Chapter 660

When Lena saw me, her eyes widened. โ€œDid you mug someone last night or something?โ€

Even with makeup, my dark circles were glaringly obvious. I didnโ€™t bother pretending. โ€œJust couldnโ€™t sleep.โ€

Lena didnโ€™t pry further, probably assuming it was about Hayden again.

โ€œWhereโ€™s Nate? Why isnโ€™t he here?โ€ I asked, steering the conversation. Iโ€™d invited Nate to discuss something about Yuna.

โ€œWhat, missing him already?โ€ Lena teased.

โ€œYep, been pining away for him forever,โ€ I shot back, grinning.

She poured me a glass of water and slid it across the table. โ€œHe got called in to check out some case for a friend. Said heโ€™d swing by after heโ€™s done.โ€

I sipped the water. โ€œSo, how did meeting his parents go? All smooth?โ€

โ€œSmooth enough. My parents love himโ€”already pushing us to tie the knot as soon as possible.โ€

Her tone was far from excited. Iโ€™d known her long enough to catch it instantly.

โ€œYou donโ€™t sound too thrilled about that.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not that Iโ€™m unhappy. Itโ€™s justโ€ฆ everything feels rushed, like we donโ€™t even know each other that well yet,โ€ Lena said, shaking her head slightly. โ€œAm I being too picky?โ€

โ€œKind of,โ€ I admitted, not sugarcoating it. โ€œYouโ€™ve liked him for so long.โ€

โ€œI have liked him,โ€ she said, sighing. โ€œBut weโ€™ve barely even dated, and now itโ€™s all about marriage. And with him living abroadโ€ฆโ€

She trailed off, her worry loud and clearโ€”she wasnโ€™t ready for a long-distance marriage. It was clear she felt stuck, unsure how to resolve the distance problem.

โ€œOne of you is going to have to sacrifice,โ€ I said bluntly. โ€œOtherwise, itโ€™s either long-distance or separate lives.โ€

Lena pouted but stayed quiet. Being together isnโ€™t just about love. Honestly, with my own life still a train wreck, I wasnโ€™t exactly equipped to play couples counselor. This was something Lena and Nate needed to figure out for themselves.

โ€œHave you been losing sleep a lot lately? If it keeps happening, donโ€™t ignore it. Come to the hospital tomorrow, and Iโ€™ll check you out,โ€ Lena said, steering the conversation back to me.

โ€œNo, itโ€™s just last night,โ€ I said, yawning mid-sentence. Drowsiness was creeping in, but I couldnโ€™t leave before Nate arrived.

โ€œWhy donโ€™t you head back?โ€ Lena suggested, her tone concerned. โ€œIf itโ€™s important, you can call him tomorrow.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m fine. Iโ€™ll wait,โ€ I insisted, waving a waiter over to order a double shot of coffee.

By the time Nate finally showed up, the caffeine had worked its magic, and I was wide awake.

โ€œSorry Iโ€™m late,โ€ Nate said, sliding into the seat.

โ€œReaโ€™s already caffeinated herself into alertness,โ€ Lena teased, though there was a hint of scolding in her voice.

Nate apologized again. I waved him off before signaling the waiter to bring out the food.

Over lunch, I brought up Yunaโ€™s health.

โ€œIโ€™ve looked through her checkup reports,โ€ Nate said. โ€œSheโ€™s doing great. If she avoids rejection for the next three years and stays this stable, she should be fine long-term.โ€

His words eased some of my worry, but then I thought about Yunaโ€™s heartโ€”Narelleโ€™s heart. And Wade. Yuna liked him, but Wade only cared about her because of that heart. The thought made my stomach twist. โ€œHas she been feeling sick or acting differently?โ€ Nate asked, catching the shift in my expression.

I avoided mentioning Wade and instead told him about Yunaโ€™s plans for college. Both Lena and Nate were very supportive, with Nate stressing that a normal routine would help Yuna adjust to her new life.

After the meal, they offered me a ride, but I turned them down. Nateโ€™s visits were rare, and I didnโ€™t want to cut into their time together. Or so it seemed.

Instead of heading home, I made my way to the bar where Tanya worked. I ordered a drink and settled into a seat, letting the music buzz around me.

It didnโ€™t take long for Tanya to notice me. I noticed her too, right away. I could feel the dissatisfaction radiating off her at the sight of me.
