Chapter 668

I glanced up, spotting an elderly couple shuffling in, hand in hand, their faces tight with worry. The desk officer was about to stand when I beat him to it. โ€œMr. Yule, Mrs. Yule.โ€

They turned toward me, startled. Mrs. Yuleโ€™s face lit up, a brief flicker of joy breaking through the tension. โ€œNarelleโ€ฆโ€ she started.

โ€œSheโ€™s not Narelle,โ€ Mr. Yule cut in gently, pulling her back. His tone was steady, but the heartbreak in his eyes was unmistakable. Mrs. Yuleโ€™s joy shattered instantly, replaced by a deep sadness that made my chest ache. I stepped closer, trying to ground them. โ€œMr. Yule, Mrs. Yule, whatโ€™s going on? Are you here to file a report?โ€

I had stolen the officerโ€™s line, but he stepped in professionally anyway. โ€œIf youโ€™re here to report something, please follow me.โ€

But they didnโ€™t move. Instead, Mr. Yule started explaining, โ€œFor the past few days, someoneโ€™s been banging on our door, yelling that if we donโ€™t behave, theyโ€™ll hurt us badly.โ€

The words hit like a slap, and I stole a glance at the officer, who was already frowning. โ€œDo you recognize the person? Any conflicts or grudges?โ€ he asked.

Both shook their heads. Mr. Yule let out a heavy sigh. โ€œWeโ€™ve never seen them before.โ€

โ€œHow long has this been happening?โ€ the officer pressed.

โ€œThree, maybe four days,โ€ Mr. Yule answered, glancing at his wife for confirmation. She nodded quickly, her voice trembling as she pleaded, โ€œOfficer, please, you have to help us.โ€

The officerโ€™s tone softened. โ€œWe will. But I need you to give me as much detail as you can.โ€ He gestured toward a nearby room. โ€œCome with me.โ€

Mr. Yule hesitated, looking back at me like he wanted to say something. His lips moved, but no words came out. For some reason, the look in his eyes tugged at something in me. โ€œGo on with the officer. Iโ€™ll finish up here and come find you soon,โ€ I said, trying to sound reassuring.

โ€œAlright, alright,โ€ he replied quickly, his voice softening, though it was clear he wanted me there. The officer led them to another room, handing off their case to a colleague. I hurried to wrap up my paperwork, then made my way to the Yulesโ€™ meeting room.

By the time I arrived, theyโ€™d finished telling their story, repeating over and over that they had no idea who was threatening them.

โ€œDid this person say anything specific?โ€ the officer asked. โ€œWere they asking for money or something else?โ€

Mr. Yule nodded, his expression dark. โ€œThey demanded money. They said, โ€˜You canโ€™t spend it anyway. When you die, itโ€™ll just go to someone else, so why not give it to me?โ€™โ€

The moment I heard that, it clickedโ€”this wasnโ€™t random. Whoever was behind this knew them well. Too well.

โ€œHave you shown any signs of wealth recently?โ€ the officer pressed.

Mr. Yule shook his head. โ€œAfter our daughterโ€™s accident, we cut ties with everyoneโ€”friends, family. Weโ€™ve barely left the house.โ€

โ€œWhat about any unusual interactions? Strangers, workers, anyone new?โ€ The officerโ€™s questions came steadily, methodical.

Eventually, he asked about their home security. They admitted their surveillance system had been broken for a month.

A busted camera system and days of harassment? This wasnโ€™t just bad luck. It was calculated.

โ€œWeโ€™ve got everything youโ€™ve reported,โ€ the officer said. โ€œWeโ€™ll assign someone to monitor your home. If this person shows up again, weโ€™ll catch them. For now, go about your daily routine as normally as possible.โ€

The Yules were escorted out, but their fear clung to them like shadows. I followed after, unable to leave it at that.

โ€œLet me take you home,โ€ I offered.
