Chapter 550

Wade stayed quiet, clearly wrestling with somethingโ€”or just unwilling to admit it. I decided to cut to the chase. โ€œWade, did you come into Yunaโ€™s life on purpose?โ€ His head snapped up, panic flashing in his eyes. That look alone was answer enough.

Thinking of how I resembled Narelle, and remembering how Wade had been close by after her passingโ€”even following me into the hospital for Yunaโ€™s surgeryโ€”I couldnโ€™t help but ask, โ€œWere you hoping that by spending time around Yuna, youโ€™d get to see me more often? Toโ€ฆ imagine Narelle through me?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ His denial came out fast, almost desperately. โ€œI havenโ€™t done that. Not even once.โ€

He took a big gulp of coffee, like he was trying to calm himself or bury something. I didnโ€™t say anything, just watched him carefully.

โ€œBelieve me or not,โ€ Wade said, his voice serious, โ€œIโ€™ve never thought of you as Narelle. You may look alike, but I know youโ€™re not the same person.โ€

His honesty reassured meโ€”at least a little. Iโ€™d always worried that Wade might see me as Narelleโ€™s replacement, that heโ€™d never really move on. Now that heโ€™d said otherwise, I believed him. But one thing still didnโ€™t add up.

โ€œStill,โ€ I pressed, โ€œyour presence around Yuna feels way too coincidental.โ€

Wadeโ€™s mouth tightened, and he said nothing. It wasnโ€™t just my imaginationโ€”there was definitely more to his sudden interest in Yuna.

โ€œIf youโ€™re not willing to explain, Iโ€™ll stop you from seeing her,โ€ I said bluntly.

โ€œI mean no harm to Yuna. I justโ€ฆโ€ He faltered again. โ€œI just want to protect her. Quietly, from a distance.โ€

I could see the sincerity in his eyes; he wasnโ€™t putting on a show. But Wade and Yuna barely knew each other, so why this intense urge to protect her?

โ€œWhy do you want to protect her?โ€ I asked, and then a thought struck me, making my heart pound. โ€œWade, donโ€™t tell meโ€ฆโ€

My shock must have been obvious because Wade looked down, as if he knew Iโ€™d figured it out.

โ€œYunaโ€™s heart transplantโ€ฆ the heart she receivedโ€ฆ it was Narelleโ€™s, wasnโ€™t it?โ€

For a moment, it felt like my blood turned to ice. Suddenly, everything clicked. No wonder Wade had stayed by the hospital that day, refusing to leave. He hadnโ€™t been there for meโ€”heโ€™d been there to witness Narelleโ€™s heart beating again, now inside Yuna.

I took a couple of long sips of my coffee, trying to steady myself.

โ€œNarelle is still alive, in a way,โ€ Wade murmured, his eyes misting over. โ€œShe lives on, in Yunaโ€™s world.โ€

The bitterness of the coffee grounded me. โ€œSo, in a sense, youโ€™ve started seeing Yuna as Narelle. Isnโ€™t that it?โ€

Wade hesitated. โ€œNo, I know sheโ€™s not Narelle. She just has Narelleโ€™s heart.โ€

โ€œBut Yunaโ€™s fallen for you, Wade,โ€ I said, pushing a little further. โ€œDo you think that love comes from Yuna herself, or from the heart beating in her chest?โ€

Wade took another sip of coffee. โ€œI donโ€™t know.โ€

I exhaled slowly. โ€œSo how do you plan to respond to her feelings?โ€

He stayed quiet, which told me everything. He was lost, caught between his past and whatever he felt now. Feelings arenโ€™t something anyone else can sort out for you. In the end, this was Wadeโ€™s decision to make.

I watched him, wrestling with emotions he couldnโ€™t seem to name. โ€œWade, even though Yuna has Narelleโ€™s heart, sheโ€™s still Yuna. Sheโ€™s not Narelle, and you need to understand that. Andโ€ฆโ€

I let my words hang there for a moment. โ€œYou have to figure out your own feelings and make a choice, soon. If you donโ€™t, youโ€™re only going to hurt Yuna more deeply.โ€

โ€œI know,โ€ he murmured, looking as lost as ever. โ€œI justโ€ฆ I donโ€™t know what to do right now.โ€

I understood, but there was nothing more I could say. Iโ€™d told him what he needed to hear. The rest was up to him.
