Chapter 527

Hayden didnโ€™t answer right away, but I could tell he already knew more than he was letting on. โ€œWhy wonโ€™t you just tell me?โ€ Frustration spilled over, and my hand hit the seat between us.

The car lurched to a stop; his grip white-knuckled the steering wheel, veins popping. I couldnโ€™t stop staring.

โ€œFor the money,โ€ he finally said.

I turned, searching his face, but he kept it turned away, giving me nothing. Then, the thought of Yunaโ€™s illness struck me. โ€œWas itโ€ฆ was it to pay for Yunaโ€™s treatment?โ€

Hayden popped open the glove compartment, pulled out a cigarette, and after a few clicks, lit it. He took a long drag, his voice low. โ€œMy father was responsible for your parentsโ€™ deaths. Thatโ€™s a debtโ€”a sin he left behind. So, now, I owe you a life.โ€

He wasnโ€™t answering my question directly, but heโ€™d given me a truth that stung more. I watched him, distant as he smoked. โ€œAnd how do you plan to repay thatโ€ฆ life debt?โ€

The cigarette trembled just a bit in his hand, but he didnโ€™t answer. Instead, he asked, โ€œWhat exactly did Thorsten say?โ€

Avoiding any talk of us wasnโ€™t an option, but I wasnโ€™t ready to press him. So, I repeated what Thorsten had told me.

When I finished, Hayden simply asked, โ€œAnd what do you think?โ€

I stared out the window at the empty factory Iโ€™d been held in for hours. โ€œI think Thorstenโ€™s trying to kill two birds with one stone.โ€

โ€œOh?โ€ His gaze met mine in the rearview mirror.

โ€œHe had Sasha bring me here, got in my head with all thisโ€ฆ Sure, on the surface, it looked like he wanted me dead. But Sasha turned around and helped me escape. Thorsten wanted me to know the truthโ€”he wants me to hate the Johnstons.โ€

Haydenโ€™s eyes stayed on me, but I didnโ€™t look back. โ€œThorstenโ€™s making sure I know that, even if he bribed your dad to go after mine, the real mastermind was still the Johnstons,โ€

โ€œAnd hating the Johnstons doesโ€ฆ what?โ€ Haydenโ€™s tone was ice. โ€œWhat could you even do to them?โ€

I faced him. โ€œAre you trying to push my buttons or just donโ€™t think I have it in me?โ€

His gaze stayed locked on mine. โ€œIf it really was the Johnstonsโ€ฆ what would you do?โ€

The question tightened something in my chest. Iโ€™d suspected Matthewโ€™s involvement, but facing what Iโ€™d do if it was true? I didnโ€™t know. Go to the police, make him pay, or just confront him, get the answers I deserved, and walk away?

Right now, all I knew was that I needed the truth straight from them.

โ€œHayden, take me to the Johnston residence.โ€

He didnโ€™t say a word, just stubbed out his cigarette and started the engine.

When we pulled up to the gates, I stepped out, feeling that sense of finality settle in. To my surprise, Hayden got out too.

โ€œYouโ€™re coming in?โ€

He nodded. โ€œThis isnโ€™t just your grudge to settleโ€”itโ€™s my fatherโ€™s mess, too,โ€ he said, leaving no room to argue.

Together, we walked into the Johnston residence. Isabelโ€™s eyes lit up as she saw me. โ€œRea, Mr. and Mrs. Johnston are waiting for you.โ€

My stomach dropped. They already knew I was coming, which meant Thorsten had tipped them offโ€”and if that was true, then everything heโ€™d told me probably was, too.
