Chapter 513

Yunaโ€™s eyes flickered with a flash of panic, then she shook her head again. Seemed like that was her go-to move. I raised an eyebrow. โ€œIf he didnโ€™t touch you or kiss you, what makes you think heโ€™s in love?โ€

Her cheeks flushed as she looked down. โ€œHeโ€ฆ well, there was one time he almost kissed me.โ€

โ€œAlmost?โ€ I tried to picture Wadeโ€™s usual, reserved self. โ€œWas he drinking?โ€ Guys get weird when theyโ€™re tipsy, sometimes mixing up reality with whoeverโ€™s on their mind.

Yuna didnโ€™t shake her head this time. Instead, she nodded slightly. โ€œYeah, last week he was kinda down and had a few drinks.โ€

โ€œI asked what was wrong, and he said itโ€™d been a hundred days since his advisor passed.โ€

โ€œHe said he missed herโ€ฆ then he looked at me and leaned in like he was going to kiss me.โ€

Rightโ€”exactly a hundred days since Narelle had passed. Hearing this, it hit me: Wade mustโ€™ve been seeing Narelle in Yunaโ€™s place. My heart sank. Narelle and I had shared so much in common, but Yuna? She was nothing like her. How could he confuse the two? It had to be the alcohol.

โ€œSo why didnโ€™t he go through with it?โ€ I asked, watching her face. โ€œDid you pull away, or did he stop himself?โ€

Yunaโ€™s blush deepened. โ€œHe stopped himself. Then he apologized.โ€

โ€œAnd thatโ€™s why you think he likes you?โ€ I raised an eyebrow. โ€œAll those romance novels, and you still got it this wrong?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not just that,โ€ she shot back, sounding a little defensive. โ€œItโ€™s everything else. Heโ€™s been so sweet to me, and everyone at the library thinks weโ€™re dating. Sometimes they even tease us, and he never says theyโ€™re wrong.โ€

She looked down, hurt flashing across her face. โ€œAnd sometimes, when he shows up late and sees some other guy talking to me, he gets all annoyedโ€”like, almost jealous.โ€

Listening to her, I could tell she wasnโ€™t making it up. With all the signals Wade was throwing out, it was no wonder sheโ€™d misread things. It was clear Wade had his own stuff to work through, and Iโ€™d have to talk to him about it. But right now, Yuna needed someone to help her process this mess.

โ€œYou mentioned he talked about his advisor, right?โ€ I asked carefully. โ€œDid it ever cross your mind to wonder why heโ€™s still mourning her so much?โ€

Yunaโ€™s brow furrowed, and she hesitated. โ€œAre you saying his advisor wasโ€ฆ someone he cared about?โ€

I was about to nod when she quickly shook her head. No way! How could he be in love with his advisor? Theyโ€™re usually, you knowโ€ฆ older!

I couldnโ€™t help but smile. Classic Yuna, still imagining all academic staff as gray-haired people in tweed jackets.

โ€œKRA has plenty of young, attractive lecturers,โ€ I told her, considering if I should tell her the whole story or let her figure it out slowly.

โ€œYou mean Wadeโ€™s advisor was a young, beautiful woman?โ€ she asked, putting the pieces together.

Seeing her starting to understand, I decided it was best to tell her nowโ€”better a little hurt now than a lot more later.

โ€œYuna, I actually know Wadeโ€ฆ and I know about his relationship with Narelle,โ€ I said, gently explaining everything I knew about their past.

When I finished, Yunaโ€™s eyes were glassy. โ€œTheir love story was that beautiful?โ€

โ€œIt was,โ€ I said softly. โ€œSo even though Narelleโ€™s gone, Wadeโ€™s heartโ€ฆ itโ€™s not an open door.โ€

She was quiet, and I was about to say more when the loudspeaker suddenly crackled to life. โ€œAttention, everyone. Due to the heavy rain, we have received notice to close early. Please exit the building promptly.โ€

An employee came by to remind us as well, so Yuna and I quickly gathered our things and headed out into the storm. Once we got outside, it was a madhouse trying to get a cab. We huddled under the awning, glancing around and wondering how weโ€™d get home.

Suddenly, someone shouted, โ€œThe dam broke! Floodwaters are coming!โ€
