Chapter 544

โ€œKeira! Wait, youโ€™re going to Houston too?โ€ Yuna beamed, her usual sunshine self. She acted like she hadnโ€™t seen any of the online news about Hayden. But I knew better. Sheโ€™d totally seen itโ€”she just wanted to keep things easy between us, like nothing had changed.

Sure, she was Haydenโ€™s sister, but she had her own take on things. Our mess was ours, and it didnโ€™t interfere with how I felt about her.

โ€œYou should probably start thinking of me as your ex-sister-in-law,โ€ I said with a dry smile. โ€œSince, you knowโ€ฆ your brotherโ€™s marrying someone else.โ€

Her smile froze, her face dropping like she might actually cry.

โ€œNo.โ€ She shook her head, eyes fierce. โ€œYouโ€™ll always be my sister-in-law. I donโ€™t care what Hayden does; that spotโ€™s taken, and itโ€™s yours.โ€

It didnโ€™t exactly erase my heartache, but her words took the edge off, just a little. This girlโ€ฆ all the times Iโ€™d looked out for her? Worth it.

โ€œHayden still loves you, you know,โ€ Yuna suddenly said, lifting her hand like she was swearing an oath. I couldnโ€™t help but think of myself last night, raising my hand to swear in front of Hayden. Gently, I pushed her hand down. โ€œLetโ€™s skip the oath-taking. Just tell me, how are you so sure?โ€

โ€œWell, okay, remember I told you heโ€™s, like, not over you?โ€ She hesitated, then went on, voice soft. โ€œThere was this one time he got super drunk. I went to check on him, just to see if he needed water, andโ€ฆ he was holding your stuffed animal. He even called me by your name.โ€

โ€œHe mumbled something about you waiting for him,โ€ she added, โ€œlike heโ€™d come back and marry you once heโ€ฆ finished whatever he was working on.โ€

My heart twisted. Was she serious? I didnโ€™t know if it was true or if Yuna was just trying to make me feel better.

โ€œAnd get this,โ€ Yuna went on, โ€œthe only reason Iโ€™m even on this flight is because Hayden bought the ticket for me.โ€

I blinked, caught off guard. โ€œWaitโ€”so he knows Iโ€™m on this flight?โ€

โ€œThat, Iโ€™m not sure of,โ€ she said, shrugging. โ€œI kept bugging him about wanting to go to the match for days, and he kept saying no. Then, out of nowhere, he just bought me the ticket today. I think he knew youโ€™d be here and wanted me to tag along so you wouldnโ€™t be alone.โ€

And honestly? It made total sense. What were the odds otherwise? But if he didnโ€™t want me anymore, why bother with all this?

I shook my head, knowing only Hayden could answer that. I glanced at Yuna, switching gears. โ€œSoโ€ฆ snooker, huh? I didnโ€™t know you were a fan.โ€

Her cheeks turned pink as she leaned closer, whispering, โ€œItโ€™s not about snooker. Wade likes it. Heโ€™s going to the match, too.โ€

Ah. So she was here for her own little love story. Thinking about how Wade ghosted her after she confessed, I couldnโ€™t help but ask, โ€œSo, he finally reached out?โ€

She nodded, her voice barely above a murmur. โ€œHe said he canโ€™t return my feelings, but my confession made him really happy. And heโ€™d be okay with being friends.โ€

โ€œAnd you agreed?โ€ I asked, already knowing what sheโ€™d say.

Yunaโ€™s eyes met mine, steady and sure. โ€œI like him too much. If friendship is all heโ€™ll give, Iโ€™ll take it. Just being around him is enough for now.โ€

Poor girl. That kind of one-sided loveโ€”when youโ€™re all in, knowing theyโ€™re notโ€”is brutal, like a slow, constant ache.

โ€œOne day, youโ€™ll regret this,โ€ I warned softly.

โ€œIf I do, Iโ€™ll handle it then. Right now, Iโ€™m just happy to see him, to be around him like before,โ€ Yuna said, looking totally at peace.

Seeing her so wrapped up in her feelings, I decided to let it go. I asked, โ€œSoโ€ฆ did Wade invite you to this match?โ€
