Chapter 623

โ€œObviously! Missed you treating us to lunch, too,โ€ she shot back, bold as anything.

โ€œDone. Let everyone knowโ€”dinnerโ€™s on me tonight at SeaView Dining,โ€ I said, not even pausing to think.

โ€œWaitโ€”seriously?โ€ Her eyes went wide. Cute.

โ€œDead serious,โ€ I said, giving her a nod.

โ€œYay!โ€ she squealed, doing a little bounce before running off.

I couldnโ€™t help but smile. Somehow, her energy seemed to lift the whole office. The vibe felt lighter already.

After dropping my bag on my desk and taking a quick look around, I decided to swing by Ronโ€™s office.

โ€œCome in!โ€

I opened the door to find Ron practically buried under a mountain of paperwork. He didnโ€™t even glance up to see who had entered.

I walked closer, noticing the stacks of documentsโ€”most of them from my department.

It didnโ€™t take a genius to figure out what had been going on. My peaceful break? Yeah, that had been courtesy of Ronโ€™s hard work.

โ€œYouโ€™ve been running yourself ragged. Why not hire someone else to help out?โ€ I asked.

Ron froze mid-signature, his pen hovering over the paper. When he looked up, his surprise was clear.

For a second, he just stared, then he shot to his feet. โ€œOh my god, youโ€™re back! I thought youโ€”โ€

He cut himself off, but I knew what he meant. He didnโ€™t think Iโ€™d come back.

If he really thought that, then why hadnโ€™t he hired anyone? Was he waiting for me to quit officially?

โ€œSo, are you letting me back, orโ€ฆ?โ€ I asked, getting straight to the point.

โ€œOf course! What else would you do? Quit? No chance. I wouldnโ€™t approve it anyway,โ€ he said, flashing a sly grin. โ€œBesides, your contract says you canโ€™t resign until youโ€™ve worked at least a year.โ€

Waitโ€”what? That was in the contract? How did I miss that?

โ€œSounds a little predatory,โ€ I teased.

โ€œBut you signed it,โ€ Ron shot back with a playful smirk. โ€œSo, technically, you agreed to be โ€˜predated.โ€™โ€

He didnโ€™t look the least bit sad. Maybe he didnโ€™t know about Haydenโ€™s passing. If he didnโ€™t, that was probably for the best. Knowing wouldnโ€™t do anything but add to the grief.

Yara once told me Hayden had confided in her. He said the only family he had was Yuna, and if anything ever happened to him, she was to keep it from his sister. No need to tell anyone else eitherโ€”because, in his words, no one would care.

It had been over a month since he died. Surely Ron noticed heโ€™d been gone this whole time. But now, standing here, he hadnโ€™t even mentioned him.

Maybe Hayden was right. No one really cared about anyone.

Then Ron frowned, like something had just clicked. โ€œWaitโ€”youโ€™re back, but whereโ€™s Hayden? Holed up in that studio of his again?โ€

I stared at him, my throat tightening. Finally, I said, โ€œHeโ€™s not coming back. Not ever.โ€

The smile froze on Ronโ€™s face, his lips trembling. โ€œWโ€”What do you mean? Heโ€™s leaving? But this is his company. He wouldnโ€™t justโ€”โ€

And there it was, unspoken until now. This was Haydenโ€™s company. The favoritism, the special treatmentโ€”it all made sense.

โ€œMr. Shane,โ€ I said, keeping my voice steady, โ€œHaydenโ€™s gone. He passed away over a month ago.โ€

The words hit like a thunderclap, and Ron justโ€ฆ froze.
