Chapter 626
โRealโ Wayneโs voice sounded as warm as ever, but now it had a sharp edge, like a thorn pressing into my chest. How could someone who seemed so harmless hide such ruthless obsession? Heโd crushed anyone in his path without a second thought.
I swallowed back the bitterness and got straight to the point. I need your help.
โMm, what is it?โ His tone wasnโt the same anymore. Running Riverweave Corp and Jaceโs place had clearly gone to his head. Power didnโt just change a personโs mindsetโit bled into their every move.
โMy former colleague, Demi Youngโฆ Sheโs working in your company. Sheโs a good friend, but something happened, and she quit. I canโt get in touch with her. I need you to help me find her.โ
โDemi Young?โ Wayne echoed, his tone thoughtful before he agreed. โAlright.โ
โThanks,โ I said, keeping my voice calm and polite, the way I always did with him.
โRea,โ he said softly, my name hanging in the air before he continued, โCan we meet in person?โ
โSure. When?โ I answered without missing a beat.
โWhenever it works for you.โ Wayneโs voice was steady, just like I remembered. Heโd always been like thisโletting me call the shots. He never pushed his preferences or agenda, always putting me first.
Looking back, I realized his love had always been there in the little things. But Iโd been too wrapped up in Jace to see it.
โTomorrow evening, then,โ I said, my tone firm. โYou can pick me up, and weโll head to your place. Itโs been a while since I visited Lindey and Matthew.โ
There was a pause on the other end. Wayne didnโt expect that.
โโฆAlright,โ he said eventually. โIโll let my parents know.โ
After the call ended, I toyed with the bell on my wrist, its soft chime breaking the silence. โHayden,โ I murmured, โyou told me to stay away from the Johnstonsโฆ but I might not listen this time.โ
Chapter 420
That night, I joined my department for a dinner party. The mood was light, everyone laughing and taking turns offering me drinks.
At some point during dinner, someone asked why Hayden wasnโt coming to the office anymore. Iโd told Ron about Haydenโs passing, but no one else. So I kept it simple. โHe took an overseas job. He wonโt be back anytime soon.โ
Saying it out loud brought that familiar ache, sharp and unrelenting. I downed another drink to dull it.
By the end of the night, Iโd had too much. Ron ended up taking me home, his voice cutting through my haze as he muttered, โIf Hayden were here, heโd probably chew you out for being so reckless.โ
But he wasnโt here. My Hayden. He was gone.
The next morning, my phone rang, jolting me awake. It was Ron.
โFeeling better after last night?โ he teased.
โYeah, thanks for getting me home,โ I said. Iโd drunk a lot, but I wasnโt totally out of it.
โOh, so you do remember it was me? Guess you werenโt as far gone as you looked. So, what did I say to you?โ His tone was mischievous, clearly fishing for something.
His question tickled at the edge of my memory, but whatever it was, it stayed frustratingly out of reach.
โWhat did you say?โ I asked, curiosity getting the better of me.
โI saidโฆ plenty of things,โ he replied, annoyingly vague.
Classic Ron. And honestly, if it was that important, I wouldโve remembered, right? No point digging into it.
โSo, why the early call? Donโt tell me youโre just checking if Iโm sober. If youโve got work for me, spillโIโm ready to head in,โ I said, glancing at the clock. Not even nine.
โNope, no work. If youโre still feeling crappy, take another day off. Honestly, whether youโre here or not doesnโt make much of a difference,โ he joked, though there was a faint bite in his words.
But I knew Ron too well to take him at face value. He was Haydenโs guy through and through, and like Hayden, heโd always given me free rein. If he was calling, there had to be a reasonโit wasnโt just to annoy me.
I thought back to yesterday, to something heโd said in the office. โDidnโt you have something for me?โ
โNope, nothing,โ he said, so casually it threw me off.
I frowned. Yesterday, heโd seemed serious, not at all like he was joking. And now? A total 180.
Still, I let it go. โIf thereโs nothing, fine.โ
โThereโs nothing, I swear. Go back to sleep,โ he said, then hung up.
