Chapter 698

Xander let out a couple of startled coughs on the other end, clearly caught off guard by my overly sweet tone. โ€œWhat kind of favor?โ€ he asked, trying to sound composed.

โ€œDracoLux doesnโ€™t just have male models; they must have female ones too, right? Are you close to any of them?โ€ I asked bluntly. Now that I was sure he was Hayden, I didnโ€™t see the point in holding back.

Honestly, it was almost laughable. After all my sneaky efforts to figure out if he was Hayden, a simple plate of meatballs had been the thing to out him.

โ€œWhat are you planning to do?โ€ he asked, still keeping up his act.

I couldnโ€™t tell if the meatballs were his way of dropping a hint, but since he was so committed to the undercover bit, I decided to roll with it. โ€œOh, nothing big. I just want to try something newโ€”see what itโ€™s like to be a female model there.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ His voice cracked, loaded with disbelief.

โ€œI want to be a female model in DracoLux,โ€ I repeated, biting back a laugh. โ€œI figured you could help me get in.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not happening,โ€ he said immediately.

Feigning innocence, I asked, โ€œWhy not? What, am I not pretty enough? Is my figure not good enough?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s neither of those,โ€ he said, his tone suddenly seriousโ€”so Hayden. โ€œItโ€™s just not a place for you.โ€

โ€œWhy not? Youโ€™re working there, arenโ€™t you?โ€ I shot back on purpose.

The line went quiet for a few seconds before he finally said, โ€œI wonโ€™t let you go there. And I wonโ€™t refer you.โ€

Now thatโ€™s the Hayden I know.

But since he still wasnโ€™t admitting it outright, I decided to keep up the act. As far as I was concerned, he was Xanderโ€”the perfect target for a little teasing.

โ€œFine, then. Iโ€™ll figure it out myself,โ€ I said, acting like I was about to hang up. Before I could, though, he cut in.

โ€œWhat do you want to do? Just say it, and Iโ€™ll help you,โ€ he said, clearly catching on to my intentions.

I tapped my nails on the desk, keeping my voice playful. โ€œI really do just want to experience the life of a โ€˜female modelโ€™ in a nightclub.โ€

He didnโ€™t answer right away, so I threw in a dramatic sigh. โ€œWhy is it that men can โ€˜experienceโ€™ whatever they want, but we women canโ€™t?โ€

His tone dropped, serious and angry. โ€œDo you even know what the female models at DracoLux actually do? Do you understand how hard it is to get out once youโ€™re in?โ€

His words hit like a bucket of ice water. My chest tightened as his anger sank in. Demi hadnโ€™t been lyingโ€”Cole had. DracoLux wasnโ€™t some harmless โ€œentertainment onlyโ€ spot like heโ€™d tried to sell me.

I thought about Haydenโ€”no, Xanderโ€”spending months at that place. Before I could stop myself, I blurted, โ€œAnd you? How many women have youโ€ฆ slept with?โ€

The silence that followed was suffocating. My thoughts started spiraling. โ€œWhy arenโ€™t you answering? Is it because there were none? Or because youโ€™ve lost count?โ€

โ€œNone,โ€ he said.

I let out a small sigh of relief, but it didnโ€™t last long. A place like DracoLux wasnโ€™t somewhere you could just refuse clients without consequences. If Hayden had managed to stay clean, I couldnโ€™t even imagine the price heโ€™d paid to do it.

Still, knowing Hayden the way I did, I couldnโ€™t imagine him touching another woman so casually. If he had, how could he face me now?

Loyaltyโ€”especially when it came to the bodyโ€”wasnโ€™t something anyone could just brush off, no matter who they were.

But this wasnโ€™t the time to press him on it, so I let it slide and threw his words back at him instead. โ€œIf you can stay clean in a place like that, then so can I.โ€

He exhaled heavily on the other end. โ€œYouโ€™re really set on this?โ€

โ€œOf course,โ€ I said, leaning into my stubborn tone. โ€œI want to see what DracoLux is really likeโ€”with you.โ€

โ€œYou wonโ€™t get in,โ€ Xander replied, his voice dropping. โ€œNot while Cole and Wayne are keeping you under their protection. Youโ€™re their golden girl.โ€

The bitterness in his tone didnโ€™t go unnoticed. I laughed lightly. โ€œExactly. Which means even if I do get in, no one would dare book me, right?โ€

โ€œAnd do you really think theyโ€™d even let you in?โ€

He was right, of course. I wasnโ€™t actually planning to go. Like heโ€™d said, once you were in, it wasnโ€™t easy to leave. I wasnโ€™t about to gamble with my safety.

But teasing him? Oh, I could do that all day.
