Chapter 682

I muttered a half-hearted reply and headed for the meeting room without bothering to ask who was waiting.

โ€œWait up,โ€ Ron called after me. โ€œThat model from yesterdayโ€”heโ€™s seriously not Hayden.โ€

โ€œI know,โ€ I said, biting the edge of my coffee cup. โ€œI buried him myself.โ€

Ron just nodded and let me go. Thatโ€™s when I saw who was waiting inside. Jace. His eyes fixed on me like he was trying to read my mind.

Too bad for him, I was in a great mood today. For the first time in weeks, Iโ€™d actually put on makeup. Heck, Iโ€™d even looked in the mirror before leaving and thought, โ€˜Dang, I look good.โ€™ Even the pain in my injured leg decided to chill out. Walking didnโ€™t hurt for once.

โ€œYouโ€™re late,โ€ Jace broke the silence as he checked me out, his tone super casual.

โ€œYeah, but my boss is cool. No pay docking here,โ€ I shot back. His face froze for a second. Back at Riverwave Corp, being late meant fines, CEOโ€™s fiancรฉe or not.

โ€œI called yesterday, but you didnโ€™t answer. I even swung by your place, but the lights were off. I was worried,โ€ he said, his voice all concerned.

โ€œI just went home and crashed,โ€ I replied, keeping it dry.

Jaceโ€™s lips twitched. โ€œI thought youโ€™d be losing sleep.โ€

โ€œWhat for? Xander?โ€ I asked bluntly. We both knew thatโ€™s why he was here.

โ€œHeโ€™s not Hayden,โ€ Jace said, pulling out his phone. A second later, mine buzzed in my pocket. โ€œI had him looked into overnight. Itโ€™s all there.โ€ He paused briefly, then added, โ€œHaydenโ€™s gone, Rea. You saw it happen.โ€

My grip tightened on the coffee cup. โ€œI know Haydenโ€™s gone. Iโ€™m not mistaking Xander for him.โ€

Jace relaxed a littleโ€”until I added, โ€œXander is Xander.โ€

His eyes narrowed. โ€œWhatโ€™s that supposed to mean?โ€

I sipped my coffee, leaving him hanging.

The vein in his temple popped. โ€œRea, stop. Haydenโ€™s gone. You loved him, not just his face.โ€

โ€œI mean, his face definitely didnโ€™t hurt,โ€ I said with a small laugh.

Jace looked stunned, like Iโ€™d slapped him.

โ€œEver heard of โ€˜things trigger memories of peopleโ€™?โ€ I asked. โ€œNow imagine someone who looks exactly like him showing up in front of me. What do you think that feels like?โ€

โ€œSo what? Youโ€™re going to treat Xander like heโ€™s Hayden? Use him as a stand-in to fill some void?โ€ Guess he was angry, because his voice shook.

โ€œStand-in?โ€ I shook my head. โ€œIโ€™m not that heartless.โ€

โ€œThen what are you saying?โ€ Jace snapped, completely losing his cool.

I set my coffee down. โ€œWhatever I mean, itโ€™s not your business anymore, is it?โ€

His face was dark with frustration. โ€œReaโ€ฆโ€

โ€œJace, we agreed a long time ago to stay out of each otherโ€™s lives. You donโ€™t get to stand here and question me.โ€ My voice came out colder than Iโ€™d expected.

Yesterday, I told Lena to stop messing with Jace. Funny thing was, I couldnโ€™t even fully let go myself.

His face drained of color, and he dropped his gaze. โ€œI know I donโ€™t have the right anymore. I justโ€ฆ I donโ€™t want to watch you spiral into the same pain again.โ€

For a second, he hesitated, then reached for my hand. His throat bobbed as he struggled to find the words. โ€œI messed up. You gave me exactly what I deservedโ€”probably worse. But nowโ€ฆโ€ He exhaled shakily. โ€œIโ€™m asking you for one more chance. Pretend Iโ€™m someone new. Someone youโ€™re just meeting for the first time.โ€

His meaning was crystal clear. He wanted a do-over.
