Chapter 513
Yunaโs eyes flickered with a flash of panic, then she shook her head again. Seemed like that was her go-to move. I raised an eyebrow. โIf he didnโt touch you or kiss you, what makes you think heโs in love?โ
Her cheeks flushed as she looked down. โHeโฆ well, there was one time he almost kissed me.โ
โAlmost?โ I tried to picture Wadeโs usual, reserved self. โWas he drinking?โ Guys get weird when theyโre tipsy, sometimes mixing up reality with whoeverโs on their mind.
Yuna didnโt shake her head this time. Instead, she nodded slightly. โYeah, last week he was kinda down and had a few drinks.โ
โI asked what was wrong, and he said itโd been a hundred days since his advisor passed.โ
โHe said he missed herโฆ then he looked at me and leaned in like he was going to kiss me.โ
Rightโexactly a hundred days since Narelle had passed. Hearing this, it hit me: Wade mustโve been seeing Narelle in Yunaโs place. My heart sank. Narelle and I had shared so much in common, but Yuna? She was nothing like her. How could he confuse the two? It had to be the alcohol.
โSo why didnโt he go through with it?โ I asked, watching her face. โDid you pull away, or did he stop himself?โ
Yunaโs blush deepened. โHe stopped himself. Then he apologized.โ
โAnd thatโs why you think he likes you?โ I raised an eyebrow. โAll those romance novels, and you still got it this wrong?โ
โItโs not just that,โ she shot back, sounding a little defensive. โItโs everything else. Heโs been so sweet to me, and everyone at the library thinks weโre dating. Sometimes they even tease us, and he never says theyโre wrong.โ
She looked down, hurt flashing across her face. โAnd sometimes, when he shows up late and sees some other guy talking to me, he gets all annoyedโlike, almost jealous.โ
Listening to her, I could tell she wasnโt making it up. With all the signals Wade was throwing out, it was no wonder sheโd misread things. It was clear Wade had his own stuff to work through, and Iโd have to talk to him about it. But right now, Yuna needed someone to help her process this mess.
โYou mentioned he talked about his advisor, right?โ I asked carefully. โDid it ever cross your mind to wonder why heโs still mourning her so much?โ
Yunaโs brow furrowed, and she hesitated. โAre you saying his advisor wasโฆ someone he cared about?โ
I was about to nod when she quickly shook her head. No way! How could he be in love with his advisor? Theyโre usually, you knowโฆ older!
I couldnโt help but smile. Classic Yuna, still imagining all academic staff as gray-haired people in tweed jackets.
โKRA has plenty of young, attractive lecturers,โ I told her, considering if I should tell her the whole story or let her figure it out slowly.
โYou mean Wadeโs advisor was a young, beautiful woman?โ she asked, putting the pieces together.
Seeing her starting to understand, I decided it was best to tell her nowโbetter a little hurt now than a lot more later.
โYuna, I actually know Wadeโฆ and I know about his relationship with Narelle,โ I said, gently explaining everything I knew about their past.
When I finished, Yunaโs eyes were glassy. โTheir love story was that beautiful?โ
โIt was,โ I said softly. โSo even though Narelleโs gone, Wadeโs heartโฆ itโs not an open door.โ
She was quiet, and I was about to say more when the loudspeaker suddenly crackled to life. โAttention, everyone. Due to the heavy rain, we have received notice to close early. Please exit the building promptly.โ
An employee came by to remind us as well, so Yuna and I quickly gathered our things and headed out into the storm. Once we got outside, it was a madhouse trying to get a cab. We huddled under the awning, glancing around and wondering how weโd get home.
Suddenly, someone shouted, โThe dam broke! Floodwaters are coming!โ
