Chapter 501
I glanced down, noticing his soaked shoes. โThen howโd Hayden pull it off?โ
โNo clue. And nobody else seems to know, either,โ Jace tilted his umbrella up a bit, meeting my eyes.
โSo, you thought Iโd know? That you could get answers from me?โ
Jace held steady under my sharp stare. โI know you donโt.โ He held my gaze for a beat before looking away. โHeโs deliberately keeping it under wraps. But I did hear something.โ
โWhat?โ
โWord is that the boss at Quartz Cue gotโฆ well, โdealt with.โ Not sure if itโs true.โ He sounded hesitant, but I got what he was hinting at.
โYou think Hayden was involved?โ
Jace was quiet for a second. โMaybe. But Quartz Cue is huge in Houston. Their boss isnโt the kind of guy you justโฆ handle.โ The way he said it, I could tell heโd tried to meet this Quartz Cue boss himselfโand failed.
โI donโt know how Hayden helped Steve. And he never gave me a chance to ask.โ
Just then, a gust of wind sent a raindrop splashing against my cheek, cold and sharp. It felt just like the tears Iโd shed when Hayden pushed me away.
โHayden didnโt even let you explain?โ Jaceโs voice softened.
โHe did. But he still wouldnโt forgive me. Said he couldnโt be with a woman whoโd risk her life for another guy.โ I raised my umbrella, glancing over at Jace. โBut he got it all wrong. I didnโt do it for you, specifically.โ
โIโd do it for anyone. It just happened to be you, and given our pastโฆโ
โI get why Hayden misunderstood. Just likeโฆโ I hesitated. โJust like how I misread what happened with you and Tanya. You explained, but it still hurt.โ
โIโm sorry.โ The apology came easy for Jace, softer than I expected.
I let out a bitter laugh. He looked at me, then asked, โDo you want me to talk to him for you?โ
โNo. Itโd only make things worse, like when Tanya came to explain herself to me.โ As I said it, I realized how Hayden and I had ended up on the same track Jace and I had been on. Only this time, I was the one making mistakes without even seeing it.
Jace went quiet. After a moment, I added, โLook, Jace, weโre family now. From here on out, weโre real siblings.โ
โReaโฆโ
โYou may have played a part in what happened with Hayden and me, but the real problems are ours to handle. You donโt need to feel guilty.โ I wanted to end whatever lingering feelings or regret he might still have.
โOh, and that โblood debtโ you mentioned back in Houston? Someday, if I need blood, you can pay me back then. Blood bank buddies.โ I forced a smile. โNo regrets there.โ
Jace laughed, but it was tinged with sadness. โRea, I thought I knew you. Turns out Iโm only just starting to.โ
I gave a distant smile. Glancing back, I noticed Wayne in the kitchen window with Lindey, helping her make gnocchi. He was watching usโkeeping an eye, like he hadnโt given up yet. But Jace was still totally oblivious to Wayneโs feelings for me. I reached out, catching a raindrop sliding off the edge of my umbrella. โItโs normal, you know? Sometimes even couples together a lifetime, or siblings raised side by side, donโt really get each other.โ
Jace nodded. โYeah, we all think weโโ
He didnโt get to finish. My phone started ringingโa voice call. When I saw the caller ID, my heart skipped a beat.
