Chapter 654
โWhose secret?โ I asked, keeping my tone casual.
Demi glanced at me, her lips parting like she wanted to spill, but something held her back. Then I remembered what sheโd said about it possibly costing her life. Raising a hand, I stopped her. โYou donโt have to tell me. Iโll figure it out myself.โ
โKeira, donโt. You donโt need to dig into this, and you definitely donโt need to get involved in my mess anymore,โ she said, her voice tinged with guilt. โYouโve already done enoughโhelping me pay off all that debt. Iโm grateful, okay? Thatโs enough.โ
I studied her, my mind running wild with guesses about the โsecretโ she was hiding.
โIโll pay you back. Bit by bit,โ she said quietly, avoiding my gaze.
We both knew the truth. With the way she was earning now, it would take her a decadeโprobably longerโto pay back the $500,000 Iโd lent her.
โYou donโt have to worry about that,โ I said firmly. โAll I care about is you being safe and okay.โ
But Demi just shook her head. She was set on repaying me. I didnโt argue. Everyone has their principles, and I wasnโt about to trample on hers.
Since Demi refused to come back with me, I focused on making sure sheโd be in a better place. I rented her a small studio apartment, paying the rent three years in advance. On top of that, I pulled some strings with Ron and got her a job at a local company. At least this way, she wouldnโt have to grind herself into the ground just to survive.
Once everything was squared away, I called Lena to set up a meeting with her and Nate.
โSure, Iโll let him know,โ Lena said. โOnce we lock down a time and place, Iโll send it to you.โ
She said it so casually, like she was inviting me and Nate out instead of the other way around. I didnโt mind, though, and just went along with it.
But Lena didnโt get back to me for a while. What I didnโt realize was that she had something unexpected going on at her end.
Nateโs sudden announcement about visiting Lenaโs parents had her totally thrown.
โYou want to meet my parents because of what happened with my uncle yesterday?โ she asked, trying to make sense of it.
โNope,โ Nate said, pulling her closer. โI planned this from the start. Weโve just gone official, sure, but Iโve been in love with you way before that.โ
Lena knew he meant itโshe could feel itโbut still, this felt way too fast. โDo you even get what meeting my parents means?โ
He laced his fingers with hers and nodded, dead serious. โOf course I do.โ
Her breath caught. โThink about it. When itโs just us, itโs us. But bringing my parents into it? Thatโs a whole other level.โ

Nate spun her to face him, his eyes locked on hers. โLena, I want to marry you. Itโs not just you I needโitโs their blessing too.โ
Her chest tightened, warmth spilling through her. But still, she had to ask, โAre you sure Iโm the one you want to spend forever with?โ
The question hung there, heavy and surreal, like stepping into a dream you werenโt sure you were ready for.
โYes,โ he said. โFrom the first moment I saw you, I knew it was you.โ He leaned in, brushing his nose against hers, all soft and sweet.
How could she say no to that? This was Nate. Not just the guy she lovedโhe was her whole childhood, her biggest โwhat if,โ turned real.
Marrying him wasnโt just a new idea; it was the idea, the one sheโd been dreaming about since the first time her heart skipped a beat for him.
โAlright,โ she said. โIโll let my parents know, so theyโre ready for you.โ
Lena texted me later, saying weโd have to reschedule. Apparently, she and Nate were meeting her parentsโdefinitely a big-deal kind of thing. I wasnโt pressed. Waiting was no biggie.
By evening, Iโd swapped my casuals for something sleek and headed to DracoLux, the Drago familyโs infamous nightclub. The name screamed bougie drama, and yeah, DracoLux was basically the crown jewel of Seavora nightlife. Not just for rich folksโfor the rich folks. Like, โI summer in Monacoโ vibes.
