Chapter 548
So, I was being tracked this whole time. But what was his plan? To retaliate against me?
I gripped my phone tighter, staring at the screen. Bruno hadnโt sent anything else, but his silence felt like a threat hanging in the air. After a second of debating, I took a screenshot and sent it to Hayden. If Bruno was coming after me, and Yuna was here too, whatever mess he started could end up hurting her. Hayden needed to know. Even if he didnโt care about me anymore, he couldnโt ignore a risk to his sister.
In that moment, it felt natural to reach out to Hayden. Maybe it was habit, or maybe, deep down, I still trusted himโwhether he wanted me or not.
As soon as I hit send, my phone rang. Hayden. I picked up but stayed quiet, waiting. He broke the silence first. โYou donโt need to worry. Iโll have people watching you.โ
His words hit me with a mix of relief and something warmer, though I tried not to show it. โI donโt need your protection,โ I said, keeping my voice steady. โI just donโt want Yuna getting hurt because sheโs around me. So donโt blame me if something happens to her.โ
He didnโt reply, but he didnโt hang up either. We just sat there, the silence stretching between us. Finally, I asked, โWhyโs Bruno after me? Is it because of Steve?โ
โBruno had called me โSnooker Girlโ when we met, and the only place Iโd ever played was at Steveโs. Considering all the trouble Steveโs been inโand the fact that Iโd come all the way here to check on himโmaybe Bruno thought I was part of that mess too.โ
Hayden let out a quiet, โMmhmm.โ โSteveโs just their excuse. Theyโre targeting you to get to me.โ
I froze as it all clicked together. Then, something Jace had hinted at came back to me. โSoโฆ is it true youโre the one who took down the boss of Quartz Cue?โ
Quartz Cue was more than just a shady cue sports clubโit was practically an underworld front. Taking down their leader was a huge humiliation, and there was no way theyโd let that slide.
Hayden didnโt exactly confirm it. He just said, โYou probably wonโt get to see Steveโs match. You should head home. As soon as possible.โ
What the hell? Was he serious? He was the one who pushed me to come here, and now, barely a day in, heโs telling me to leave?
โWhat kind of game are you playing?โ I snapped, totally confused and more than a little pissed.
โItโs too dangerous now that theyโre watching you,โ he said, voice low and unshakable.
My breath tightened. โSoโฆ because Iโmโฆ or because they think Iโm your girlfriend, right?โ
Hayden was silent, neither confirming nor denying. Finally, he said, โDonโt worry. They wonโt hurt you. Theyโll justโฆ use you to get to me.โ
His words only made me feel more unsettled. โHayden, stop dodging. Iโm asking one more time: are they after me because of what happened with Steve?โ
This time, he didnโt avoid it. โNot entirely.โ
โWhat does that even mean, โnot entirelyโ?โ I was completely lost.
โItโs complicated. Iโll explain later, if I get the chance.โ He paused. โJustโฆ donโt mention any of this to Yuna. Andโฆ let her hang out with whoever she wants.โ
That last part made it obvious he knew all about Yunaโs crush, even though she thought she was keeping it secret. I got it, though. He didnโt want her pulled into any of this. But where did that leave me?
Sure, he said heโd have people watching me, but I wasnโt naive. I knew I was in real danger. Still, all of this started because of Steve. And Steveโs my friend. I canโt blame Hayden for any of it.
Maybe if I hadnโt reached out to him after what happened to Steve, Hayden wouldnโt have gotten mixed up with Quartz Cue, and we wouldnโt be in this mess. But I didnโt regret it. Clearing Steveโs name was worth whatever trouble came my way.
