Chapter 515
Well, if his goal was to make my heart shatter just a little moreโฆ mission accomplished.
Two hours later, after all the tests, I spotted Yuna and Hayden in the waiting area. Yuna rushed over and grabbed my hand. โHow are you feeling? Are you hurt anywhere?โ
โNo,โ I lied with a smile. โThe doctor said I must have, like, superpowers or somethingโno injuries, not even a scratch.โ
Truth was, I had scrapes and bruises all over, but I wasnโt about to make her feel worse. She already felt guilty enough that Iโd almost been swept away saving her, and I wasnโt going to make it worse by telling her the details. Besides, Hayden had already made it clear he was done with me.
โI donโt believe you,โ Yuna said, reaching to check for herself.
I pressed her hands down gently. โYuna, Iโm exhausted. I just want to sleep for a while. Really, Iโm fine. Go home and get some rest.โ
โIโm not leaving,โ she insisted. โIโll stay here with you. Haydenโs here too.โ
She tugged at his arm, trying to pull him closer, but I looked away as he stepped over, refusing to meet his eyes.
โLetโs step outside,โ he murmured to Yuna.
A minute later, I could hear her voice through the door, sharp and accusing. โHayden, whatโs going on with you and Keira? Did you guys have a fight? Even if you did, she almost died saving me. How can you be so cold toward her?โ
Her words hit like a punch to the chest, sharp enough to bring tears to my eyes. I turned my head into the pillow, letting them soak into the fabric.
โI told you there was going to be a storm,โ Haydenโs voice came, low and tense. โI specifically asked you not to go to the library. Why didnโt you listen?โ
Yuna went quiet. I knew that guilty silence.
โAnd why was Keira there? Hmm?โ he continued, his tone getting sharper. โIf youโd just listened, none of this wouldโve happened.โ
Each word hit harder, Yuna staying quiet as he finished his lecture.
Then, in a small but steady voice, she asked, โDid you really break up with Keira? Why?โ
Silence.
โDid you do something to hurt her?โ she pressed, her voice breaking. โOr are you just done with her now that youโve got money and status?โ
Her words hit me like a punch to the chest, cutting right to the questions Iโd been too scared to ask.
โDonโt involve yourself in this, Yuna,โ Hayden replied, dodging her question.
โHayden Hart,โ she shot back, her voice climbing with frustration. โI know youโre different now, but I warned youโif you ever changed, Iโd stop calling you my brother.โ
โSo, are you done with me, then?โ he asked, voice cold.
Yuna didnโt miss a beat. โIf you make things right with Keira, youโll still be my brother,โ she said, laying it out as clear as an ultimatum.
Silence. But she didnโt let it go, her voice breaking. โYou love her, Hayden. I know you doโฆโ
โYuna,โ he cut in, his tone harsh, โloving someone doesnโt mean youโre meant to be together.โ
That sentence shattered something in me. Tears slid down my face, unstoppable.
So that was it. Heโd made up his mind. If he didnโt want to be with me, fine. I wasnโt so weak that I couldnโt live without him. I wasnโt about to beg.
Angrily, I yanked the blanket over my head, blocking out their conversation from outside. The air under the covers was stifling, pressing against my chest, but Iโd rather suffocate here than keep hearing Haydenโs cold, indifferent words.
Just as I started to settle into the quiet, someone tugged on my blanket. I wiped at my tears quickly, thinking it was Yuna.
โWhat, you survived the flood just to smother yourself now?โ came a voice from outside the covers, totally catching me off guard.
It wasnโt Yuna. And, of course, it wasnโt Hayden.
Honestly, right then, I wouldโve preferred either of them over the one person whoโd just shown up.
