Chapter 682
I muttered a half-hearted reply and headed for the meeting room without bothering to ask who was waiting.
โWait up,โ Ron called after me. โThat model from yesterdayโheโs seriously not Hayden.โ
โI know,โ I said, biting the edge of my coffee cup. โI buried him myself.โ
Ron just nodded and let me go. Thatโs when I saw who was waiting inside. Jace. His eyes fixed on me like he was trying to read my mind.
Too bad for him, I was in a great mood today. For the first time in weeks, Iโd actually put on makeup. Heck, Iโd even looked in the mirror before leaving and thought, โDang, I look good.โ Even the pain in my injured leg decided to chill out. Walking didnโt hurt for once.
โYouโre late,โ Jace broke the silence as he checked me out, his tone super casual.
โYeah, but my boss is cool. No pay docking here,โ I shot back. His face froze for a second. Back at Riverwave Corp, being late meant fines, CEOโs fiancรฉe or not.
โI called yesterday, but you didnโt answer. I even swung by your place, but the lights were off. I was worried,โ he said, his voice all concerned.
โI just went home and crashed,โ I replied, keeping it dry.
Jaceโs lips twitched. โI thought youโd be losing sleep.โ
โWhat for? Xander?โ I asked bluntly. We both knew thatโs why he was here.
โHeโs not Hayden,โ Jace said, pulling out his phone. A second later, mine buzzed in my pocket. โI had him looked into overnight. Itโs all there.โ He paused briefly, then added, โHaydenโs gone, Rea. You saw it happen.โ
My grip tightened on the coffee cup. โI know Haydenโs gone. Iโm not mistaking Xander for him.โ
Jace relaxed a littleโuntil I added, โXander is Xander.โ
His eyes narrowed. โWhatโs that supposed to mean?โ
I sipped my coffee, leaving him hanging.
The vein in his temple popped. โRea, stop. Haydenโs gone. You loved him, not just his face.โ
โI mean, his face definitely didnโt hurt,โ I said with a small laugh.
Jace looked stunned, like Iโd slapped him.
โEver heard of โthings trigger memories of peopleโ?โ I asked. โNow imagine someone who looks exactly like him showing up in front of me. What do you think that feels like?โ
โSo what? Youโre going to treat Xander like heโs Hayden? Use him as a stand-in to fill some void?โ Guess he was angry, because his voice shook.
โStand-in?โ I shook my head. โIโm not that heartless.โ
โThen what are you saying?โ Jace snapped, completely losing his cool.
I set my coffee down. โWhatever I mean, itโs not your business anymore, is it?โ
His face was dark with frustration. โReaโฆโ
โJace, we agreed a long time ago to stay out of each otherโs lives. You donโt get to stand here and question me.โ My voice came out colder than Iโd expected.
Yesterday, I told Lena to stop messing with Jace. Funny thing was, I couldnโt even fully let go myself.
His face drained of color, and he dropped his gaze. โI know I donโt have the right anymore. I justโฆ I donโt want to watch you spiral into the same pain again.โ
For a second, he hesitated, then reached for my hand. His throat bobbed as he struggled to find the words. โI messed up. You gave me exactly what I deservedโprobably worse. But nowโฆโ He exhaled shakily. โIโm asking you for one more chance. Pretend Iโm someone new. Someone youโre just meeting for the first time.โ
His meaning was crystal clear. He wanted a do-over.
