Chapter 567

I shoved Jace hard. โ€œIโ€™m not leaving! Why canโ€™t you just get that through your thick skull? Iโ€™m staying here.โ€

โ€œWhether I end up as wolf chow or get bitten by some stray dog is really none of your business,โ€ I retorted.

Jaceโ€™s face went stormy. โ€œResโ€”โ€

I cut him off, my voice ice cold. โ€œWe donโ€™t have anything anymore. The โ€˜lifeโ€™ on your problem, and I donโ€™t want it to be.โ€

He just stood there, staring at me, his eyes full of raw hurt, like Iโ€™d just kicked his puppy. Finally, he muttered, โ€œThis is your choice. Donโ€™t come crying to me later.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t regret anything I do,โ€ I shot back, my words sharp.

That stung. I saw his jaw tighten, and after a long moment, he turned and started to walk away. But then he stopped, held up a hand, and pointed at Heman like he was about to declare war. โ€œIโ€™m warning you, donโ€™t hurt her. If you do, youโ€™ll regret it.โ€

With that, Jace threw one last glance my way before leaving. I stood there, watching his figure fade, a weird, familiar feeling simmering in my chest.

โ€œHe still loves you,โ€ Heman whispered, as if he knew exactly how to twist the knife.

I looked down, focusing on a random blade of grass. โ€œLove thatโ€™s expired isnโ€™t worth having, no matter how good it used to be.โ€

Herman chuckled. โ€œSmart girl.โ€

I couldnโ€™t tell if he was complimenting me for being level-headed about lost love, or for not flipping out in the middle of whatever messed-up situation heโ€™d put me in.

Honestly? If I had left with Jace, I donโ€™t think he would have made it out of here in one piece.

โ€œCome on, letโ€™s eat,โ€ Heman said, casually, like we were old pals. โ€œI had a Michelin-starred chef whip up something special for you.โ€

I couldnโ€™t help but raise an eyebrow. Seriously? Iโ€™m his hostage, and heโ€™s acting like heโ€™s hosting me at a fancy dinner party.

But, okay, the meal was next level. It even had my favoriteโ€”gnocchi.

So, not just some spur-of-the-moment kidnapping. No, this guy had done his homework.

The thought of someone trailing me, learning my every move without me knowing? Yeah, it gave me the creeps.

โ€œNot hungry?โ€ Hernan asked, setting a plate of gnocchi in front of me.

โ€œIt doesnโ€™t taste right,โ€ I muttered, poking at my side salad instead. I hadnโ€™t even touched the gnocchi yet.

Hernan knew I was avoiding it on purpose, but he didnโ€™t seem to care. After we finished the meal, he casually slid a sleek, new phone across the table.

โ€œHere. For you.โ€

I didnโ€™t even look at it.

He grinned. โ€œThe packagingโ€™s still sealed. Totally untouched.โ€

Seriously? He actually knew why Iโ€™d smashed my last phoneโ€”because he messed with it.

I glanced at the neatly packaged phone and let out a mocking laugh. Yeah, right. With his resources, resealing it would be a breeze.

I didnโ€™t call him out on it, though. Instead, I said, โ€œI donโ€™t need it. Thereโ€™s no point.โ€

He raised an eyebrow. โ€œStill donโ€™t trust me?โ€

โ€œPartly,โ€ I said, shrugging. โ€œBut mostly because I really donโ€™t need it.โ€ I paused, then added, โ€œYou should know by nowโ€ฆ I donโ€™t have a family. No parents. Iโ€™m an orphan. And I donโ€™t have anyone in my life Iโ€™d actually call.โ€

Hermanโ€™s just a bit, but he didnโ€™t say anything. Just gave a small nod. โ€œSuit yourself.โ€

At least he wasnโ€™t the type to push.

I was about to leave, and he called after me. โ€œGet some rest. Iโ€™ve gotta head out for a bit. Iโ€™ll be back for the match the day after tomorrow.โ€

Was this guy actually telling me his schedule?

I ignored him, but he added, โ€œHaddy will be there, too. Day after tomorrow.โ€
