Chapter 554
It was clear Jace had a reason for telling me all this. His gaze darkened. โHayden shouldnโt have rushed things with Bruno. He shouldโve checked out who he was dealing with first.โ
I got what he meant, but I couldnโt help the mocking smile that crept onto my face. โSo, what are you saying? That because Brunoโs got connections, I shouldโve just tolerated his harassment? Let him walk all over me?โ
Jace paused, looking a little thrown by the accusation. โThatโs not what I meant.โ
โI donโt think Hayden did anything wrong,โ I shot back. โBruno got exactly what he deserved.โ
For a second, Jace lookedโฆ almost helpless. โIโm just saying there were other ways to handle itโways that wouldnโt have put you in a vulnerable position. Itโs not a criticism of Hayden, just the facts.โ
I took a breath, trying not to assume the worst about his intentions. โWhatโs done is done. Talking about it now wonโt change anything. Brunoโs target is me, and if Hayden hadnโt stepped in, Bruno wouldโve only gotten bolder.โ
Bruno had already caused a scene at the Hart-Johnston event, making it pretty clear he didnโt care about either family.
โAnd now his fans are getting bold too,โ Jace said, flicking his gaze toward the men watching us across the lobby. โYou need to be careful. Staying here alone isnโt safe.โ
Jace had a point. I could see where this was goingโhe wanted me to stay at his hotel. But Hayden had already misunderstood things after I donated blood to Jace, and thatโs what had driven us apart. Staying with him now would only make it worse.
Even though I knew I hadnโt done anything wrong and didnโt owe anyone explanations, the idea of staying with Jace didnโt sit right with me.
โHonestly, with his fans targeting me, I doubt Iโd be safe anywhere,โ I said, letting him know how I really felt.
Jaceโs jaw tightened. โWayne has an apartment here. Itโd be safe for you to stay there.โ
I frowned, but Jace kept going. โI wouldnโt be staying there, if thatโs what youโre worried about.โ
He was trying to reassure me, but even so, the thought of staying there made me uneasy.
โIf you donโt believe me, check with Wayne,โ he added after a pause. โRea, no matter what issues you have with me, or our family, your safety comes first.โ
I didnโt need him to tell me that. Still, I wasnโt thrilled about Wayneโs place either. If it was dangerous here, wouldnโt it be just as bad there? Maybe Hayden was rightโI should just head back. Missing Steveโs game would suck, but if something happened to me, any win he scored wouldnโt mean much.
โIโll think about it,โ I said, giving him a non-answer.
Jace looked at me like he wanted to say more but held back, knowing full well that pushing me wouldnโt work.
I thought back to what Hayden had said. โThis whole thing with Brunoโitโs about Hayden, but also about Steve, isnโt it?โ
Jace nodded slightly, and a chill went through me. โSoโฆ Hayden and Steve could be in danger too?โ
