Chapter 684

First thing I did? Check Xander over. No blood, no cuts, but his face was paleโ€”scared pale. Hayden wouldnโ€™t have looked like that, I thought before I could stop myself. Yeah, just one more reminder Xander wasnโ€™t him.

Still, that didnโ€™t mean I could just leave him there. I stepped through the mess, crunching glass under my high heels, and stopped at his side. โ€œWhat happened?โ€

Xander didnโ€™t answer, just stared at me. Disgust flickered in his eyes.

Before I could say anything else, one of the big guys barked, โ€œWho the hell are you?โ€

Another guy yanked him back, whispering, โ€œSheโ€™s with the Johnston family.โ€

The first guy squinted at me like I was under a microscope, then sneered. โ€œDidnโ€™t Jace Johnston already ditch her?โ€

God, how gross. And yet, Jace had the gall to think we could start over? If I did go back, this ridicule would never stop.

โ€œKeira Kay,โ€ I said, my voice sharp. โ€œAnd heโ€™s with me. Whatever he did, Iโ€™ll handle it.โ€

โ€œHandle it? Who even are you?โ€ the same guy snorted, his tone dripping with disrespect. He was clearly the loudmouth of the group, acting like his opinion was the only one that mattered. It was painfully obvious he was trying to make things harder for me on purpose. Just responding felt like giving him more credit than he deserved.

I grabbed Xanderโ€™s arm and tugged. โ€œWeโ€™re leaving.โ€

He didnโ€™t budge at first, but after a second pull, he followed. Almost.

Before we got far, the jerk spat out one more insult: โ€œUnbelievable. People like you think you run the place.โ€

The insults didnโ€™t stop there, each one slimier than the last. Yeah, leaving peacefully clearly wasnโ€™t an option.

I let go of Xanderโ€™s arm, spun around, and grabbed a glass ashtray off the table. Without hesitation, I chucked it. The dull crack as it hit his face was oddly satisfying. Blood immediately smeared across his nose and cheeks.

The room froze. Jaws dropped. Then the yelling started. โ€œGet security!โ€

The door burst open, and for a second, I thought reinforcements had arrived for Team Jerk. But noโ€”one of them stormed in and asked me, โ€œMs. Kay, are you alright?โ€

Just like that, the jerk squad went dead quiet.

Relieved, I exhaled but kept my cool. I pointed at that jerk and said, dripping with disdain, โ€œTrash like this shouldnโ€™t even be allowed in here. Itโ€™s polluting the air.โ€

One of the guards nodded. โ€œDonโ€™t worry, Ms. Kay. Weโ€™ll handle it.โ€

As the bodyguards moved to deal with the troublemakers, I grabbed Xander and walked out.

Once we were clear, I steadied my breath and turned to him. โ€œAre you hurt?โ€

He didnโ€™t respond, just fixed me with a cold, almost accusing look.

I laughed. โ€œWhatโ€™s with the face? I just saved you. A โ€˜thank youโ€™ wouldnโ€™t kill you.โ€

โ€œYou think pulling a stunt like that makes me grateful? Like Iโ€™ll just turn into your personal puppet?โ€ His words sliced through the moment, sharper than I expected.

Ah. That explained the ice earlier. He thought this whole thing was my grand scheme.

โ€œWow,โ€ I let out a dry laugh. โ€œYour imaginationโ€™s impressive, but letโ€™s get one thing straightโ€”youโ€™re not worth that much effort.โ€

I lifted my hand. My fingers brushed his cheek, and thatโ€™s when I noticed the streak of red. My blood, dripping from tiny cuts I hadnโ€™t even realized I had.

Still, I didnโ€™t pull away. Xander didnโ€™t flinch either, just stared as my bloodied fingers trailed his skin.

โ€œXander Zane,โ€ I said, โ€œyour face reminds me of someone I loved. But youโ€™re not him. And youโ€™re not worth me going to such lengths.โ€

Then I dropped my hand and walked away. His doubt annoyed me, sure. But the truth? I couldnโ€™t blame him. My timing was way too perfect. Even I wouldโ€™ve been suspicious.
