Chapter 501

I glanced down, noticing his soaked shoes. โ€œThen howโ€™d Hayden pull it off?โ€

โ€œNo clue. And nobody else seems to know, either,โ€ Jace tilted his umbrella up a bit, meeting my eyes.

โ€œSo, you thought Iโ€™d know? That you could get answers from me?โ€

Jace held steady under my sharp stare. โ€œI know you donโ€™t.โ€ He held my gaze for a beat before looking away. โ€œHeโ€™s deliberately keeping it under wraps. But I did hear something.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œWord is that the boss at Quartz Cue gotโ€ฆ well, โ€˜dealt with.โ€™ Not sure if itโ€™s true.โ€ He sounded hesitant, but I got what he was hinting at.

โ€œYou think Hayden was involved?โ€

Jace was quiet for a second. โ€œMaybe. But Quartz Cue is huge in Houston. Their boss isnโ€™t the kind of guy you justโ€ฆ handle.โ€ The way he said it, I could tell heโ€™d tried to meet this Quartz Cue boss himselfโ€”and failed.

โ€œI donโ€™t know how Hayden helped Steve. And he never gave me a chance to ask.โ€

Just then, a gust of wind sent a raindrop splashing against my cheek, cold and sharp. It felt just like the tears Iโ€™d shed when Hayden pushed me away.

โ€œHayden didnโ€™t even let you explain?โ€ Jaceโ€™s voice softened.

โ€œHe did. But he still wouldnโ€™t forgive me. Said he couldnโ€™t be with a woman whoโ€™d risk her life for another guy.โ€ I raised my umbrella, glancing over at Jace. โ€œBut he got it all wrong. I didnโ€™t do it for you, specifically.โ€

โ€œIโ€™d do it for anyone. It just happened to be you, and given our pastโ€ฆโ€

โ€œI get why Hayden misunderstood. Just likeโ€ฆโ€ I hesitated. โ€œJust like how I misread what happened with you and Tanya. You explained, but it still hurt.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry.โ€ The apology came easy for Jace, softer than I expected.

I let out a bitter laugh. He looked at me, then asked, โ€œDo you want me to talk to him for you?โ€

โ€œNo. Itโ€™d only make things worse, like when Tanya came to explain herself to me.โ€ As I said it, I realized how Hayden and I had ended up on the same track Jace and I had been on. Only this time, I was the one making mistakes without even seeing it.

Jace went quiet. After a moment, I added, โ€œLook, Jace, weโ€™re family now. From here on out, weโ€™re real siblings.โ€

โ€œReaโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYou may have played a part in what happened with Hayden and me, but the real problems are ours to handle. You donโ€™t need to feel guilty.โ€ I wanted to end whatever lingering feelings or regret he might still have.

โ€œOh, and that โ€˜blood debtโ€™ you mentioned back in Houston? Someday, if I need blood, you can pay me back then. Blood bank buddies.โ€ I forced a smile. โ€œNo regrets there.โ€

Jace laughed, but it was tinged with sadness. โ€œRea, I thought I knew you. Turns out Iโ€™m only just starting to.โ€

I gave a distant smile. Glancing back, I noticed Wayne in the kitchen window with Lindey, helping her make gnocchi. He was watching usโ€”keeping an eye, like he hadnโ€™t given up yet. But Jace was still totally oblivious to Wayneโ€™s feelings for me. I reached out, catching a raindrop sliding off the edge of my umbrella. โ€œItโ€™s normal, you know? Sometimes even couples together a lifetime, or siblings raised side by side, donโ€™t really get each other.โ€

Jace nodded. โ€œYeah, we all think weโ€”โ€

He didnโ€™t get to finish. My phone started ringingโ€”a voice call. When I saw the caller ID, my heart skipped a beat.
