Chapter 550
Wade stayed quiet, clearly wrestling with somethingโor just unwilling to admit it. I decided to cut to the chase. โWade, did you come into Yunaโs life on purpose?โ His head snapped up, panic flashing in his eyes. That look alone was answer enough.
Thinking of how I resembled Narelle, and remembering how Wade had been close by after her passingโeven following me into the hospital for Yunaโs surgeryโI couldnโt help but ask, โWere you hoping that by spending time around Yuna, youโd get to see me more often? Toโฆ imagine Narelle through me?โ
โNo.โ His denial came out fast, almost desperately. โI havenโt done that. Not even once.โ
He took a big gulp of coffee, like he was trying to calm himself or bury something. I didnโt say anything, just watched him carefully.
โBelieve me or not,โ Wade said, his voice serious, โIโve never thought of you as Narelle. You may look alike, but I know youโre not the same person.โ
His honesty reassured meโat least a little. Iโd always worried that Wade might see me as Narelleโs replacement, that heโd never really move on. Now that heโd said otherwise, I believed him. But one thing still didnโt add up.
โStill,โ I pressed, โyour presence around Yuna feels way too coincidental.โ
Wadeโs mouth tightened, and he said nothing. It wasnโt just my imaginationโthere was definitely more to his sudden interest in Yuna.
โIf youโre not willing to explain, Iโll stop you from seeing her,โ I said bluntly.
โI mean no harm to Yuna. I justโฆโ He faltered again. โI just want to protect her. Quietly, from a distance.โ
I could see the sincerity in his eyes; he wasnโt putting on a show. But Wade and Yuna barely knew each other, so why this intense urge to protect her?
โWhy do you want to protect her?โ I asked, and then a thought struck me, making my heart pound. โWade, donโt tell meโฆโ
My shock must have been obvious because Wade looked down, as if he knew Iโd figured it out.
โYunaโs heart transplantโฆ the heart she receivedโฆ it was Narelleโs, wasnโt it?โ
For a moment, it felt like my blood turned to ice. Suddenly, everything clicked. No wonder Wade had stayed by the hospital that day, refusing to leave. He hadnโt been there for meโheโd been there to witness Narelleโs heart beating again, now inside Yuna.
I took a couple of long sips of my coffee, trying to steady myself.
โNarelle is still alive, in a way,โ Wade murmured, his eyes misting over. โShe lives on, in Yunaโs world.โ
The bitterness of the coffee grounded me. โSo, in a sense, youโve started seeing Yuna as Narelle. Isnโt that it?โ
Wade hesitated. โNo, I know sheโs not Narelle. She just has Narelleโs heart.โ
โBut Yunaโs fallen for you, Wade,โ I said, pushing a little further. โDo you think that love comes from Yuna herself, or from the heart beating in her chest?โ
Wade took another sip of coffee. โI donโt know.โ
I exhaled slowly. โSo how do you plan to respond to her feelings?โ
He stayed quiet, which told me everything. He was lost, caught between his past and whatever he felt now. Feelings arenโt something anyone else can sort out for you. In the end, this was Wadeโs decision to make.
I watched him, wrestling with emotions he couldnโt seem to name. โWade, even though Yuna has Narelleโs heart, sheโs still Yuna. Sheโs not Narelle, and you need to understand that. Andโฆโ
I let my words hang there for a moment. โYou have to figure out your own feelings and make a choice, soon. If you donโt, youโre only going to hurt Yuna more deeply.โ
โI know,โ he murmured, looking as lost as ever. โI justโฆ I donโt know what to do right now.โ
I understood, but there was nothing more I could say. Iโd told him what he needed to hear. The rest was up to him.
