Chapter 687

A sharp sting snapped me back. โ€œOw!โ€ I flinched, trying to pull my hand away, but Xanderโ€™s grip didnโ€™t budge. โ€œStay still,โ€ he said, his voice low, calmโ€”soft, even. โ€œItโ€™ll be over in a second.โ€

This guy. His mood swings were wilder than a summer storm, and I was no closer to figuring him out. The nurse worked quickly, skilled and efficient. In no time, she pulled out a glass shard and held it up like a trophy. โ€œSee? Itโ€™s pretty big. If you hadnโ€™t gotten this out, it wouldโ€™ve just kept hurting, stuck like that.โ€

I stared at the shard, trying to remember when I couldโ€™ve gotten it. It mustโ€™ve been when I smashed that ashtray earlier.

The nurse disinfected my wound and wrapped it with a bandage. Just like that, I was done. Good to go.

โ€œThank you,โ€ Xander said to the nurse and finally released my hand. I pulled it back awkwardly, staring at the bandage for a beat before looking at him. โ€œWhat about you?โ€

โ€œWhat about me?โ€ Xander blinked, then caught on. โ€œIโ€™m fine. Not a scratch.โ€

Okay, that didnโ€™t add up. Considering heโ€™d just played superhero, dodging a car and rolling us across the ground, he shouldโ€™ve at least had, like, dirt on him or something. Guess his soft-boy vibes were just for show.

As we stepped out of the treatment room, I gave him a side-eye. โ€œAlright, spill. Whatโ€™s your deal? Payback? Revenge?โ€

I couldnโ€™t ignore how much his attitude toward me had flipped. It was sus.

โ€œHm?โ€ He tilted his head, feigning ignorance. โ€œDonโ€™t you, like, hate me? So whatโ€™s with this whole โ€˜saving my lifeโ€™ thing?โ€ I waved my bandaged hand for dramatic effect.

โ€œYou got hurt because of me,โ€ he said, like it was the most obvious thing in the world. โ€œBringing you to a doctor seemedโ€ฆ fair.โ€

โ€œFine, great. My handโ€™s fixed, dramaโ€™s over. Weโ€™re square,โ€ I said, swiping at him like a cat batting at string. Out of nowhere, he hit me with, โ€œDo I really look that much like the person youโ€™re in love with?โ€

I froze, my eyes flicking to his face. โ€œAt first? Yeah. But now?โ€ I shrugged. โ€œNot so much.โ€

โ€œYou helped me earlier because of this face, didnโ€™t you?โ€ He wasnโ€™t wrong.

I nodded. โ€œYup. This face means a lot to me. If something happened to it, Iโ€™d loseโ€ฆ a piece of him.โ€

He didnโ€™t say anything, so I smiled faintly. โ€œBut I know youโ€™re not him.โ€

I turned to leave, but as we brushed past each other, he threw me off again. โ€œDoes your offer to โ€˜keep meโ€™ still stand?โ€

I stopped dead in my tracks and spun around. โ€œWaitโ€”now youโ€™re saying yes?โ€

He flushed slightly. โ€œBetween managing a bunch of clients or justโ€ฆ entertaining you, Iโ€™d rather stick with one person. Specifically you.โ€

I let out a soft laugh. โ€œSo now you want to be my kept man?โ€

His face was all business. โ€œDo you still feel the same way as before?โ€

The nerve of him. When I was dead serious about it, he shot me down without a second thought. Now that Iโ€™ve moved on? Suddenly, heโ€™s interested. Typical.

I smirked. โ€œAnd if I said no? Would you be disappointed?โ€

โ€œI would.โ€ His gaze locked onto mine. โ€œI hope youโ€™ll reconsider.โ€

Reconsider? Yeah, no. Nobody tells me how to feel.

I raised an eyebrow. โ€œLook, what I said back then was just impulsive. I was grieving, okay? It wasnโ€™t about youโ€”it was about your face. But now? Youโ€™re not him. So whatโ€™s the point of โ€˜keepingโ€™ you? To stare at you all day?โ€

โ€œI can cook for you. Iโ€™m a great cook,โ€ he replied, dead serious.

That hit harder than it shouldโ€™ve. For a second, I thought about Hayden. His cooking. The way I hadnโ€™t eaten a real meal at home sinceโ€ฆ since he wasnโ€™t there anymore. Xander had no idea the nerve he just struck.

โ€œReally?โ€ I said. โ€œShow me your hands.โ€

He stretched out his hands. His fingers were clean, smoothโ€”zero calluses. I couldnโ€™t hold back a laugh. โ€œWith hands like those, you expect me to believe youโ€™re some kind of kitchen god?โ€

โ€œWhy donโ€™t you give me a shot and find out?โ€ Xander said, his tone light but with just enough persuasion to make me raise an eyebrow.

I decided to play along. โ€œFine. If you can cook something I actually like, Iโ€™ll โ€˜keepโ€™ youโ€”for the food, of course.โ€ โ€œCan we start now?โ€ He sounded way too eager.

I nodded, stepping closer to him. โ€œYour place or mine?โ€
