Chapter 565
Hernan gave a small nod, straightening up. โNot bad. Youโre not totally lost in love. But seriously, why are you so hell-bent on saving Steve? Is he really that big of a deal to you?โ
He was sizing me up, playing it cool while trying to dig into my head, figure out how much I cared.
โNot really,โ I said, keeping it casual.
He laughed like he knew I was bluffing. โYet, you used your one shot to save him.โ
โSteve taught me snooker,โ I said, like it was obvious. โSo, his mess is kinda my mess.โ
Hernan shook his head, unimpressed. โBut why not just use it to get yourself out? Why not ask me to let you go?โ
I shrugged. โCome on, youโve made it clear youโre keeping me here โtil the gameโs over. Even if you did let me go, I wouldnโt make it out the door before you caught me. Besides, I came to see Steve play. Iโm not running.โ
My eyes drifted to his arm, where his sleeve was rolled up, showing a deep, jagged scar.
Hernan noticed me staring and tugged his sleeve higher, like he didnโt care. โItโs still healing,โ he shrugged. โMight get a tattoo over it later, so itโs lessโฆugly.โ
Classic. More worried about how it looked than how he got it.
โWho did that to you?โ I asked, already guessing.
He smirked. โYou donโt know?โ
No point pretending I didnโt. โSo, thatโs why youโre after him?โ
Hernan rolled his sleeve down with a flick. โNot entirely.โ
He paused. โMy history with him? Goes way back, longer than this scar.โ
I blinked, surprised. โYou knew Hayden before?โ
Hernanโs frown came fast. โYou two dated, right? He never told you about his past?โ
That hit harder than I thought it would, and I knew he saw it.
I forced a smile. โNope. He didnโt.โ
Hernan shook his head, like he actually felt bad for me. โGuess he didnโt love you. If he did, heโd have told you all about his โglory days.โโ
My chest twisted. โYeahโฆ if he loved me, heโd be here right nowโfighting for me, kicking down doors, making sure I was okay.โ
I dropped my gaze, trying to swallow the lump in my throat.
Then, I felt a warm hand on my head. Hernan was patting me. โPoor thing,โ he murmured.
I wanted to pull away, but before I could, he let go, his voice soft but heavy. โHaddy might not love you, but some people do.โ
I didnโt get a chance to figure out what he meant, because right then a voice yelled, โDonโt touch her!โ
I whipped around, startled, to see Jace sprinting toward us, two of Hernanโs guards stumbling behind like extras in a bad action movie.
Iโd kinda thought Jace might show, but seeing him here still hit me hard.
Hernan leaned in, voice low and teasing. โLooks like he cares more than Haddy ever did.โ
Love? If Jace loved me, why did he cheat on me?
I donโt believe in love anymore.
Jace reached me, his eyes scanning me like he was checking for damage. Hernanโs guards stepped forward, but a look from Hernan stopped them cold.
Seeing the panic in Jaceโs face, I gave him a quick smile. โIโm fine.โ
He exhaled, grabbing my wrist. โLetโs go.โ
Just as he pulled me forward, another hand clamped down on my other wrist. Hernan smiled, voice smooth but icy. โAnd where do you think youโre taking whatโs mine?โ
