Chapter 567
I shoved Jace hard. โIโm not leaving! Why canโt you just get that through your thick skull? Iโm staying here.โ
โWhether I end up as wolf chow or get bitten by some stray dog is really none of your business,โ I retorted.
Jaceโs face went stormy. โResโโ
I cut him off, my voice ice cold. โWe donโt have anything anymore. The โlifeโ on your problem, and I donโt want it to be.โ
He just stood there, staring at me, his eyes full of raw hurt, like Iโd just kicked his puppy. Finally, he muttered, โThis is your choice. Donโt come crying to me later.โ
โI donโt regret anything I do,โ I shot back, my words sharp.
That stung. I saw his jaw tighten, and after a long moment, he turned and started to walk away. But then he stopped, held up a hand, and pointed at Heman like he was about to declare war. โIโm warning you, donโt hurt her. If you do, youโll regret it.โ
With that, Jace threw one last glance my way before leaving. I stood there, watching his figure fade, a weird, familiar feeling simmering in my chest.
โHe still loves you,โ Heman whispered, as if he knew exactly how to twist the knife.
I looked down, focusing on a random blade of grass. โLove thatโs expired isnโt worth having, no matter how good it used to be.โ
Herman chuckled. โSmart girl.โ
I couldnโt tell if he was complimenting me for being level-headed about lost love, or for not flipping out in the middle of whatever messed-up situation heโd put me in.
Honestly? If I had left with Jace, I donโt think he would have made it out of here in one piece.
โCome on, letโs eat,โ Heman said, casually, like we were old pals. โI had a Michelin-starred chef whip up something special for you.โ
I couldnโt help but raise an eyebrow. Seriously? Iโm his hostage, and heโs acting like heโs hosting me at a fancy dinner party.
But, okay, the meal was next level. It even had my favoriteโgnocchi.
So, not just some spur-of-the-moment kidnapping. No, this guy had done his homework.
The thought of someone trailing me, learning my every move without me knowing? Yeah, it gave me the creeps.
โNot hungry?โ Hernan asked, setting a plate of gnocchi in front of me.
โIt doesnโt taste right,โ I muttered, poking at my side salad instead. I hadnโt even touched the gnocchi yet.
Hernan knew I was avoiding it on purpose, but he didnโt seem to care. After we finished the meal, he casually slid a sleek, new phone across the table.
โHere. For you.โ
I didnโt even look at it.
He grinned. โThe packagingโs still sealed. Totally untouched.โ
Seriously? He actually knew why Iโd smashed my last phoneโbecause he messed with it.
I glanced at the neatly packaged phone and let out a mocking laugh. Yeah, right. With his resources, resealing it would be a breeze.
I didnโt call him out on it, though. Instead, I said, โI donโt need it. Thereโs no point.โ
He raised an eyebrow. โStill donโt trust me?โ
โPartly,โ I said, shrugging. โBut mostly because I really donโt need it.โ I paused, then added, โYou should know by nowโฆ I donโt have a family. No parents. Iโm an orphan. And I donโt have anyone in my life Iโd actually call.โ
Hermanโs just a bit, but he didnโt say anything. Just gave a small nod. โSuit yourself.โ
At least he wasnโt the type to push.
I was about to leave, and he called after me. โGet some rest. Iโve gotta head out for a bit. Iโll be back for the match the day after tomorrow.โ
Was this guy actually telling me his schedule?
I ignored him, but he added, โHaddy will be there, too. Day after tomorrow.โ
