Listen to this chapter:

โ€œSnooker? Dude, this is a fancy party, not some run-down pool hall. If youโ€™re here for games, youโ€™re in the wrong place,โ€ Ron scoffed, tightening his grip on Brunoโ€™s arm. โ€œLet go.โ€

Brunoโ€™s face flushed, clearly feeling the pain, but he still didnโ€™t let go of me. Just then, a voice Iโ€™d know anywhere broke through the tension.

โ€œWhatโ€™s going on here?โ€ Haydenโ€™s voice was low, dangerous, as he strode over, his gaze locking onto Brunoโ€™s hand on mine. Dressed in a sharp black suit, he looked at Bruno with an intense, unreadable expression.

Bruno plastered on a smug grin. โ€œMr. Hart, I was just inviting this lovely lady to a little game, but sheโ€™s not exactly feeling friendly.โ€

Haydenโ€™s eyes flicked back to me, then pinned Bruno in place. โ€œAnd why should she be?โ€ His voice was ice. โ€œWho are you, and who let you in?โ€

Just as he said it, someone whispered in Haydenโ€™s ear. He gave a quick nod. โ€œMake an announcement,โ€ he said firmly. โ€œRemove this man and whoever he came with from the event.โ€

Bruno laughed, sneering. โ€œYou think you can throw me out? Youโ€™re just some street rat the Harts picked up. Who do you think you are?โ€

Hayden didnโ€™t flinch. He barely needed to. His security team closed in, but he held up a hand, stopping them. Bruno just smirked, throwing a smug look our way before he left. Right before disappearing, he gave me an annoying little whistle. โ€œKeira, donโ€™t think youโ€™re off the hook for that game.โ€

Ugh. Absolute worst.

โ€œWhat a total trash bag,โ€ Ron muttered, his eyes darting to Hayden.

Before I could say anything, Hayden turned and walked away. Ron watched him for a second, like he wanted to say something, but instead, he glanced down at my wrist. โ€œYouโ€™re red. Can you believe these creeps?โ€ He took my hand gently, looking it over. โ€œDoes it hurt?โ€ Then he blew softly on my wrist, and out of nowhere, I felt my nose sting, like I might start crying.

Lately, Iโ€™d been all over the place, emotions way too close to the surface. Anytime anyone showed me even a sliver of kindness, it hit way too hard.

โ€œThat scumbagโ€ฆ if he comes near you again, Iโ€™llโ€“โ€ Ron stopped, noticing my watery eyes. I quickly pulled my hand back, hiding it behind me.

โ€œIโ€™m fine, really,โ€ I said, trying to keep my voice steady.

โ€œItโ€™s my fault for bringing you here,โ€ Ron muttered, guilt etched into his face.

I shook my head, glancing around. โ€œHow much longer do we have to stay?โ€

The last place I wanted to be was here, especially when Hayden had looked right through me like I didnโ€™t matter.

Chapter 530

โ€œIf youโ€™re done, weโ€™ll go,โ€ Ron said, gentle as ever.

I hadnโ€™t known him that well before, but tonight heโ€™d been nothing but attentive and kind. As we made our way toward the exit, we had to pass through the main hall. And there he was โ€“ Hayden, up on stage with Chadwick Hart โ€“ the Hart family head โ€“ and Kylian. Chadwick was mid-speech, hyping Hayden up to the whole crowd.

The room broke into applause, and Hayden gave a little nod. When I looked at him up there, he looked like a whole different person. Like, who was this guy?

You know how people say that when someone gets rich and famous, they forget where they came from? Well, Hayden and I split ways right as he was rising up. And okay, maybe his new status wasnโ€™t the reason we ended things, but the guy on that stage? He was light-years from the Hayden I used to know.

Now he was a total powerhouse, admired by everyone. And me? I was justโ€ฆ me. The girl with no family who left the Johnstons with pretty much nothing.

They say Cinderella rises to the top and gets her prince. I guess I just crashed back down to earth. If he needed a reason to walk away from me, heโ€™d definitely found one.

โ€œNot only is he ridiculously good-looking, but heโ€™s got that power vibe, you know?โ€ Ron whispered, totally starstruck.

I forced a smile, pretending it didnโ€™t sting. Just as I turned to leave, Chadwickโ€™s voice echoed across the hall: โ€œAnd we have one more joyous announcement tonight!โ€

Someone in the crowd yelled, โ€œIs this about an engagement?โ€

I felt my heart drop, pulse racing as Haydenโ€™s eyes flicked to mine from the stage. My breath hitched, and I clenched my hand, nails digging into my palm as I tried not to lose it.
