. This oneโs a replacement.โ
Oh, please. Like I was buying that.
But I was too tired to start anything. โYou didnโt have to replace it. I already ate.โ
Total lie. I hadnโt eaten at all; Iโd barely had an appetite the past few days. And when I did eat, I just felt queasy.
โCome on, I canโt let you skip breakfast. Unlessโฆyouโre saying my choice isnโt good enough?โ Ron asked, giving me a smirk. โThis is custom-made, just for you.โ
I cracked a smile. โCustom-made, huh? Guess Iโll see. If it looks good, maybe Iโll try a bite.โ
I opened the container: shrimp bisque, garlic toast, and my go-to side salad.
Yup, I knew exactly whoโd picked this combo.
โPerfect, right? It looks good, smells good, and itโs all the nutrition you need!โ Ron said, already unwrapping the utensils.
I snapped the lid shut. โEh, doesnโt look that appetizing. Not really feeling it.โ
Ron froze. โWait, this is all your favorite stuff. How come youโ?โ
I cut him off, locking eyes with him. โHow do you even know what my favorite foods are?โ
Ron stammered, โIโI heard you mention it. You told me, like, in one of our chats.โ
Yeah, right. That was the worst cover ever. I knew Hayden had sent him to deliver this, even though we were over. And the fact he was still pulling these stunts? Frustratingโฆand confusing.
What was he trying to prove here?
Part of me wanted to throw the food back in Haydenโs face and demand an answer. But I held back. If he wanted a reaction, heโd get the opposite.
โJust because I used to like it doesnโt mean I still do. People change. You can stop liking someone halfway through lifeโwhy not breakfast?โ I pushed the container back toward Ron.
Ron looked flustered. โUh, okayโฆso what do you want to eat? Just tell me, and IโllโIโll have someone bring it.โ
He looked desperate, like he was under orders to make sure I ate.
โPeri-bacon potato cakes,โ I said, throwing out something totally random that Macy used to make back in Chiverton. Delicious, but practically incendiary.
Ron looked utterly lost. โWait, what? Periโฆwhat?โ
Exactly. Peri-bacon potato cakes werenโt exactly popular in Seavora, so I wasnโt surprised. But Hayden wouldโve known.
โSee? You donโt even know what I want, let alone how to get it. Just take this so I can get back to work,โ I said, waving him off.
Ron looked at the food, hesitating. โJust eat this for now, and Iโll figure out the Peri thing later.โ
Hayden was obviously trying to show he still cared with this whole breakfast stunt. But I wasnโt about to give him the satisfaction.
If he wanted to play breakup games, then fine. Iโd play it better and leave him hanging.
โMr. Shane, I really canโt eat,โ I said, adding an extra touch of drama. โIโve been feeling nauseous the past few days. Just looking at food makes me want to throw up.โ Perfect excuse to get rid of it.
Ronโs eyes went wide as he looked at me. A second later, he practically bolted with the food. โOkay, okay. Iโll take it.โ
As soon as the door clicked shut, I swallowed hard.
