Chapter 689

โ€œCome and eat,โ€ Xander called.

I didnโ€™t move, just watched him as he set the table. โ€œCome on, give it a taste,โ€ he coaxed.

Under the soft dining room light, he looked so much like Hayden. The way he moved, the way he stirred the soup earlierโ€”everything about it was familiar. You can fake a lot of things, but those tiny habits? The stuff you donโ€™t even realize youโ€™re doing? Thatโ€™s harder to fake.

Soโ€ฆ Xander had to be Hayden, right?

That thought pulled me to my feet. I walked over and stopped behind him. Before I even knew what I was doing, I wrapped my arms around him, resting my face against his back.

His body tensed, but he didnโ€™t pull away. Instead, he said softly, โ€œThe foodโ€™s ready.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re Hayden, arenโ€™t you?โ€ I whispered.

Xander didnโ€™t say a word.

I moved around to face him, gently grabbing his shoulders to turn him toward me. โ€œThereโ€™s no one else here, just us. You can tell me the truth. Pleaseโ€ฆ tell me youโ€™re Hayden. Okay?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not,โ€ he said, his voice cutting through the fragile hope Iโ€™d been holding onto.

โ€œIโ€™m Xander,โ€ he repeated.

I let go of his hand. โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ I murmured. โ€œItโ€™s justโ€ฆ when youโ€™re wearing that apron and cooking like that, youโ€™re exactly like Hayden. Even the way you stir soup with your left hand, three times, is just like him.โ€

His jaw tightened. โ€œThatโ€™s just a coincidence.โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ I said with a bitter smile. โ€œA coincidence. Such a perfect coincidence it keeps making me think youโ€™re him.โ€

I sank into the dining chair, stabbed a piece of roasted zucchini with my fork, and took a bite. The second it hit my tongue, my brow furrowed.

Xander caught it immediately. โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong? Is it bad? Too salty? Too bland?โ€

I didnโ€™t answer right away. The issue wasnโ€™t the flavor. The zucchini didnโ€™t taste like Haydenโ€™s cooking.

So, he wasnโ€™t Hayden.

This man kept dragging me to the edge of hope and doubt, over and over, until my emotions were rubbed raw. โ€œHm?โ€ Xander prompted again, still waiting patiently.

I put down the fork and lied. โ€œItโ€™s not good.โ€

He didnโ€™t seem phased. โ€œIโ€™ll make it again,โ€ he said, already halfway to the kitchen.

โ€œDonโ€™t bother,โ€ I called after him.

โ€œItโ€™s no trouble. I can whip up something else,โ€ he insisted, like he had to prove himselfโ€”like being dismissed wasnโ€™t an option.

โ€œI know you can,โ€ I said. โ€œBut save it for another night. Itโ€™s late.โ€

That stopped him, and for some reason, my words made his eyes brighten.

โ€œSo, youโ€™re saying Iโ€™ll get another chance to cook for you?โ€

For a moment, I just stared at him, wondering if he really wanted to stay in my life. Then I gave a small nod. โ€œIโ€™ll have the cream soup.โ€

If nothing else, the way he stirred itโ€”three times, with his left handโ€”was exactly like Hayden. Maybe it would taste like him, too.

And it did. The soup was rich, and almost perfect. Close enough to Haydenโ€™s.

โ€œYou should eat too,โ€ I said, gesturing to the spread. โ€œI canโ€™t finish all this on my own, and itโ€™d be a waste.โ€

He sat down across from me. We ate in silence.

Neither of us said a word until the meal was almost done. Thatโ€™s when the promise Iโ€™d made to Yuna popped back into my head.

โ€œWould you be willing to play Hayden for me?โ€ I asked, breaking the quiet.

Xanderโ€™s hand halted mid-motion. His eyes flicked to mine, a mix of curiosity and hesitation written all over his face.

โ€œDonโ€™t get the wrong idea,โ€ I said quickly. โ€œItโ€™s not anything weird. I just need you to help me act out a scene.โ€ That seemed to relax him, and he went back to eating. โ€œThereโ€™ll be an extra charge for that.โ€

โ€œFine. But if you mess it up, Iโ€™m not paying, and thereโ€™ll be a penalty.โ€

Xander was clearly unbothered. โ€œFair enough. Just so weโ€™re clear, thoughโ€”this scene doesnโ€™t involve anything romantic or intimate.โ€

That did itโ€”I lost it. Mid-sip of my cream soup, I burst out laughing, accidentally spraying some onto his shirt. Xander didnโ€™t even flinch. He just grabbed a napkin, calm as ever, and wiped himself off. โ€œIf you wanted me to stay the night,โ€ he said smoothly, โ€œyou couldโ€™ve just asked. No need for tricks like this.โ€
