Chapter 527
Hayden didnโt answer right away, but I could tell he already knew more than he was letting on. โWhy wonโt you just tell me?โ Frustration spilled over, and my hand hit the seat between us.
The car lurched to a stop; his grip white-knuckled the steering wheel, veins popping. I couldnโt stop staring.
โFor the money,โ he finally said.
I turned, searching his face, but he kept it turned away, giving me nothing. Then, the thought of Yunaโs illness struck me. โWas itโฆ was it to pay for Yunaโs treatment?โ
Hayden popped open the glove compartment, pulled out a cigarette, and after a few clicks, lit it. He took a long drag, his voice low. โMy father was responsible for your parentsโ deaths. Thatโs a debtโa sin he left behind. So, now, I owe you a life.โ
He wasnโt answering my question directly, but heโd given me a truth that stung more. I watched him, distant as he smoked. โAnd how do you plan to repay thatโฆ life debt?โ
The cigarette trembled just a bit in his hand, but he didnโt answer. Instead, he asked, โWhat exactly did Thorsten say?โ
Avoiding any talk of us wasnโt an option, but I wasnโt ready to press him. So, I repeated what Thorsten had told me.
When I finished, Hayden simply asked, โAnd what do you think?โ
I stared out the window at the empty factory Iโd been held in for hours. โI think Thorstenโs trying to kill two birds with one stone.โ
โOh?โ His gaze met mine in the rearview mirror.
โHe had Sasha bring me here, got in my head with all thisโฆ Sure, on the surface, it looked like he wanted me dead. But Sasha turned around and helped me escape. Thorsten wanted me to know the truthโhe wants me to hate the Johnstons.โ
Haydenโs eyes stayed on me, but I didnโt look back. โThorstenโs making sure I know that, even if he bribed your dad to go after mine, the real mastermind was still the Johnstons,โ
โAnd hating the Johnstons doesโฆ what?โ Haydenโs tone was ice. โWhat could you even do to them?โ
I faced him. โAre you trying to push my buttons or just donโt think I have it in me?โ
His gaze stayed locked on mine. โIf it really was the Johnstonsโฆ what would you do?โ
The question tightened something in my chest. Iโd suspected Matthewโs involvement, but facing what Iโd do if it was true? I didnโt know. Go to the police, make him pay, or just confront him, get the answers I deserved, and walk away?
Right now, all I knew was that I needed the truth straight from them.
โHayden, take me to the Johnston residence.โ
He didnโt say a word, just stubbed out his cigarette and started the engine.
When we pulled up to the gates, I stepped out, feeling that sense of finality settle in. To my surprise, Hayden got out too.
โYouโre coming in?โ
He nodded. โThis isnโt just your grudge to settleโitโs my fatherโs mess, too,โ he said, leaving no room to argue.
Together, we walked into the Johnston residence. Isabelโs eyes lit up as she saw me. โRea, Mr. and Mrs. Johnston are waiting for you.โ
My stomach dropped. They already knew I was coming, which meant Thorsten had tipped them offโand if that was true, then everything heโd told me probably was, too.
