Chapter 621

If Jace actually lost his arm over this, Iโ€™d owe him big timeโ€”like, a lifetime of โ€œI owe yous.โ€ But honestly, I didnโ€™t want to get tangled up with him any further. All I could do was try to talk some sense into him.

โ€œItโ€™s not that bad,โ€ he muttered, clearly lying through his teeth. His face was so pale. A few more treatments, and Iโ€™ll be good as new.

Uh-huh. Sure. But since he looked like he was about to pass out, I held back my argument.

Instead, he glanced at me and said, โ€œNow that youโ€™re back, I feel like Iโ€™ll heal faster.โ€

I understood the meaning behind his words, but he quickly switched gears as if it were nothing. โ€œSteveโ€™s been asking about you, by the way. If I hadnโ€™t stopped him, he probably wouldโ€™ve filed a missing personโ€™s report.โ€

Cutting everyone off for a few days had definitely caused a ripple effect.

โ€œIs he coming by today?โ€ I asked, rolling with the topic change.

โ€œDonโ€™t know. Let me check.โ€ He started to grab his phone, but the moment he moved, pain shot across his face, and he froze like a glitching robot.

Without thinking, I grabbed his bandaged arm to steady him. โ€œRelax, you donโ€™t need to call him. Iโ€™m back. Heโ€™ll find me sooner or later.โ€

Jace didnโ€™t say anything. Maybe it was the painโ€”or maybe it was something else. I couldnโ€™t tell.

โ€œWant me to call the doctor?โ€ I asked.

He shook his head and licked his dry lips. โ€œJustโ€ฆ get me some water.โ€

I handed him the glass, and he took a couple of slow sips. Some of the tension on his face eased as the pain dulled.

โ€œHas Wayne come to see you recently?โ€ I asked, breaking the silence.

โ€œTwice.โ€

โ€œI ran into him yesterday,โ€ I said, watching his reaction. โ€œAt the restaurant,โ€ I added.

โ€œHmm.โ€ That was all he said.

I let out a small laugh. โ€œWayne and I sure have a knack for running into each other.โ€

Jace wasnโ€™t buying it. โ€œRea, if youโ€™ve got something to say, just spit it out.โ€

I hesitated, then glanced at his injured arm. โ€œDid you know Wayne can draw?โ€

His eyebrows knit together. โ€œWhat? No. Iโ€™ve never seen him do that.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s crazy goodโ€”like, better-than-most-people good. His paintings are so lifelike, they might as well be photos,โ€ I said, hyping it up just a little.

But seriously, Wayne was insanely talented.

Jace didnโ€™t say a word, so I kept going. โ€œNow, imagine someone filling an entire room with drawings of you. Every version of you from when you were ten to twenty-four. What kind of feelings do you think it takes to do something like that?โ€

The realization hit him hard, and it showed. โ€œRea, youโ€™re notโ€ฆโ€

โ€œI want to try opening my heart to someone else,โ€ I said, cutting him off.

Jace froze. His hand trembled, and the glass tipped, spilling water all over the floor.

โ€œNo,โ€ he said sharply, his tone somewhere between shocked and furious. โ€œI donโ€™t agree with this.โ€

Compared to his total meltdown, I stayed calm. โ€œWayneโ€™s love for me runs deeper and longer than yours ever didโ€ฆโ€

โ€œRea, is this because of Hayden? Are you heartbroken? Grieving? There are other ways to deal with itโ€”you donโ€™t have to justโ€ฆ throw yourself at Wayne like this,โ€ he stammered.

โ€œWeโ€™ve known each other just as long as you and I have. This isnโ€™t some random, impulsive decision,โ€ I said softly.

His tone hardened. โ€œNo. Absolutely not. Rea, you canโ€™t be with Wayne.โ€

I didnโ€™t bother answering. But Jace? He looked like he was unraveling by the second. He sat there clutching the glass like it was the only thing tethering him to reality, his knuckles white as he debated whether to put it down or hold on.

โ€œThis isnโ€™t about me, is it?โ€ he blurted, his words tumbling out. โ€œYou blame me for what happened to Hayden, donโ€™t you? If youโ€™re mad, just say itโ€”yell at me, curse me, do whatever you need to. But donโ€™tโ€”โ€ His voice cracked, lower this time. โ€œDonโ€™t punish yourself like this. Donโ€™tโ€ฆโ€

Jace never rambled. Ever. And yet, here he was, unraveling in real time. Heโ€™d been the one to tip me off about the mastermind behind everything. He mustโ€™ve known it was Wayne all along.

I kept my voice low but sharp. โ€œYouโ€™ve always known the mastermind, havenโ€™t you?โ€

Chapter 622

Jaceโ€™s gaze darkened, and I gave him a faint smile. โ€œEven if you donโ€™t say it, I already know who it is.โ€

โ€œAnd who do you think it is?โ€ he asked, calm but clearly trying to gauge my reaction.

I met his eyes and didnโ€™t answer.

Jace shifted, sitting up straighterโ€”like he was actually about to climb out of bed, injury be damned. โ€œYou donโ€™t think itโ€™s Wayne, do you? Are you seriously planning to be with him just to get back at me orโ€ฆ avenge Hayden?โ€

Of course, after years of dating me, he could still read my mind like a book.

โ€œIf itโ€™s not him, then tell me who it is,โ€ I shot back.

โ€œRea, itโ€™s not Wayne. How could you even think that? But honestlyโ€ฆโ€ Jace said, shifting his stance. โ€œI donโ€™t know who it is, either. Back then, I justโ€ฆ guessed there had to be someone pulling the strings.โ€

I stayed calm, my tone light but deliberate. โ€œIf itโ€™s not him, even better. At least I wonโ€™t feel any guilt about being with him.โ€

Jace froze. โ€œReaโ€ฆโ€

I exhaled slowly. โ€œJace, weโ€™ve known each other for ten years. We were together for four. Then I fell in love with Hayden.

โ€œIโ€™ve been through it allโ€”the joy of unrequited love turning mutual and the rush of love at first sight. But honestly? Love is exhausting. Iโ€™m tired of being the one who loves more.

โ€œI want to try being with someone who loves me more this time.โ€

Jaceโ€™s expression hardened. โ€œFine,โ€ he said, his voice sharp. โ€œIf thatโ€™s what you want, go aheadโ€”but it absolutely cannot be Wayne.โ€

I chuckled softly. โ€œAnd why not? Give me one good reason.โ€

He stiffened, like someone had just electrocuted him. โ€œYou already know the reason, Rea. Do you really need me to say it?

โ€œHeโ€™s my brother. Youโ€™re my ex-fiancรฉe. If you two get together, what does that make me? What will people think of my family?

โ€œHow am I supposed to face youโ€”or myself?โ€

I let the silence hang for two beats, meeting his gaze head-on. โ€œSo, what? Iโ€™m supposed to sacrifice my happiness just to protect your pride and reputation?โ€

That shut him up.

I watched him for a moment, then softened my tone. โ€œIโ€™m telling you this now so you have time to process it. Thatโ€™s all.โ€

Jaceโ€™s voice cracked as he spoke. โ€œThen canโ€™t you pity me, just this once? Donโ€™t be with him. Anyone else would be fine, but not Wayne.โ€

โ€œSomeone else?โ€ I let out a quiet laugh. โ€œAlright then tell me. Who should I choose?โ€

Silence. Of course, he had nothing.

I glanced at his injured arm before standing. โ€œTake care of yourself, Jace. Focus on healing.โ€

โ€œRea.โ€ His voice stopped me in my tracks. I felt his hand grab my wrist just as I turned to leave. โ€œWhat about me? Could youโ€ฆ reconsider me?โ€

His eyes locked onto mine. โ€œI admit I made a lot of mistakes. Iโ€™ve paid for them, but you know I still love you. I always have. Iโ€™d give my life for you, Rea.โ€

He paused, his voice dipping lower, almost vulnerable. โ€œYou said you want someone who loves you more. Then let me be that person. You donโ€™t even have to love me back. You can keep loving Hayden if thatโ€™s what you need.โ€

The humility in his voice was startling. This wasnโ€™t the Jace I knewโ€”heโ€™d stripped away every last bit of pride.

โ€œRea,โ€ he whispered, pressing his forehead to the back of my hand, โ€œjust give me one more chance, pleaseโ€ฆ Iโ€™m begging you.โ€

I looked out the window instead of at him. โ€œBut youโ€™re not exciting to me anymore.โ€

The words hit like a sledgehammer. Harsh? Maybe. Cruel? Definitely. But it was the truth. Wasnโ€™t it excitement that made him cheat with Tanya behind my back? A craving for something new? A thrill?

I didnโ€™t wait to see his reaction. I only felt his grip on my wrist slowly loosen until his hand fell away entirely.

I didnโ€™t say anything else. As I turned to leave, I glanced back at Jace. He was slumped in the chair, looking completely wrecked, like all the fight had drained out of him.

Leaving the hospital behind, I headed back to the office. Maybe it was because Iโ€™d been gone so longโ€”or maybe it was just meโ€”but something feltโ€ฆ off. The place seemed heavier, like someone had hit the dimmer switch on the usual buzz.

When I stepped into my office, everything was exactly as Iโ€™d left it: neat, spotless, like a productivity shrine. Someone had clearly been keeping it all together in my absence.

โ€œMs. Kay, your vacationโ€™s over?โ€

I glanced up to see one of the new hires poking her head in. Fresh out of college, she still had that wide-eyed look, like every thought was written all over her face.

โ€œYeah,โ€ I said with a smirk. โ€œMiss me already?โ€
