Chapter 529

โ€œRea, calm down. Let Matthew finish,โ€ Lindey tried, her voice soft but strained.

Matthew adjusted his glasses, looking almostโ€ฆregretful. โ€œRea, if I told you I never intended for your father to dieโ€ฆwould you believe me?โ€

Thorsten had already told me everything. And now Matthew wanted to rewrite the story? Fine. Iโ€™d hear him out.

โ€œYour father had a gift for distribution, something I couldnโ€™t match. But he didnโ€™t want to partner with me; he wanted to go solo. If he did, Seavora wouldโ€™ve been his for the taking,โ€ Matthew paused, gathering himself. โ€œPeople are selfish by natureโ€”itโ€™s unavoidable.โ€

โ€œSo yes, I was jealous. More than that, I resented him. It felt like his refusal to work with me was a judgment, like he was saying I wasnโ€™t good enough.โ€

โ€œAnd when he landed that contract with Thorstenโ€”the one Iโ€™d been fighting forโ€”it only proved his talent.โ€

โ€œI knew that contract was the key to everything I wanted. Fueled by jealousy and a need to win, I decided Iโ€™d take that project from him.โ€

Matthew pulled off his glasses, rubbing his eyes. โ€œSo I hired someone to scare him, to push him away from the deal with Thorsten.โ€

โ€œButโ€ฆthe person I hired went too far. He thought โ€˜solving the problem for goodโ€™ was the best option, andโ€ฆhe made your parents disappear.โ€

I felt my blood run cold. He was shifting the blame.

โ€œRea, while I never wanted your parents dead, my greed set everything in motion. I wonโ€™t absolve myself; Iโ€™m the one responsible for their deaths. Even with my success all these years, Iโ€™ve carried that guilt,โ€ he said, but I couldnโ€™t bear another word.

โ€œSo, you turned that guilt into kindness toward me, didnโ€™t you?โ€ I cut in, my voice bitter.

Matthew faltered, giving a small nod. Lindey stepped in, her tone gentle, almost pleading. โ€œRea, itโ€™s not like that. We really do love you. Weโ€™ve cared for you, truly.โ€

I scoffed, remembering how Jace and I shared the same blood type. โ€œYou cared for me so that if Jace ever needed saving, Iโ€™d be there. Isnโ€™t that right?โ€

โ€œRea,โ€ Lindey shook her head, trying to deny it.

But Matthew was blunt. โ€œWe did consider that possibilityโ€ฆbut that doesnโ€™t mean our love for you wasnโ€™t real. Love. Bought with my parentsโ€™ lives. Their care was just a thin mask, barely hiding their guilt.โ€

โ€œRea, every word Iโ€™ve told you today is the truth. And, honestly, saying it out loudโ€ฆitโ€™s been a relief. Now I can die in peace,โ€ he said, looking oddly calm.

I felt my control slip. โ€œYou feel relieved? You think you can just rest in peace? And my parentsโ€”how are they supposed to rest?โ€ My voice cracked, my composure shattering.

Chapter 529

Lindey was already in tears. โ€œIโ€™m so sorryโ€ฆMatthew has suffered with this guilt for ten years. He rarely sleeps through the night, wakes up in terror half the time. And now heโ€™s sickโ€ฆItโ€™s his punishment.โ€

โ€œSo what? My parents are gone. Their lives, their futuresโ€”all stolen by your selfishness,โ€ I spat, my voice heavy with anger.

Losing them ruined my life too. No matter how they tried to make it up, nothing could heal the pain of growing up without my parents.

โ€œI know nothing I say can change anything. Iโ€™m ready to accept any punishment, anything you need,โ€ Matthew said, coughing hard. Lindey reached out to steady him.

He waved her off, took a breath. โ€œRea, Lindey knew nothing about what I did. She only found out today, right before you both arrived. She had no part in it. Pleaseโ€ฆdonโ€™t hold her responsible. Can you do that for me?โ€

โ€œMatthewโ€ฆโ€ Lindey sobbed, clutching his arm, burying her face against his shoulder, shaking her head. โ€œPleaseโ€ฆdonโ€™tโ€ฆโ€

Matthew patted her hand. โ€œStop crying. Go ahead and call the police.โ€

Lindey hid her face in his arm, fists weakly thudding against his back.

The room felt like it was drowning in sorrow, every breath thick and heavy, like I couldnโ€™t find enough air.

Then, Hayden, whoโ€™d been silent through it all, finally spoke, breaking the tension. โ€œMr. Johnston, thereโ€™s someone missing in your story.โ€
