Chapter 517

Wayneโ€™s eyes darkened slightly. Just a minute ago, Iโ€™d leaned away when heโ€™d tried to fix my hair, but with Jace, I hadnโ€™t even flinched. The difference in how I reacted to each of them was probably hard to miss.

But since weโ€™d just cleared the air, Wayne kept his cool. When he noticed me looking, he even gave me a calm smile and teased, โ€œGuess youโ€™re still more comfortable with Jaceโ€™s touch.โ€

I had no idea how to respond.

Jace smirked, chiming in, โ€œWell, she almost became my wife.โ€

I couldnโ€™t respond to that either.

Wayneโ€™s smile didnโ€™t waver. โ€œYeahโ€ฆ almost.โ€

Jace shot him a look, eyebrow raised, as if to say, โ€˜Did I say anything untrue?โ€™

โ€œYou feel a little warm,โ€ Jace said, pulling his hand back before calling over a passing nurse. โ€œCould we get a thermometer?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m fine, itโ€™s probably justโ€”โ€ I started, but Jace cut me off.

โ€œWhether youโ€™re fine or not isnโ€™t up to you,โ€ he said firmly. The nurse returned with a thermometer and pressed it to my forehead.

โ€œ99.9 degrees,โ€ she announced.

Jace spoke to her authoritatively, โ€œPlease let the doctor know, and see if the blood test results are ready. We need to check for infection or if itโ€™s just from the cold.โ€

He sounded like a total pro; youโ€™d almost think he was a doctor himself.

The nurse nodded and left, and Wayne handed me a cup of warm water. โ€œHere, drink this. Itโ€™s probably just from being chilled,โ€ he said gently.

The way they were tag-teaming, both fussing over me, was honestly a little much.

I was about to tell them both to take a break when Jace turned to Wayne first. โ€œYou should head home. Arenโ€™t Mom and Dad setting you up with someone tomorrow? Better not stay up too late; you donโ€™t want to look tired.โ€

I looked at Wayne, surprised. โ€œYouโ€™re going on a date? Why didnโ€™t you mention it?โ€

Wayne smiled lightly. โ€œDidnโ€™t get a chance to mention it; Jace showed up before I could say anything.โ€

The implication was clearโ€”Jace had interrupted his moment with me. Jaceโ€™s expression darkened slightly.

Though they put on a front of brotherly harmony, there was always this undercurrent of rivalry between them.

I wasnโ€™t about to be dragged into whatever silent power struggle was going on, nor would I let myself be a pawn in it.

โ€œCongratulations,โ€ I said to Wayne with a smile. โ€œIf your parents picked her, she must be amazing.โ€

โ€œYeah, my parents have always had good taste,โ€ he replied, giving me a look full of meaning that was impossible to miss. He was reminding me that Iโ€™d once been one of their โ€œgoodโ€ choices too.

Too bad that fate never aligned for me and the Johnston family.

โ€œWayne, Rea needs to rest now,โ€ Jace said bluntly, making it clear he was asking him to leave.

Wayne reached out and patted my head gently, and this time, I let him. โ€œRest up. Iโ€™ll come see you tomorrow.โ€

โ€œNo need. Iโ€™ll be discharged soon,โ€ I replied, politely brushing off the offer.

Wayne just smiled and glanced at Jace. โ€œTake good care of her, or I might just have to report you to Mom and Dad.โ€

Jace answered smoothly, โ€œYou wonโ€™t get the chance.โ€ He gave Wayneโ€™s shoes a pointed look. โ€œOh, by the way, I just ordered a few new pairs. Iโ€™ll have Gavin bring you one laterโ€”wearing my shoes might give you some extra luck on that date.โ€

Wayne chuckled, waving it off. โ€œNah, keep โ€˜em. Besides, Mom and Dad are busy finding you a match too.โ€ He gave me a playful wink before heading out.

These two were clearly trading subtle barbs, teasing but still competing. I kept my smile polite, pretending not to notice the tension.

After Wayne left, Jace handed me the cup of water heโ€™d been holding. โ€œSo, what do you think? Is he trying to mess with me, orโ€ฆ does he still have feelings for you?โ€
