Chapter 521

I held my breath, meeting his gaze. Hayden was looking right at me, steady and unhesitating. He was always so direct, so open. Meanwhile, I was the one who felt unsettled, like the breakup had somehow been my fault.

โ€œWell, speak of the devil. Hayden, we were just talking about you,โ€ Ron said, ever the troublemaker.

Hayden nodded, standing there with that perfect posture of his, not saying a word.

โ€œArenโ€™t you curious what we were saying?โ€ Ron pressed, clearly trying to stir the pot. Ron couldnโ€™t resist pushing boundaries; it was practically his hobby.

Hayden stayed silent, so Ron scratched his nose. โ€œWe were saying youโ€™ve lost weight, and that youโ€ฆโ€ He trailed off, then winked at me. โ€œMs. Kay, letโ€™s keep the rest a secret from him.โ€

I almost laughed, a small smile sneaking its way to my lips. Hayden happened to glance over just then, but I quickly looked away. He might not want me anymore, but that didnโ€™t mean Iโ€™d let him think I couldnโ€™t live without him.

At lunch, I finally got a call from Sasha. Iโ€™d been meaning to check in, but I didnโ€™t want to interrupt her if she was with Thorsten.

โ€œHowโ€™re you holding up?โ€ I asked the moment I picked up.

โ€œGot through today without a hitch,โ€ Sasha replied, sounding relaxed.

I didnโ€™t ask for details. Sheโ€™d spent years by Thorstenโ€™s side, hiding her resentment, even bearing him a daughter. She could handle anything.

Thinking back to when weโ€™d first met, Iโ€™d written her off as just another pretty face. That assumption felt pretty ridiculous now.

โ€œSo,โ€ I said, sensing there was more, โ€œwas there another reason youโ€™re calling?โ€

โ€œI found the person you were looking for,โ€ Sasha said, catching me off guard. โ€œJust wanted to know if you want to meet them in person.โ€

Iโ€™d expected this to take weeks. The speed was unexpectedโ€”and thrilling.

โ€œIf itโ€™s possible, Iโ€™d love to meet them myself,โ€ I replied, excitement bubbling up.

โ€œIโ€™ll send you the address. Just come by,โ€ Sasha said, then hung up and texted me the location.

Only problem? The place was pretty far, and my car was still in the shop from a fender bender. Taking a cab felt impractical, so I went to find Ron. โ€œMr. Shane, my carโ€™s out for repairs. I need to head out for some personal businessโ€”think I could borrow a company car?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t ask. Just take one,โ€ Ron said, as generous as ever.

โ€œThank you!โ€ I turned to leave, but he stopped me.

โ€œYou mentioned an accidentโ€”are you alright?โ€ he asked, sounding concerned.

โ€œYeah, I just got distracted and bumped into someone. Insurance has it handled.โ€

โ€œAs long as youโ€™re okay. Go on, take the car.โ€ He opened a drawer and pulled out an invitation, handing it to me.

I skimmed it and got his drift right away. โ€œYou want me to attend this reception on Friday?โ€

โ€œYeah. Are you free?โ€ he asked, eyeing me closely.

โ€œI mean, technically, yes, but I donโ€™t really see the point,โ€ I said, setting the invitation back on his desk.

Ron raised an eyebrow. โ€œOh?โ€

I gave him a polite smile. โ€œThe partnership between the Hart family and the Johnstons doesnโ€™t have anything to do with me.โ€

โ€œOf course it does. This collaboration is based on Haydenโ€™s new projectโ€”a huge accomplishment for our company. As part of management, you should be there,โ€ Ron pressed, never one to back down easily.

But I shook my head. โ€œShould doesnโ€™t mean must. Letโ€™s just say Iโ€™m busy that night.โ€

I turned and headed for the door. Ron called after me, but I kept moving. Just as I was opening the door, he asked, โ€œSo, where are you going with the car?โ€

I couldnโ€™t help myself. โ€œI have a date.โ€

With that, I smiled, shut the door, and turned aroundโ€”only to find Hayden standing just a step away, his eyes fixed on me, intense as ever.
