Chapter 552

โ€œMiss, could you help me?โ€ A slightly frail, middle-aged voice startled me, and I looked up to see an elderly woman with graying hair and pleading eyes.

โ€œHow can I help you?โ€ I asked politely.

โ€œOh, I was hoping you could buy me a cup of coffee,โ€ she said, catching me off guard and stirring a bit of pity in me. โ€œI havenโ€™t had one in so long because I donโ€™t have any money.โ€

Without thinking, I nodded. โ€œOf course.โ€

โ€œThank you,โ€ she replied, gesturing to the chair across from me. โ€œCould I sit here to drink it?โ€

Since I was already getting her the coffee, letting her sit didnโ€™t seem like a big deal. But just as I was about to agree, Jaceโ€™s voice cut in.

โ€œExcuse me, maโ€™am, would you mind taking a seat elsewhere?โ€

I looked up, startled to see him still there. I thought heโ€™d left. Before I could fully process it, Jace had guided the woman to another table, slipped some cash into her hand, and sent her on her way.

I watched, puzzled, as she walked off without even looking at the coffee counter. Frowning, I looked back at him.

โ€œYou saw that, right?โ€ Jace said, his voice low. โ€œHer real goal wasnโ€™t coffee.โ€

I shook my head, still not quite following. โ€œSoโ€ฆ she was just after the money?โ€

โ€œIf youโ€™d let her sit there and bought her a coffee, in less than ten minutes she wouldโ€™ve started foaming at the mouth and fainted. Then someone would call the police, and as the person who bought her the coffee, youโ€™d be taken in for questioning,โ€ he explained, reminding me a little too much of the mess Steve got pulled into recently.

A chill ran through me, though I hated to believe it. โ€œYou donโ€™t have to assume the worst of people.โ€ Jaceโ€™s brow furrowed, and he pulled out his phone, showing me a video of an elderly woman pulling a scam on a young woman, just like heโ€™d described.

โ€œThese kinds of scams have been on the rise,โ€ he said. โ€œThey target young women, hoping theyโ€™ll be kind enough to fall for it.โ€

The video was hard to argue with. I stayed silent, processing it, and Jace didnโ€™t push me further. Instead, he shifted gears. โ€œDid you get in yesterday?โ€

I answered with a quiet โ€œMm,โ€ my gaze drifting down to his hand, where a thick scar marred his wrist. Thinking back to his car accident, a pang of guilt tugged at me. I couldnโ€™t say it was my fault, but I knew my words that day had hit him hard. His hand was scarredโ€”but what about the rest of him?

Chapter 552

I didnโ€™t know, hadnโ€™t seen him until now, and all I could go by was his face. He looked noticeably thinner, his usual glow missing.

Jace glanced at the coffee cup Wade had left on the table. โ€œWere you meeting someone?โ€

โ€œMm.โ€ Just that one word again. Hearing myself, I realized I sounded exactly like Hayden whenever he answered me with the same curt โ€œMm.โ€

Jace pointed to the empty seat. โ€œMind if I sit?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆMm.โ€

Jace chuckled. โ€œIs that all I get now? Just โ€˜mmโ€™?โ€

As he sat down, I admitted, โ€œI donโ€™t know what to say to you.โ€

I took a moment, looking him over, really seeing how much heโ€™d changed. โ€œAre your injuries fully healed?โ€

A faint light flickered in his eyes as he smiled lightly. โ€œYes. See? Iโ€™m perfectly fine nowโ€ฆโ€ He hesitated before adding, โ€œKeira, the accident was my own fault. It wasnโ€™t because of our conversation. Donโ€™t carry that.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not dwelling on it,โ€ I replied. โ€œAnd besides, if youโ€™re the kind of person whoโ€™d risk his life over something someone said, then that just means I was a fool.โ€

After all, Iโ€™d loved him for ten years. Jaceโ€™s face froze slightly; he understood exactly what I meant.
