Chapter 608

Bruno kicked back in his chair, flashing that smug demeanor. It was obvious he already had something planned; the whole thing was just him messing with me, trying to get under his skin. Hayden, as usual, didnโ€™t flinch. โ€œHowever you wanna settle it,โ€ he said.

I could see it nowโ€”Hayden was the kind of guy who never cracked. No matter how much Herman tried to mess with him, he just stayed cool, like nothing could faze him. Bruno twirled a colorful snooker ball in his fingers. โ€œWeโ€™re enemies now, right?โ€ he said, looking at Hayden.

Hayden didnโ€™t reply. Brunoโ€™s gaze drifted over to me.

โ€œHow about you and I play a few rounds?โ€ Bruno suggested, his grin widening. โ€œIf you win, I grant your condition. That includes letting Hayden off the hook.โ€

I knew what he was up to. Ever since the first time he saw me, heโ€™d been obsessed with playing against me. This guy was relentless. But seriously, what was it about me? Iโ€™d never faced him, never humiliated anyone, never played to show off. So why was he so hell-bent on getting a game?

I couldnโ€™t help itโ€”I had to ask. โ€œWhy me?โ€

โ€œWhy not?โ€ Bruno shot back, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. โ€œYouโ€™ve got something about you. Played a perfect game just a few days ago in the tournament, right?โ€

So now it was on. A challenge. I knew if I refused, heโ€™d make me play anyway. I might as well agree, but I wasnโ€™t going to make it easy for him. I locked eyes with him. โ€œIf I win, youโ€™ll really let go of this grudge?โ€

I left Hayden out of it. The way he acted toward meโ€”so distant and indifferentโ€”made me think, Thereโ€™s no way Iโ€™m begging Bruno for him. Not like that.

โ€œOf course,โ€ Bruno said, grinning wider. โ€œWhen I make a promise, I keep it.โ€ Then he threw in a twist. โ€œBut if you lose? What do you think should happen?โ€

I clenched my jaw. โ€œWhatever you want.โ€

Clap, clap. Bruno applauded. โ€œBold. No wonder you got so many guys wrapped around your finger.โ€ He waved a hand, and his men set up a pool table.

โ€œWeโ€™re playing here?โ€ I frowned.

โ€œWhat, donโ€™t like it?โ€ Bruno smirked.

โ€œIt reeks here. The vibeโ€™s awful. Itโ€™ll mess with my mood, and you know that messes with my game,โ€ I shot back, making sure he knew I wasnโ€™t impressed.

I could get away with being demanding because Bruno had to answer to someone higher up. Whoever was pulling the strings wanted me alive, which meant Bruno couldnโ€™t push things too far. Sometimes, acting like youโ€™re important works.

โ€œFine,โ€ Bruno said, standing up and motioning for us to follow. โ€œWeโ€™ll go to my pool hall.โ€

As he passed Jace, he stopped, eyeing the wound on his arm. โ€œGet a doctor to patch him up. All that bloodโ€™s gonna ruin the mood.โ€ As if this wasnโ€™t all his fault in the first place.

Jace stayed silent, his face pale from the pain. Bruno wasnโ€™t wrongโ€”the wound was bad; I couldnโ€™t even look at it directly. Instead, I focused on Jaceโ€™s pale face. โ€œCan you hold on? Maybe we should get you to a hospital.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll be fine. Iโ€™ll wait for you,โ€ Jace said, voice strained.

I helped him toward the door, with Hayden and Yara following behind. When we reached Brunoโ€™s pool hall, I had to admitโ€”it was impressive. The pool table was made of rare material, and even the cue sticks had tips made of the same stuff. It was clearโ€”Brunoโ€™s thing with snooker wasnโ€™t just a hobby.
