Chapter 694

โ€œDo you remember who it was?โ€ Ron pressed again.

โ€œI think you need to focus on healing and getting back to work,โ€ I said lightly, dodging. โ€œYour daily check-ins are the highlight of my day.โ€ Then I hung up with a laugh.

Wayne stepped inside as I set my phone down, placing the bouquet on my desk. He studied me for a moment. โ€œItโ€™s been a long time since Iโ€™ve seen you smile like that.โ€

โ€œIt was our boss,โ€ I said, using Ron as my cover story. โ€œHe got scratched up by his girlfriend and was complaining to me about it.โ€

โ€œLet me guessโ€”he went to a club,โ€ Wayne said casually. โ€œI saw him there.โ€

My pulse stuttered. He saw Ron? And Ron mentioned seeing someone who looked like Derni. If Ron wasnโ€™t mistaken, thenโ€ฆ did Wayne see Demi too? And if she really was in Seavora, what about the person she was so terrified of? Iโ€™d always had my suspicions. That person might just be Wayne.

โ€œIs that so? Seems like all you men have a thing for places like that,โ€ I teased, watching for a reaction.

Wayneโ€™s expression stayed calm, almost amused. โ€œI was there for business.โ€

โ€œSure. Mr. Shane said the same thing, but his girlfriend wasnโ€™t buying it. Made a whole scene,โ€ I said, lifting the bouquet heโ€™d brought and taking a sniff. The sweetness was cloying, almost too much.

Wayneโ€™s tone shifted. โ€œI heard you had some trouble at DracoLux. Why didnโ€™t you call me?โ€

A chill crept up my spine. The nerve of himโ€”to sit here acting worried when I knew he was the one pulling the strings. If Xander hadnโ€™t shared that recording, I mightโ€™ve fallen for it. Wayneโ€™s earnest expression was unsettlingly convincing.

But fine. Two could play at this. It wasnโ€™t the right moment to call him out, so I decided to keep up the charade. โ€œItโ€™s fine. I handled it myself, so I didnโ€™t want to bother you.โ€

I gave him a faint smile. โ€œSmashed the guyโ€™s head. Blood everywhere.โ€

Wayneโ€™s brows furrowed. โ€œNext time, call me. Donโ€™t take risks like that. People like that are dangerous. What if youโ€™d gotten hurt?โ€

โ€œIf I had gotten hurt, youโ€™d make him pay with half his life, wouldnโ€™t you?โ€ I asked, my smile sharp.

โ€œBy then, even his life wouldnโ€™t be enough,โ€ Wayne said, his voice softening as his gaze rested on me. โ€œRea, nothing is more important than your safety.โ€

The fake concern in his words, the way he could feign such depth after orchestrating the whole thingโ€”it made my stomach churn. The nausea hit so fast I barely had time to think. I clamped a hand over my mouth and bolted for the restroom.

Behind me, I heard the scrape of Wayneโ€™s chair as he got up, but then he stopped.

In the restroom, I gripped the sink, staring at my reflection in the mirror as I tried to steady my breathing. For the first time, it hit meโ€”truly hating someone could actually make you sick.

But if I wanted to uncover Wayneโ€™s ties to the Drago familyโ€™s dirty dealings, I had to suck it up. No matter how sick it made me feel, I couldnโ€™t let it show.

Chapter 494

Ronโ€™s words replayed in my headโ€”heโ€™d said he saw someone who looked like Demi at DracoLux. Was he wrong? Or had Demi really come back?

I pulled out my phone, thinking about calling her, but Wayneโ€™s voice outside the restroom stopped me cold. โ€œRea, are you okay?โ€

Of course, heโ€™d followed me. With a sigh, I tucked my phone away, turned on the faucet, and let the water run for a moment before stepping out.

Wayneโ€™s eyes immediately searched mine as he reached out a hand to steady me. โ€œIf youโ€™re feeling unwell, you should see a doctor.โ€

I shook my head. โ€œItโ€™s nothing. Probably just a chill from crashing on the couch last night.โ€

โ€œEven so, donโ€™t brush it off,โ€ he pressed. โ€œYou should still get checked out.โ€

I looked up at him and smirked. โ€œWhat, are you thinking Iโ€™m pregnaโ€”โ€

Hayden had once freaked out over the same thing. Men. Always jumping to conclusions.

Wayneโ€™s expression faltered, but he recovered quickly. โ€œRea, Iโ€™m just worried about you.โ€
