Chapter 544
โKeira! Wait, youโre going to Houston too?โ Yuna beamed, her usual sunshine self. She acted like she hadnโt seen any of the online news about Hayden. But I knew better. Sheโd totally seen itโshe just wanted to keep things easy between us, like nothing had changed.
Sure, she was Haydenโs sister, but she had her own take on things. Our mess was ours, and it didnโt interfere with how I felt about her.
โYou should probably start thinking of me as your ex-sister-in-law,โ I said with a dry smile. โSince, you knowโฆ your brotherโs marrying someone else.โ
Her smile froze, her face dropping like she might actually cry.
โNo.โ She shook her head, eyes fierce. โYouโll always be my sister-in-law. I donโt care what Hayden does; that spotโs taken, and itโs yours.โ
It didnโt exactly erase my heartache, but her words took the edge off, just a little. This girlโฆ all the times Iโd looked out for her? Worth it.
โHayden still loves you, you know,โ Yuna suddenly said, lifting her hand like she was swearing an oath. I couldnโt help but think of myself last night, raising my hand to swear in front of Hayden. Gently, I pushed her hand down. โLetโs skip the oath-taking. Just tell me, how are you so sure?โ
โWell, okay, remember I told you heโs, like, not over you?โ She hesitated, then went on, voice soft. โThere was this one time he got super drunk. I went to check on him, just to see if he needed water, andโฆ he was holding your stuffed animal. He even called me by your name.โ
โHe mumbled something about you waiting for him,โ she added, โlike heโd come back and marry you once heโฆ finished whatever he was working on.โ
My heart twisted. Was she serious? I didnโt know if it was true or if Yuna was just trying to make me feel better.
โAnd get this,โ Yuna went on, โthe only reason Iโm even on this flight is because Hayden bought the ticket for me.โ
I blinked, caught off guard. โWaitโso he knows Iโm on this flight?โ
โThat, Iโm not sure of,โ she said, shrugging. โI kept bugging him about wanting to go to the match for days, and he kept saying no. Then, out of nowhere, he just bought me the ticket today. I think he knew youโd be here and wanted me to tag along so you wouldnโt be alone.โ
And honestly? It made total sense. What were the odds otherwise? But if he didnโt want me anymore, why bother with all this?
I shook my head, knowing only Hayden could answer that. I glanced at Yuna, switching gears. โSoโฆ snooker, huh? I didnโt know you were a fan.โ
Her cheeks turned pink as she leaned closer, whispering, โItโs not about snooker. Wade likes it. Heโs going to the match, too.โ
Ah. So she was here for her own little love story. Thinking about how Wade ghosted her after she confessed, I couldnโt help but ask, โSo, he finally reached out?โ
She nodded, her voice barely above a murmur. โHe said he canโt return my feelings, but my confession made him really happy. And heโd be okay with being friends.โ
โAnd you agreed?โ I asked, already knowing what sheโd say.
Yunaโs eyes met mine, steady and sure. โI like him too much. If friendship is all heโll give, Iโll take it. Just being around him is enough for now.โ
Poor girl. That kind of one-sided loveโwhen youโre all in, knowing theyโre notโis brutal, like a slow, constant ache.
โOne day, youโll regret this,โ I warned softly.
โIf I do, Iโll handle it then. Right now, Iโm just happy to see him, to be around him like before,โ Yuna said, looking totally at peace.
Seeing her so wrapped up in her feelings, I decided to let it go. I asked, โSoโฆ did Wade invite you to this match?โ
