Chapter 664

โ€œMale models? Whatโ€™s going on with you lately? First, youโ€™re trying to buy a bar, and now youโ€™re planning some kind of male model show?โ€ Ron sounded equally floored and suspicious after I pitched my idea.

โ€œIโ€™m just having fun. Canโ€™t you tell?โ€ I replied, laughing to brush it off.

But Ron wasnโ€™t buying it. He squinted at me, his detective mode fully activated.

Whatever. I rolled my eyes and launched into my pitch. โ€œOkay, so our companyโ€™s doing that light and music festival soon, right? Why not go big with a live human light show? Imagine male greeters or models wearing LED-lit outfitsโ€”total showstopper vibes.โ€

Ron raised a brow. โ€œA human light show? Thatโ€™sโ€ฆbold. Iโ€™ll give you points for creativity.โ€

I grinned. โ€œExactly! So, you think itโ€™ll work? Cool. Start building a team to make it happen.โ€

He gave me that โ€œare-you-kidding-meโ€ look. โ€œMs. Kay, you think this is, what, grabbing clothes off a store rack? This would need custom designs, production, and oh yeah, weโ€™re already on a time crunch.โ€

I gave him my best pretty-please face. โ€œI know, Ron. Thatโ€™s why I need you. Youโ€™re the genius who can pull it off.โ€

โ€œYour pretty face isnโ€™t gonna cut it,โ€ he shot back, shutting me down before throwing in a casual, soul-crushing zinger. โ€œUnless Hayden were hereโ€”maybe heโ€™d make it happen.โ€

Oof. That hit harder than I expected.

โ€œWell, Iโ€™ll figure it out myself,โ€ I said, stubborn as ever, my competitive streak kicking in. Before Ron could get another word in, I spun on my heel and stormed off.

โ€œHey! Wait!โ€ he called after me, but yeah, no chance. I was done.

Anyone watching could tell I was fuming. Apparently, Ron caught on, too, because the next thing I knew, he was jogging to catch up.

โ€œAlright, alright,โ€ he said, his tone way softer now. โ€œIโ€™m sorry. I shouldnโ€™t have brought Hayden into it, okay? Weโ€™ll go with your human light show idea. If anyoneโ€™s got a problem, Iโ€™ll deal with it.โ€

Since he actually apologizedโ€”and, like, meant itโ€”I decided to let it go. โ€œThanks,โ€ I muttered.

Back at my desk, I tried diving into work, but my eyelids had other plans. It was giving serious textbook syndromeโ€”youโ€™re fine until the second you try to focus, and bam, instant nap mode.

Two sleepless nights had officially caught up with me, and honestly, I wasnโ€™t about to fight it. I ditched my desk, kicked off my shoes, and crashed on the office couch.

No clue how long I was out when I got jolted awake.

โ€œMs. Kay, wake up. I need your help with something,โ€ Ronโ€™s voice cut through the fog in my brain.

I blinked, heart pounding from the suddenness, still feeling half-dead. Without moving, I mumbled, โ€œWhat now?โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s someone flying in for our new project. Big deal. Their flight lands at 4:30. Youโ€™ve gotta get to the airport,โ€ Ron said, checking his watch.

I stayed flat on the couch, feeling like sleep had actually drained me instead of recharging. Even my voice sounded limp. โ€œWhy donโ€™t you go?โ€

Pretty sure I set a record for employee sass just then.

โ€œMy girlfriend got hurt,โ€ Ron said, guilt all over his face. โ€œShe just called, and I need to check on her.โ€

He stepped forward like he was going to drag me up, but I didnโ€™t move. Instead, I groaned, โ€œFine. Iโ€™ll go.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll send you their info and a photo. Look it over on the way,โ€ he said, already backing toward the door.

โ€œOkay,โ€ I muttered.

โ€œDonโ€™t just โ€˜okayโ€™ me, and donโ€™t fall asleep again. You donโ€™t have time,โ€ he warned, half-panicked.

โ€œGot it, go!โ€ I waved him off like shooing a fly.

โ€œThis partner is really important,โ€ Ron added before finally leaving.

Once he was gone, I closed my eyes for just a second, trying to quiet the nerves buzzing in my chest. I didnโ€™t fall back asleepโ€”I just needed a second to shake off the weird pit in my stomach.

It wasnโ€™t the usual post-nap haze either. This wasโ€ฆdifferent. Like my chest felt empty, and my heartbeat was all wrong.

Okay, maybe chill out? Still, with all the stories about random heart issues these days, I made a mental note to ask Nate for a quick checkup later. Better safe than, wellโ€ฆyou know.
