Chapter 626

โ€œRealโ€ Wayneโ€™s voice sounded as warm as ever, but now it had a sharp edge, like a thorn pressing into my chest. How could someone who seemed so harmless hide such ruthless obsession? Heโ€™d crushed anyone in his path without a second thought.

I swallowed back the bitterness and got straight to the point. I need your help.

โ€œMm, what is it?โ€ His tone wasnโ€™t the same anymore. Running Riverweave Corp and Jaceโ€™s place had clearly gone to his head. Power didnโ€™t just change a personโ€™s mindsetโ€”it bled into their every move.

โ€œMy former colleague, Demi Youngโ€ฆ Sheโ€™s working in your company. Sheโ€™s a good friend, but something happened, and she quit. I canโ€™t get in touch with her. I need you to help me find her.โ€

โ€œDemi Young?โ€ Wayne echoed, his tone thoughtful before he agreed. โ€œAlright.โ€

โ€œThanks,โ€ I said, keeping my voice calm and polite, the way I always did with him.

โ€œRea,โ€ he said softly, my name hanging in the air before he continued, โ€œCan we meet in person?โ€

โ€œSure. When?โ€ I answered without missing a beat.

โ€œWhenever it works for you.โ€ Wayneโ€™s voice was steady, just like I remembered. Heโ€™d always been like thisโ€”letting me call the shots. He never pushed his preferences or agenda, always putting me first.

Looking back, I realized his love had always been there in the little things. But Iโ€™d been too wrapped up in Jace to see it.

โ€œTomorrow evening, then,โ€ I said, my tone firm. โ€œYou can pick me up, and weโ€™ll head to your place. Itโ€™s been a while since I visited Lindey and Matthew.โ€

There was a pause on the other end. Wayne didnโ€™t expect that.

โ€œโ€ฆAlright,โ€ he said eventually. โ€œIโ€™ll let my parents know.โ€

After the call ended, I toyed with the bell on my wrist, its soft chime breaking the silence. โ€œHayden,โ€ I murmured, โ€œyou told me to stay away from the Johnstonsโ€ฆ but I might not listen this time.โ€

Chapter 420

That night, I joined my department for a dinner party. The mood was light, everyone laughing and taking turns offering me drinks.

At some point during dinner, someone asked why Hayden wasnโ€™t coming to the office anymore. Iโ€™d told Ron about Haydenโ€™s passing, but no one else. So I kept it simple. โ€œHe took an overseas job. He wonโ€™t be back anytime soon.โ€

Saying it out loud brought that familiar ache, sharp and unrelenting. I downed another drink to dull it.

By the end of the night, Iโ€™d had too much. Ron ended up taking me home, his voice cutting through my haze as he muttered, โ€œIf Hayden were here, heโ€™d probably chew you out for being so reckless.โ€

But he wasnโ€™t here. My Hayden. He was gone.

The next morning, my phone rang, jolting me awake. It was Ron.

โ€œFeeling better after last night?โ€ he teased.

โ€œYeah, thanks for getting me home,โ€ I said. Iโ€™d drunk a lot, but I wasnโ€™t totally out of it.

โ€œOh, so you do remember it was me? Guess you werenโ€™t as far gone as you looked. So, what did I say to you?โ€ His tone was mischievous, clearly fishing for something.

His question tickled at the edge of my memory, but whatever it was, it stayed frustratingly out of reach.

โ€œWhat did you say?โ€ I asked, curiosity getting the better of me.

โ€œI saidโ€ฆ plenty of things,โ€ he replied, annoyingly vague.

Classic Ron. And honestly, if it was that important, I wouldโ€™ve remembered, right? No point digging into it.

โ€œSo, why the early call? Donโ€™t tell me youโ€™re just checking if Iโ€™m sober. If youโ€™ve got work for me, spillโ€”Iโ€™m ready to head in,โ€ I said, glancing at the clock. Not even nine.

โ€œNope, no work. If youโ€™re still feeling crappy, take another day off. Honestly, whether youโ€™re here or not doesnโ€™t make much of a difference,โ€ he joked, though there was a faint bite in his words.

But I knew Ron too well to take him at face value. He was Haydenโ€™s guy through and through, and like Hayden, heโ€™d always given me free rein. If he was calling, there had to be a reasonโ€”it wasnโ€™t just to annoy me.

I thought back to yesterday, to something heโ€™d said in the office. โ€œDidnโ€™t you have something for me?โ€

โ€œNope, nothing,โ€ he said, so casually it threw me off.

I frowned. Yesterday, heโ€™d seemed serious, not at all like he was joking. And now? A total 180.

Still, I let it go. โ€œIf thereโ€™s nothing, fine.โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s nothing, I swear. Go back to sleep,โ€ he said, then hung up.
