Chapter 654

โ€œWhose secret?โ€ I asked, keeping my tone casual.

Demi glanced at me, her lips parting like she wanted to spill, but something held her back. Then I remembered what sheโ€™d said about it possibly costing her life. Raising a hand, I stopped her. โ€œYou donโ€™t have to tell me. Iโ€™ll figure it out myself.โ€

โ€œKeira, donโ€™t. You donโ€™t need to dig into this, and you definitely donโ€™t need to get involved in my mess anymore,โ€ she said, her voice tinged with guilt. โ€œYouโ€™ve already done enoughโ€”helping me pay off all that debt. Iโ€™m grateful, okay? Thatโ€™s enough.โ€

I studied her, my mind running wild with guesses about the โ€œsecretโ€ she was hiding.

โ€œIโ€™ll pay you back. Bit by bit,โ€ she said quietly, avoiding my gaze.

We both knew the truth. With the way she was earning now, it would take her a decadeโ€”probably longerโ€”to pay back the $500,000 Iโ€™d lent her.

โ€œYou donโ€™t have to worry about that,โ€ I said firmly. โ€œAll I care about is you being safe and okay.โ€

But Demi just shook her head. She was set on repaying me. I didnโ€™t argue. Everyone has their principles, and I wasnโ€™t about to trample on hers.

Since Demi refused to come back with me, I focused on making sure sheโ€™d be in a better place. I rented her a small studio apartment, paying the rent three years in advance. On top of that, I pulled some strings with Ron and got her a job at a local company. At least this way, she wouldnโ€™t have to grind herself into the ground just to survive.

Once everything was squared away, I called Lena to set up a meeting with her and Nate.

โ€œSure, Iโ€™ll let him know,โ€ Lena said. โ€œOnce we lock down a time and place, Iโ€™ll send it to you.โ€

She said it so casually, like she was inviting me and Nate out instead of the other way around. I didnโ€™t mind, though, and just went along with it.

But Lena didnโ€™t get back to me for a while. What I didnโ€™t realize was that she had something unexpected going on at her end.

Nateโ€™s sudden announcement about visiting Lenaโ€™s parents had her totally thrown.

โ€œYou want to meet my parents because of what happened with my uncle yesterday?โ€ she asked, trying to make sense of it.

โ€œNope,โ€ Nate said, pulling her closer. โ€œI planned this from the start. Weโ€™ve just gone official, sure, but Iโ€™ve been in love with you way before that.โ€

Lena knew he meant itโ€”she could feel itโ€”but still, this felt way too fast. โ€œDo you even get what meeting my parents means?โ€

He laced his fingers with hers and nodded, dead serious. โ€œOf course I do.โ€

Her breath caught. โ€œThink about it. When itโ€™s just us, itโ€™s us. But bringing my parents into it? Thatโ€™s a whole other level.โ€

Nate spun her to face him, his eyes locked on hers. โ€œLena, I want to marry you. Itโ€™s not just you I needโ€”itโ€™s their blessing too.โ€

Her chest tightened, warmth spilling through her. But still, she had to ask, โ€œAre you sure Iโ€™m the one you want to spend forever with?โ€

The question hung there, heavy and surreal, like stepping into a dream you werenโ€™t sure you were ready for.

โ€œYes,โ€ he said. โ€œFrom the first moment I saw you, I knew it was you.โ€ He leaned in, brushing his nose against hers, all soft and sweet.

How could she say no to that? This was Nate. Not just the guy she lovedโ€”he was her whole childhood, her biggest โ€œwhat if,โ€ turned real.

Marrying him wasnโ€™t just a new idea; it was the idea, the one sheโ€™d been dreaming about since the first time her heart skipped a beat for him.

โ€œAlright,โ€ she said. โ€œIโ€™ll let my parents know, so theyโ€™re ready for you.โ€

Lena texted me later, saying weโ€™d have to reschedule. Apparently, she and Nate were meeting her parentsโ€”definitely a big-deal kind of thing. I wasnโ€™t pressed. Waiting was no biggie.

By evening, Iโ€™d swapped my casuals for something sleek and headed to DracoLux, the Drago familyโ€™s infamous nightclub. The name screamed bougie drama, and yeah, DracoLux was basically the crown jewel of Seavora nightlife. Not just for rich folksโ€”for the rich folks. Like, โ€œI summer in Monacoโ€ vibes.
