Chapter 554

It was clear Jace had a reason for telling me all this. His gaze darkened. โ€œHayden shouldnโ€™t have rushed things with Bruno. He shouldโ€™ve checked out who he was dealing with first.โ€

I got what he meant, but I couldnโ€™t help the mocking smile that crept onto my face. โ€œSo, what are you saying? That because Brunoโ€™s got connections, I shouldโ€™ve just tolerated his harassment? Let him walk all over me?โ€

Jace paused, looking a little thrown by the accusation. โ€œThatโ€™s not what I meant.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t think Hayden did anything wrong,โ€ I shot back. โ€œBruno got exactly what he deserved.โ€

For a second, Jace lookedโ€ฆ almost helpless. โ€œIโ€™m just saying there were other ways to handle itโ€”ways that wouldnโ€™t have put you in a vulnerable position. Itโ€™s not a criticism of Hayden, just the facts.โ€

I took a breath, trying not to assume the worst about his intentions. โ€œWhatโ€™s done is done. Talking about it now wonโ€™t change anything. Brunoโ€™s target is me, and if Hayden hadnโ€™t stepped in, Bruno wouldโ€™ve only gotten bolder.โ€

Bruno had already caused a scene at the Hart-Johnston event, making it pretty clear he didnโ€™t care about either family.

โ€œAnd now his fans are getting bold too,โ€ Jace said, flicking his gaze toward the men watching us across the lobby. โ€œYou need to be careful. Staying here alone isnโ€™t safe.โ€

Jace had a point. I could see where this was goingโ€”he wanted me to stay at his hotel. But Hayden had already misunderstood things after I donated blood to Jace, and thatโ€™s what had driven us apart. Staying with him now would only make it worse.

Even though I knew I hadnโ€™t done anything wrong and didnโ€™t owe anyone explanations, the idea of staying with Jace didnโ€™t sit right with me.

โ€œHonestly, with his fans targeting me, I doubt Iโ€™d be safe anywhere,โ€ I said, letting him know how I really felt.

Jaceโ€™s jaw tightened. โ€œWayne has an apartment here. Itโ€™d be safe for you to stay there.โ€

I frowned, but Jace kept going. โ€œI wouldnโ€™t be staying there, if thatโ€™s what youโ€™re worried about.โ€

He was trying to reassure me, but even so, the thought of staying there made me uneasy.

โ€œIf you donโ€™t believe me, check with Wayne,โ€ he added after a pause. โ€œRea, no matter what issues you have with me, or our family, your safety comes first.โ€

I didnโ€™t need him to tell me that. Still, I wasnโ€™t thrilled about Wayneโ€™s place either. If it was dangerous here, wouldnโ€™t it be just as bad there? Maybe Hayden was rightโ€”I should just head back. Missing Steveโ€™s game would suck, but if something happened to me, any win he scored wouldnโ€™t mean much.

โ€œIโ€™ll think about it,โ€ I said, giving him a non-answer.

Jace looked at me like he wanted to say more but held back, knowing full well that pushing me wouldnโ€™t work.

I thought back to what Hayden had said. โ€œThis whole thing with Brunoโ€”itโ€™s about Hayden, but also about Steve, isnโ€™t it?โ€

Jace nodded slightly, and a chill went through me. โ€œSoโ€ฆ Hayden and Steve could be in danger too?โ€
