Chapter 645

The thought hit me out of nowhere. โ€œI want a child like that.โ€

I drove away from Desmondโ€™s parentsโ€™ place and back to work. On the way, I tried calling Demiโ€”straight to voicemail. Wayneโ€™s info had to be solid, so if she wasnโ€™t picking up, it was because she was avoiding me. Frustrated, I shot her a text:

[Demi, if you still consider me a friend, pick up my call.]

Nothing. No reply. Not even a read receipt. Just silence.

Guess Iโ€™d have to track her down myself.

Technically, I was still on the clock, but my boss wasnโ€™t exactly strict. Without hesitation, I booked a flight to Lindale. Just as I confirmed the ticket, Ron walked in, water glass in hand.

โ€œYouโ€™ve been way too chill lately,โ€ he said, plopping into the chair across from me.

I didnโ€™t need a crystal ball to know what he meant. Heโ€™d probably seen the latest headlines about me. โ€œWhat? Here to pile on more work?โ€ I deadpanned.

โ€œObviously,โ€ he shot back. โ€œIf I donโ€™t, youโ€™ll just cause more chaos. And if things go south again, I swear Hayden will rise from the grave to haunt me.โ€

โ€œHe wouldnโ€™t,โ€ I said lightly, but my mind drifted. The amusement park, the lights, that feeling that wouldnโ€™t leave meโ€”Hayden wasnโ€™t dead. He was out there, pulling strings. I could feel it.

โ€œDoesnโ€™t matter if he would or not,โ€ Ron continued. โ€œYouโ€™re following company policies now, starting today. Screw up, and thereโ€™ll be consequences.โ€

โ€œFines? Go for it,โ€ I shrugged. Money wasnโ€™t exactly my problem. Lena always joked I was a โ€œthree-noโ€ personโ€”no parents, no kids, no husband. If I died tomorrow, my fortune would just vanish into thin air.

Might as well spend it while I was alive, right?

โ€œBe serious,โ€ Ron snapped.

โ€œI am,โ€ I nodded. โ€œFine me, Iโ€™ll pay. No complaints. But heads upโ€”I need tomorrow off. And the next day.โ€

โ€œDenied!โ€ he barked, trying to play boss for once.

I didnโ€™t flinch. I just held up my phone with the flight confirmation on display. โ€œTickets are booked, so you can either cover for me or I quit. Your choice.โ€

Ron froze. After a pause, he sighed. โ€œYouโ€™re absolutely insane. Fearless. Completely out of control.โ€

โ€œObviously, Iโ€™ve got more money than I can burn, and Iโ€™m not here for the paycheck,โ€ I said with a smug grin, fully aware that a line like that could make anyone want to flip a desk. But hey, I wasnโ€™t wrong.

I wasnโ€™t working here for the money. This place mattered to me because it had been Haydenโ€™sโ€”still buzzing with memories of us.

โ€œFine,โ€ Ron threw up his hands. โ€œYou win. But this is the last time. Donโ€™t even think about making this a habit.โ€ He shook his head as he muttered, โ€œEven if my grandma showed up, she wouldnโ€™t get this kind of treatment.โ€

That made me laugh. โ€œThanks, grandson. Youโ€™re making Grandma so proud right now.โ€

โ€œYouโ€”โ€

Then we both cracked up, and for the first time in forever, I felt like I was genuinely laughing.

Then Ronโ€™s tone shifted. He traced the rim of his glass awkwardly before blurting out, โ€œBy the wayโ€ฆ last nightโ€ฆ did you reallyโ€”uh, you know?โ€

I raised a brow, pretending not to follow. โ€œReally what?โ€

He cleared his throat. โ€œThe wholeโ€ฆ hotel thing. You werenโ€™t seriously hanging out with those guys, right? Keira, if youโ€™re going to find someone, at least aim higher.โ€

The way he squirmed gave him awayโ€”someone had definitely put him up to this.

I tilted my head. โ€œWow, you seem super invested in my love life. Any reason why?โ€

He avoided my gaze and gulped his water like it was his only lifeline.

I leaned in, studying him. โ€œHold up. Donโ€™t tell meโ€ฆโ€ I paused for dramatic effect. โ€œYouโ€™re into me too, huh?โ€

And that was it.

PFFTโ€”

Ron choked, sputtering water straight onto my face.
