I shook my head lightly. She nodded toward a room on the first floor. “That room’s ready for you. You can rest if you like.”

“Alright. I’ll stay here for a bit.”

Lizzy didn’t press further. She gave me one last concerned look before leaving. And with the silence came a growing unease. I didn’t want to be there anymore, but I couldn’t just leave without a plan—especially not after everything that had happened.

“Ms. Kay… Ms. Young attempted suicide. She’s in the hospital now.”

The words hit me like a punch to the gut. My mind went blank.

“What happened?” It took me several seconds to find my voice again.

“She’s stable, but her mental state isn’t good. As for why… we’re still trying to figure that out.”

I felt like I was drowning. “Are any of her family there? Can I talk to someone?”

“Sure, I’ll see if I can put her mom on the line.”

A moment later, an older woman’s voice came on the line. It was low, careful. “Hello?”
